The Metabolic Repair Manual is just that ... designed to teach those of us who have over-exercised and under-ate for years what to do to "fix" our metabolisms without gaining much fat. It goes beyond rest and eat, which is what I did and gained 25#!!! If only her book had been out two years ago!! Sigh. Ah well ... she does offer an idea of a program in there, but it is more knowledge and less program.
Same with The Fatloss Trouble Shoot ... it is more of a companion to a current program and goes into detail as to WHY your program may have stopped working. She has tons of info in there about different aspects of fat loss ... it's just a great resource.
I am not following either of these per se ... I have hired Leigh as my trainer and she designs my programs for me custom. It's working like a charm!

Thanks Julie & Lisa!

So, what you're saying is that the books aren't really a program AND the results are coming from distance personal training/consult? I'm sure that's not gonna fly with the hubby though. I just got almost 4 months of free small group training from someone he knows and sees as a good trainer and it's gotten me little or nothin'. It's a hard sell!

I think I'll still keep HELL in mind though. Maybe if I try it out, get results, and then bring up the other stuff, he'll be more excited about it!!!

Well I'm off. Brownie Girl Scout field trip to the grocery store!!! Should be great. I hope. I'm pretty sure I'll get to see at least one ADA Food Pyramid chart. We did get dd to eat more meat though. She's in gymnastics and noticed that she's starting to get bruises all over her legs. We explained that the iron in beef would help with that. She ate her first hamburger w/o complaining EVER. The next night she asked about the iron in her chicken breast; we just went with it. Whatever works!!!

BRENDA!!!! Good to have you back. Leigh helped me too. If you can swing it, buy the FLTS / MRM books.

Sorry to hear the bootcamp thing fizzled out. I can imagine the corporate cookie-cutter approach sucks and involves bosu balls.

I'm starting to cook some things around in my brain wrt what to do next. I'm realizing that I like the camaraderie of boot camp and I'm starting to get faster. Today I realized my calf muscles are starting to pop out too.

BUT I don't believe this program is going to give me much for any other muscles.

So I'm wondering if I should count boot camp as cardio and then lift 3 times a week on other days. Wed nights I usually go to the gym with dh and do some cardio. This week I lifted instead. I recovered just fine.

I guess the big thing is making sure I still want to be up at nearly 5am. I could try for June and see what happens.

I need a magic wand to create the perfect plan and a crystal ball to show me it'll work. Wouldn't that be sweet? If I find them, I'll share!

Like I said in Roland's log, I finally have some time to put in here. It seems like I try to make time and then things get busy. I don't think it helped to have my workouts on autopilot through boot camp (I did do this month again.) But, today was my last day and I'm trying to get dh to write me a good program (he's good at telling me what needs work and what I should be doing to fix it) so I can get started.

I actually went to the gym yesterday and lifted real weights -- you know, the black & silver ones -- for the first time in months. I felt whole. I will admit, this little side trip hasn't been without it's benefits. I'm quicker and have some agility. I remember my first burpee a few months ago. That 'jump' at the end wasn't even enough to be called standing up quickly. Now I'm off the ground. It's good. I did squats yesterday (bar only, mind you) and was DEEP. I mean calves to glutes deep. I'm sore today, but I'm finally at a point where I don't feel like I'm going to revert to doing a good morning out of the hole. It's so cliche', but I did strengthen my core and it's made a world of difference.

So, I should have some real workouts to post soon and some real gym time. My bodybuilding trainer is out of town this week so we had a sub. It was horrible. She did the drill sgt. act and I almost walked out. I don't do well with being yelled at at 6am when my hr is at 175 and I'm supposed to do another sprint (I sat a few out; I'm old & not stupid!) I decided about 10 min into class that I'm not finishing out the week and I'm finally really ok with it.

Tennis started a few weeks ago so I'm the parent-coach for my daughter's team again (my son plays in the older league now and they don't have parent participation). We've been at the courts a few times and my son & I play at about the same level so it's fun.

We've been out blading/biking already along the Mississippi. No snakes so I'm good with it. Still trying to figure out why I get shin splints when I blade outdoors. At the skating rink place, I'm fine. Running, I'm fine. Taking breaks makes it bearable.

So that's about it now.

Stretch your calves and foam roll/lacrosse ball roll ...

Missed you!
But girl, change that wintery avi, huh ... can't still be winter in Minnesota!!

Hi! Hi! Hi!

Julie: HILLS!!! It makes sense when someone points it out. We don't go on big hills, but the trail is an old railroad bed and it's got a grade going most of the time. And, yes, sadly it IS still winter here. j/k! I'll need to update that soon.

Major doms going on STILL! As dh said "what did you expect when you finally lifted some real weights?" My quads are screaming, but it's good and I'm happy with the pain. I'll take it now rather than later (I hope). My mom (almost 66) fell the last few stairs into their basement last week and sprained her ankle. She's so weak that she can't lift the crutches so she's renting a wheelchair. Sad. (of course, she says that once she gets back to Curves, she'll get her strength back)

The closest movie theatre is having free movies on Tues mornings all summers. It's about 2 miles each way and I've told the kids we can go, but we're biking there. DD is still on a gearless bike (she's just not quite tall enough for a "real" bike) so the hills are a struggle, but she's a trooper -- tears streaming down her face and all (she turned 8 on Sun but she's still only about 50#) DS is raring to go like mad so he struggles with waiting at busy intersections for us to catch up. Today we saw "Racing Stripes."

