(It's a fork, by the way. Hence, the "forkinator" title. Get it? Aw, nevermind... )
You are such a nutbar!!

Unfortunately, this is probably how tons of people do a deadlift, since they don't know how a proper deadlift needs to be done.
Boy, I was LIVID when I got told by my new bf (now partner) that I was doing my DL all wrong. Not angry at him, but at the staff in my gym who never corrected me on bad form, but instead preferred yakking to clientele doing cardio.
This is what happens: people THINK they do things right, but instead of being corrected they just keep doing what they do and then after they've done it wrong for long enough are convinced their (wrong) ways are the right one. And get mad at someone who finally tells them they are doing it all wrong... SINCE NOBODY EVER SAID ANYTHING.
If anything gets me mad is people laughing behind their hands at how bad others do things in a gym and then NOT correct the wrongdoers.. assuming they are just dumbasses that can't be corrected. They've never been corrected in the first place.
This is a major pet peeve of mine.
Frankly, another one is how these same people don't want to hear they are doing things wrong. At least, not from me...instead they prefer their own wrong ways as they assume gym staff will tell if they do anything wrong.Sigh...
What's wrong with being told you're doing something wrong and being offered a better way? It doesn't make you dumb or something... I'm grateful for corrections, as long as they are perceived as meaningful.

I've done so very often. Apparently I'm a bit out of the ordinary here.
A while ago I stopped doing this, at least.. will take a good look at how that person behaves (viz. would they seem like someone accepting advice or am I already on speaking terms with them) , and only then correct them.
I'm bummed about it though, as quite a few of the offenders do look like people who don't want to be messed with.
See it as lack of perception skills . I'm seriously considering to do a course in PT and start getting paid for correcting other people's form.
Espi, I can assure you I did not laugh at the kid when he was doing the deads. I nearly did go and talk to him about the form in fact but chose to walk away instead. He was looking around to see how many people were watching him and strutting around so not very receptive looking to me. I didn't start to laugh at him until he sat down and showed off his butt crack.... Almost the entire butt crack.
That sort of speaks to the fact that he is a pretty unaware person and most probably would not have accepted any advice from me.

Espi, you'd be an awesome trainer! You should do it!

How horrifying! I don't enjoy sneak peeks of butt cracks, especially in the gym. Anywhere, really.
OMG... can I just ask HOW the guy in the video is even standing upright after doing that to his back!?!?!?!?
I correct people sometimes (it's part of my job) but I find some are more receptive than others. I think women, in particular, like to know they're doing it right and have help. If I know the person, or if they look friendly or receptive, I approach them. If it's someone who's been corrected 50 times and still never changes, I just ignore it.

LOL!!! Of course it is okay to say that to another woman. I mean, at least from you I know you aren't saying it just to get in my pants.
So it's ok when it's one of the reasons, not the only reason?

Yes, you did the right thing by not speaking up (you're a much better observer than I am). You have just earned 10 karma points girl!

If only I'd be more secure about myself, otherwise I'd do it in a heartbeat.. I'm having this drive to teach others that's nearly passionate.
But my own form isn't impeccable either: even just a few months ago, I observed a few glaring errors myself once my SO made a video of mine. It's relatively easy to see what others are doing wrong, but all of a sudden it gets much harder to judge your own proper form. That's why feedback from people working in a gym is so important. Instead, they don't know anything or chose to not say anything.
It's so good to see how Karla has a PT who corrects her immediately!
My PT has earned his very high hourly rate over and over again by teaching me about form and not allowing me to go too high in weights. I am one of those people who would be lifting 300lbs by now with all sorts of bad form if not for his watchful eye. I don't laugh at people like the one I saw because I know that I have enough ego to go there myself without some help. My friend and I were discussing this recently and how some of these girls are lifting really heavy and how I am not permitted to lift to my max yet for 1 rep. Form before weight...
Espi, let go the ego and go ahead and be a trainer already. If you continue to wait until you are perfect then it will never happen. The unfortunate thing about learning is that the more you learn, the more fault you see with yourself even though in reality you are improving.
