I'm finding that when I snatch a KB, it often turns into just a high swing-to-overhead. I guess that's paranoia about my shoulder, but I assume that's not correct form, that the elbow does need to break, right?
Hell yes the elbow needs to break. The DB/KB should make an almost perfectly vertical path from the floor to overhead, which it can't do if you lock the arm and swing the weight out in front of you. The idea is to get so much acceleration in the weight from hip extension/shrug alone that you don't even need to touch it from mid-thigh height to head height. After that it's a catch.
Ironically, the high-swing form is actually what hurt my shoulder last time I had a tweak.

I figured it was the same as with a bar, and that's where I'm fudging it: the shrug. Maybe if I just do it once a month, all the other corrective training will allow for it. I'll give it a shot at some point.

Doing well, so far. I haven't eaten totally clean, but my calories are cool.
Clean is overrated. I like to drag my calories through the mud before I eat them. Sometimes I take them out back and give them cigarettes and booze. Then once they start looking sloppy....I pounce. It's not pretty!
Do it like Ginko here and you'll be doing just fine
Bill, the sandbag rests on one shoulder, and much more than 3 reps will be done.
Keep up the good work Roland. We should get together to train the weekend before again.

There's still very much a swing element in there, though. I usually reset the KB on the ground, and go from there, more of a power version than a hang/swing version, but hey, if that swing is appropriate, I'll totally go there.

Yeah, seriously!
"Clean" helps me keep on track. A psychological issue, mostly.

I'll shoot you an email. The next few weekends are going to very full with kids and relatives. Maybe you're available some evening after work?

There's a place for both types. The swinging version is going to help endurance strength. Maybe the lighter bell for more reps won't hurt your shoulder as badly, either.

not kettlebells, but...
brad cardoza doing them w/100lb dbs for speed.
and roland, how are you expecting to get abz without the super strict, food weighing, zig zagging navy seal secret diet strategy by the diet gurus? We all know losing weight is not as easy as just reducing calories.

Did you like how I focused on the odd DB weight, and not the 78 reps in 3 minutes?
That number was quite impressive and threatening to me. Cuz I only got... like... 74 reps, of course. Maybe my handle weighed more? Yeah, that must have been it.
In the upcoming fitness event/competition, will you team up with your daughter or do you just pick up a fit-looking chick on the way to the beach? Galya might frown on the latter, I guess.

Hai! Playing major catch-up! Good luck on:
1. Abz
2. Competition
3. Herb from Bulgaria. (Although I'm skeptical that Galya approves of him. Does she know?)
So you have bruised arms from kbs too? I thought it was just me, not knowing what I was doing well enough. I have mini-half golfballs on both forearms from yesterday. I suppose the pain should help with more control the next time?
Yeah, domestic is good, but that imported stuff? Completely mellow high. No paranoia.

Same, though they should diminish over time as your form improves. At least, that's what Steve Cotter said, assuming my form improved to that point. Few better teachers than instant feedback/pain

Hey Roland, how do you estimate your caloric needs for the day? There are so many different formulas out there. When I put my weight into them and state my goal is fat loss I get daily caloric needs from 1,700 to 2,700!!
By the way do you also have a link for IF since you seem to be in the know!

First, I take back the idea that I can do 3-4 of those 100lb snatches. I can do them from the ground, but catching it into a swing is scary. I tried it with 80lbs and got 6 without a strap, then my grip gave way on the way down.

Not my daughter this time. One of Chris's clients needs a partner, so there ya go.

I do get bruises, but I'm getting better. I don't know if Steve Cotter's dvds show the technique, but his method seems less bruising than some of the others I've seen.

I think a good start is a good lesson, then the pain teaches/reminds you how to improve.

I went with 15 x bodyweight as maint, then subtracted 500. If that doesn't work, I go down some.
I don't have any specific links, but you can start with Mark Sisson. He's a primal eater dude, but also has a lot about IF.
ed always likes hearing about your backyard workouts. he is all about getting some tires onto the property, chin bar between some trees. TRX. and other cool stuff.

I'd like to get a sledgehammer and tire, next.
A slosh pipe is "in the works." A neighbor tossed out a huge length of 6" pvc, so I snagged it. Unfortunately, 6" caps aren't just available at Lowes or Home Depot. Problem...
It's weird that Joe posted that on his blog, then THAT NIGHT, the pipe was laying out at the curb. Weird coincidence.
oh, roland, I used the slosh pipes at Furman during running camp. they are great!!! it is amazing, I overhead pressed one for reps, and even a relatively light weight is challenging because of the balance required from the water sloshing about. I forgot about those!! we need those. of course, I want to put in a cinder track on the property. some day....
I might give up on finding the 6" parts and buy a 4" pipe and two rubber temporary caps and see how they work.
With these, you screw on the clamps and that's that. No pvc glue or anything. They had 4" ones at Lowes for $3-5, plus about $12-15 for 4" ABS (the black pipe, rather than white (PVC)).
I can mail order 6" ones, but I'm not sure they'll work and they are $10 each, plus shipping. I'll test on the smaller version and see how that goes, first.
Starting weight, 188lbs (Monday)
Around the belly/lovehandle region, 36" (pushed out to max)
Waist (where the band of my underoos rides), 34.5"
One week in...
weight, 185lbs (-3)
Around the belly/lovehandle region, 35.5" (pushed out to max)
Waist (where the band of my underoos rides), 34.5" (I think it's 34.25", but hard to tell)
Broland, you are going to need a longer slosh (ladies pay attention here!)
Around 9' will work well. 6 is too short. We've done the work.
Snatches- Cotter's swing (fluid style) snatch has no forearm problem. I've taught people to snatch and have ZERO arm problems in a few minutes. There is NO reason to bring it vertical from the ground. This is not O-lifting people. This is strength/power endurance work. Start light and work up slowly in weight.
Roland, yeah some nights would work. My days are ending earlier lately so that should work. Velocity closes at 8pm I think, but the beach is always open, as is my in-home lab, now complete with battling rope.
btw met Cotter on Saturday. Busy busy man. He may be on the Perform Better tour next year.

Yep -- lesson learned here. Endurance work is certainly not my area of expertise!