I'm on my way to the gym in a few to get a good workout in. Dh suggested light weights and heavy reps since I'm pained. I think I'll do dbs and some single arm/leg stuff too. We're going out of town for a few days so I'll start a new program once that blurp is out of the way.

And, my happy for the day is that we're getting a new roof (thank you Allstate) A few weeks ago we had a nasty hail storm. It looked like snow. My van looks like Animal (muppets) had a fun fest on the hood & roof. I guess the house's roof is messed up too. I'd never seen hail like that in my life. Probably 10 min steady and about nickel to quarter sized. Some was still on the ground the next morning.

Brenda, we've had some hail recently, too, over the last few days. I was actually hoping for roof damage so I could get a new one.....no such luck!

Yep, those storms have been less than fun this year -- good light shows though!

Great workout today -- even though I did the ultimate no-no and went into the gym without a plan! Everything was 3-4 sets of 15, raising the weights if needed. I just need to get a feel for what I can do again. I even did 5 chins in the squat rack. They were one at a time, but I did them! 50min plus stretching. Weirdos are out in full force! Some guy was whining like a little girl about how heavy things were. I think his trainer was about to smack him (heck, I was about to go over & smack him) I think it was curling day. There was a lot of that going on. I did some bss's and got weird looks (so I'm on someone else's weird things at the gym list, I'm sure). Didya ever notice that when you're feeling DOMS really bad, the best thing to do is lift? I feel pulled out again.

Tomorrow is work and travel so I'm not sure if I'll get any exercise in. Thurs we travel back home and get ready to go on a longer trip so I'm hoping to squeeze a workout in between car rides.

Bowling league tonight. DS is my partner. DH is teaching DD to bowl without the bumpers and he's the better bowler so it works out. DS and I do ok. We get it handed to us most weeks, but we have fun. Usually this league is younger kids & parents. This summer the "kids" are mainly in high school and looking for something to do while their normal leagues are on hiatus. Still, it's fun and a good family activity! (and how many people can say they own their own bowling shoes? )

I got a good workout in last Thurs in between car rides. Nothing to speak of all weekend. The hotel didn't have a fitness center. My nephew had a bench but it was loaded with junk and was in the sub sub basement (dark & dank) so I just ate like a pig, had a few drinks and enjoyed myself. We were in Kansas City so I had to try some bbq (actually it wasn't that different from what we do ourselves at home and the locals we talked to suggested we try "Famous Daves" which is actually from northern WI, so that was disappointing)

Anyway I was pretty stiff by the time we got down travelling. Our hotel had given our CONFIRMED room away in Des Moines so we didn't stop halfway to KC. (For those keeping track, this means the kids & I drove 3hrs on Wed afternoon & then 3hrs home on Thurs am, followed by 7hrs Thurs pm) Sun we drove directly to WI (about 9hrs in the car) followed by 3hrs home on Mon morning.

Mon we rented a canoe and took the kids out on a small lake. After sitting on a beach for another hour or so, we came home and decided to go work out. (I was feeling somewhat dead by then!)

Dh finally decided on my new program -- EDT for Fat Loss. Killer. I almost threw up (he said that was supposed to happen) and the last few reps of my last combo were not pretty. I'm still feeling sore.

Here's what I did on Mon:
combo #1 --
Front Squat/ Hanging Leg Raise (my arms still have marks from those strap things): 50 reps @65#

combo #2 --
Pull up/ Dips: 62 reps @ #12 assist (64# I think)

combo #3 --
RDL/ DB shoulder press: 57 reps @ 95# (RDL) and 15# (DB press)

No tennis this week so I get to workout with him all 3 times. He hasn't decided what day 2 is going to look like (and I fear that I don't want to know too far in advance anyway).

Diet is going well. I don't have a strict formulated plan. I just decided that I'm a big girl and I've been reading, thinking & experimenting for quite some time now. I pretty much know if a food is good for ME or not and about how much I should eat of it or at a setting. I tried starting this woe prior to the trip, but the trip pretty much kicked it out the window (my fault for the most part, I could have made better choices but I wanted to relax for a few days) so I'm back on strong as of Mon and better as of Tues.

No workout yesterday. I did 5 haul bags of river rock from the lumber yard into the van and from the van up the hill to where I'm doing some landscaping. I'm not sure how heavy they were, but they weren't terribly easy to carry and I know I have no problem wtih 40-50# bags of softener salt so they were at least that much. I may go back for more today. And last night was bowling so it's not like I was duff-sitting all day.

Today I'm working on getting out to mow the lawn and then do more landscaping (it sucks!). Workout tonight. Busy, busy, fun, fun fun...
