I feel your pain - I really do. Unfortunately it's something that's going to take a while to heal, so substitutions may indeed be necessary.

Thanks, These are some great Ideas. The main pain comes from lowering the weight. Its also odd that I feel the pain when doing squats? I am assuming that the bar is hitting a nerve that causes the pain.

I thought the 10 days off would have fixed it some, but I must be more messed up then thought. It not like I can't lift, but I am afraid of doing more damage. So your probably right. Specially with no insurance right now I don't want to do something even more stupid then I probably already do.

Marathon Training
Easy Run

3 miles in 28:19
avg Hr 144 Max Hr 166

Mile 1 - 9:40
Mile 2 - 9:23
Mile 3 - 9:05

Another perfect morning. 64 out and hardly any humidity. I was pretty sore and tired when I woke up from yesterdays workout. One the shoes were laced, I was feeling better. Its funny that now that I am in Marathon mode the running is feeling more enjoyable then the weights. Where as when I was doing the Strength workouts the running was much more of a job. I will have to get my last Hyp 3 workout of the week done tonight as I have a industry show to go to tomorrow all day. I am fine with that, I hope I can talk my crew to head to one of the good Indian places downtown!!

Probably because running doesn't flare up your shoulder. Indian food sounds good - I might make some sometime soon.

Though my shoulder is much better than it was, it's still not right. I'm making a return visit to my doctor to get a referral to an orthopedic doctor (hopefully a sports-minded one). I also know about a sports chiropractor who doesn't charge an arm and a leg or demand a zillion visits, so I may pay him a visit.

Thats good to hear. I might have to bite the bullet soon and go see a DR. I might want to look at insurance first.

Thanks lifting. I can still lift, its just annoying. I may try to back way down on the exercises that bother it more. I have already gone a bit conservative, but maybe a bit more is in order.

If you can, find someone who is certified in ART (Active Release Technique)

I had reoccurring shoulder pain that was caused from too much benching years ago. I'd rest and it would get better, then I'd start lifting and it would get worse again. Eventually it got to the point where I couldn't do 5 or 6 pushups without feeling pain.

ART guys try to find and fix the cause of your pain, which in my case was scar tissue and a muscle/strength imbalance that caused extra tension/strain on a muscle in my shoulder that hurt. It only took 4 painful visits to break up all of the scar tissue and return me to a full range of motion, and a few weeks of shoulder rehab before I was 100%.

Now it is a year later and I am doing workouts with over 100 pushups, and setting PRs in my shoulder and bench press with ZERO pain.

If you can, get insured, see an ART practitioner and fix the root/cause of your pain.
Good luck man. I know how frustrating injuries like this can be.

6-19-08

warm up
squats and stretching

Hyp 3 Workout 3B 4x12 with 60 sec rest

Heel Raised Squats 1 and 1/4 Style

4x12 @ 135 lbs

Bulgarian Split Deadlifts
4x12 @ 115 lbs

Split Good Mornings

4x12 @ 95 lbs

Wood Chop

3x15 @ 42.5 lbs same as last time.
This maybe the hardest workout so far in NROL. Man the 1 1/4 squats are bad enough, then add the superset in and I was seeing pretty colors by the end of set 4. NOT A FAN! Well actually I do really like the challenge and the burn.

Good idea. I put a heating pad on it last night and tried to rub some kinks out of my shoulder and neck and it seems better today. So maybe I just have some muscle that is all jacked up causing the problem

wow - great BSS's.

I hear great things about ART - but never tried it myself. Give it a whirl.

Indian was so freaking good. Indian beer though not so good. Water downed bud light. At least the kind we had Jaj Mahal. So I ate until I broke my stomach, went to the show for a few hours then we bailed and went to The Flying Saucer and had a decent local beer.

All in all a great rest day and great start to the weekend. Long run tomorrow to burn off all the curry.

Marathon Training

Long run

7.02 miles - 1:08:26 (9:45 pace)

Mile 1 = 9:52
Mile 2 = 9:50
Mile 3 = 9:46
Mile 4 = 9:35
Mile 5 = 9:29
Mile 6 = 9:34
Mile 7 = 10:03

Hr monitor still hates me. It keeps going way low towards the end of the run. I don't believe my HR drops lower at mile 5 then when I start. What I could tell though my HR peaked at 167 but never got above that. If thats true I am very happy. I held pace with less effort. The route was my old route with the last mile back up the evil hill in my sub division. It not that bad of a hill but after 6.5 miles of rolling hills, your legs hate you for going this way. Still a great long run. Now some yard work and the Symphony tonight. Yeah!!!

Is the chest strap still on correctly toward the end of your run? Maybe you should readjust it periodically to be sure it's where it needs to be.

Enjoy the symphony tonight - will look forward to your report.

Yeah the strap is staying put. Its just odd after about 4 miles occasionally it just drops down about 30 bpm. I have tried everything I can think of. The problem maybe my technical shirts. I have read they can cause problems. I am not willing to change that though during the summer.

Thanks Mel. I think I just need to be smarter with my lifting and find alternative exercises for the ones that really make it flare up.

Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64

What a great concert. Borodin was a surprise to me. I really liked it. Originally scored for opera, it was an amazing piece. According to the Conductor Borodin was by trade a Chemist who had a passion for arranging classical music. He and some other composers created the "group of 5" composers. A group that was dedicated to maintaining their countries musical history. They were opposed to any European influences, a point of contention to Tchaikovsky and him.

The Rachmaninoff piece was just flat out stunning. I have heard this piece before, but not all the variations. The pianist, Joyce Yang was just simply amazing. At only 22 years old she blew the crowd away with her playing. It was amazed that the fact that she could play that fast and with such emotion. Even more amazing was that Rachmaninoff was a man with huge hands, which helped him cover the keys easier. She on the other hand she does not, which makes playing his music much more difficult. It was fitting they picked a piece that Tchaikovsky commissioned Rachmaninoff to compose for him. He could not have been that old as he was only 20 when Tchaikovsky passed away.

The Tchaikovsky piece was very interesting to me. I can now see the influence in Rachmaninoff's Symphony work. I have only heard The Nutcracker and 1812 Overture before, so this was a great experience to hear this. I could totally see why Rach admired him so much. The melodies were so soothing and peaceful.

It was interesting to hear the traditional Russian waltzes of Borodin then the two masters of Russian composers in one magnificent night. I liked the fact that the Conductor came out after Borodin and explained about each piece and their role in Russian music. It made me think back to something I read in the Rachmaninoff book. At one point in his career , staying pure to his music and not changing with the times. He mentioned how he felt out of touch with today's music and wondered if he had any thing to give to that day's music. Well after 65 years after is death, for one I believe he does and glad he composed such wonderful music.

Sounds like a great time, and some great music. If it's the Tchaikovsky 5th I'm thinking of, the Philadelphia Orchestra has it on CD (Ondine) and the 2nd movement opening horn solo is meltingly beautiful.

I have such a love/hate relationship with HRMs. Sometimes I feel the information is so helpful and sometimes I'm just like, dude, that cannot be right. (Especially when it refuses to budge from 0 no matter how much I reposition or wet it, LOL.)

I'm glad you had a great time at the symphony!

That's my biggest problem with it. I love it when it works. The only thing I have not tried is the gel they put on the cardiogram paddles. Supposedly that might help.

Hyp 3 Workout 4A 6x4 with 120 sec rest.

Barbell Bent Over Row

6x4 at 165 lbs (+10 lbs)

Barbell Incline Bench Press

6x4 at 120 lbs (+5 lbs) PR

Mixed Grip Chin up

6x4 at 30 lbs (+ 5 lbs)

Barbell Push Press

6x4 at 110 lbs (+5 lbs)

Dips
6x4 at bw (same)

Dumbbell Clean
6x4 at 50 lbs (+5 lbs)

Swiss ball crunches on bosu ball

3x15 at 70 lbs (+5 lbs)

Bike Ride

8.15 miles in 35:55

Great workout. My shoulder was not as mad at me as I thought it might be. The only exercises that caused any problems was the push press on the way down. It still was only slight so I fought through it. The incline bench presses felt good and I had a full range of motion on all of them.

The bike ride was fun. This is my longest ride to date. I know its not a real long ride, but I was pressed for time. Time now to make dinner!!

Marathon Training

3 miles Tempo run 26:22 - 8:46 pace

Splits
mile 1 - 9:14
mile 2 - 8:40
mile 3 - 8:26

What a great run. This is the 3rd tempo run in the marathon training and the fastest run so far. I took 45 sec off my time from last week. I was amazed that I was able to hold pace for that long with the hills. On a flatter course I could have done much better, but the hills will only help latter. The shoulder is not happy today. I tried doing some foam rolling on it and it felt ok when I went to bed, but woke to horrible pain in it. I think its definitely muscle related, when I massage it and put the heating pad on it gets better. So maybe now I can treat it and get some relief.

6-25-08

Warm Up

Squats 1x8 at 135 lbs - 1x5 at 165 lbs

Hyp 3 Workout 4B 5x8 with 90 sec rest

straight set
Heel Raised 1 1/4 style squats
5x8 at 165 lbs (+10 lbs)

Superset with full rest
Romanian Split Deadlifts
5x8 at 125 lbs (+10 lbs)

Split Good Mornings
5x8 at 115 lbs (+10 lbs)

Straight Set
Wood Chop
3x15 at 45 lbs (+2.5 lbs)

This workout felt better today then the previous ones. I am not sure the point of the 1 1/4 squats, but they do help me go down further then normal I think. I weighed myself today after the workout and I am still at 172.5. So no change in weight really. My official weigh in is on Saturday morning. This is what I weighed last week, so I imagine I will be lower on Saturday. So over all I am pleased that on average I have dropped my calories about 200 per day and have not really lost much weight. Meaning I am not losing muscle mass at this point in my cut. Well some what of a cut. Not sure I really want to be on a deficit too much during my training, but don't really want to bulk either while training for the marathon. By the time I run the race I would like to drop to 165 again. Just for a short time.
