But the TRX I have been researching it alot, and all I find are overly positive reviews. I was curious as to what you really think about it.
Cause I kind of really want to try one, but I dont want it to be one of those "ab roller" style products where you realize you blew a chunk of money.
No problem. I use my TRX all the time, but I'll admit that it's not perfect. Maybe Ogedei will chime in, since he resisted for a long time, then gave in and got one.
Anyhow, depending on what you want to do, you can use Elite Rings or a Jungle Gym II or Blast Straps.
I think the TRX and the Jungle Gym II are the closest in functionality, since they can both be attached to a door or hooked to something. There are more adjustments and attaching methods for the TRX, but if the Jungle Gym works for you, then it's probably a good choice.
However, with the JGs the strap is only 10 feet long, so you can't do rows or pushups from a very flat position as you get stronger. How they attach to the doorway is unclear, too. I think their is just something bulky on the other side to keep the strap from pulling through.
Jungle Gym
With the TRX. I can put it over my doorway and almost lay on the ground to do rows. It feels safer than walking up the wall two feet and doing rows up there.
Both TRX and JG have foot loop options, so you can stick a foot in there to do balance lunges, etc. It's cool, but I never really do that anymore.
Blast Straps are an option, but I think they have short straps, so are best attached to a power rack or something. No doorways or trees, there.
Elite Rings are pretty cool if you have a tree or something to work with. I've used them a few times. The straps are pretty long, so you could probably rig up something for a doorway, just like the jungle gym. A rolled up towel, with the straps looped over and stuck behind the door would do the trick.
The TRX seems pretty foolproof, but you pay for them having done the work. The door attachment is extra, too. If you get the "military" package, it's included, I think.
There are probably 6-12 of us on the forum with TRXs, several with Blast Straps, many with Elite Rings, and a couple of Jungle Gyms. All work.
My next purchase (of this nature) will be rings, but I'm not in a hurry at the moment.
I think the fact I could toss them in a suitcase intrigued me the most. Not to mention I could use it for a morning time workout before work without having to drive down the street to the gym, etc etc.

Thanks man.
That's the best part of it. That and it's fun to use, so it's motivating to keep up the workouts.
Way back when, many of us got TRXs at the same time. You can check out all the workouts and exercises that we threw together, here.
Now that it's nice outside, I'm going to startup with the backyard workouts again. The TRX works good on a tree.
I can chime in on the TRX, but can't add to much more than LD already said.
I resisted for awhile, yes, and it was strictly a price point thing, I was a student and I couldn't justify $200 for some strapping. I did experiment with ropes and handles, which worked and let me mess around with the concept. But I was always paranoid the rope would break. It never did.
I got the TRX for xmas this past year, I mainly want it because it was small and I would be able to use it outside. The weather is just getting close to that now. I have yet to really put the TRX through it's paces.
It adjusts fast, that is a nice feature and I strongly suspect of the products like it on the market it is the premium product.
As for the price, it may not actually be that over the top. I never actually found webbing that was rated as strong as theirs, not in any length, and the short stuff in truck tie downs wasn't super cheap.
At the end of the day though I suspect if you want something compact that you can take outside to let you do a variety of cool exercises your $200 will be spent well on this piece of equipment.
I did notice a few Jungle Gym's on the local internet buy and sell (kijij) so you might want to take a browse through craigslist etc to see if you can come across some used ones.
Og.

Haha, beware of using your TRX in hotels. I used to travel with mine on occasion. I would anchor it over my hotel-room door. One morning I guess it was making strange noises (creaking, etc) because my neighbor called security because she thought someone was hurt or trapped in my room. I didn't notice because I had my ipod on. Finally when I realized someone was knocking on my door and I looked out the keyhole....there was some dude staring at the anchor that was holding it in place. The hotel was not amused. However, the room service guy who was with security laughed about it every time I saw him afterwards. He would bring my breakfast and be all...hey, did you do your crazy workout yet?

ahahahaha!
I think I am going to snag one next month. If anything I can do some awesome row and pushups routines to blow off some energy in the morning time.
One of the "best" things about the TRX et al. is the addition of a basic rowing type move to the minimal home gym.
The back can be a hard one to hit with bodyweight, I have never had a great place to do pull-ups in any place I have ever been in, so having the ability to do rows with it is pretty cool.
Another favorite of mine is the one legged TRX assisted squat.
(Sorry for taking over your log Roland!)

Those are the two things I do the most. Those and use it for balance/assistance for 1 legged squats, since I suck at them.

If you can get it up and over a tree (or something), you can do pullups with the TRX, too.
I have a long rope that I use to throw over a tree branch, sometimes. Then attach the rope to the trx.
Tonight was a minimalist workout, since food is minimalist, too. I've been starving myself for the past few days, and plan to continue until May 10th or so.
A1, DB Incline Bench, 55 (8/8/8)
A2, DB Rows, 85 (8/8/8) +5 from last week
B1, One Legged Squat (6/6/6) - the type where squat down to kneeling with the trailing leg.
B2, EZ Bar Curls, 70 (8/8)
If I want to buy just enough to train to compete, what should I get? I'm confused. It looks like men compete with 24s or 32s, depending? Depending on what? Women compete with 16s or 24s?
Amateurs compete with 24s (2x24 in jerk). But now most comps are letting guys use 16s or 20s because it's such a young sport that most guys can't do 10 minutes with the 24s in jerk or snatch. I can't - and I've been working on it awhile.
If your going to train KB sport then I'd start with a pair of 16s. It'll take you awhile to work up to 10 mins with those in jerk and snatch.
By the time you work up to it, pick up a 20 or 24 for some assistance work.
For example my kb work today was
2x16kg jerks 6:20 60 reps (that's 60 reps without setting the bells down in 6 mins). working at 10rpm pace
then 2x20kg jerks 20 reps in 2 minutes.
then one arm 1x32kg clean and jerk. 2 minutes 20 reps
32kg one arm jerk 10 reps each side. 2 minutes.
32kg one arm swings. 3x20 each side, density style.
Other days I'll work snatch or longer sets of clean and jerk (long cycle). It's not all I'll do but just the kb portion.
Anyway, sorry to hijack but just to give you an idea of one training protocol.
It'd be fun to train together sometime. Always motivating

I'm IFing most mornings, not eating until 2-4pm. It's going fine, but today I had a weird experience. All I'd "eaten" was half and half in my coffee (70 cals worth) and a 40g protein shake at 2pm, but I was soooo hungry at 5 that I grabbed another shake from the car and suddenly felt guilty. Like I was wrong to drink it. Like I was cheating or something. This must be how eating disorder sufferers feel.
I'm not comparing my dumbness to someone with a serious problem, but I maybe got a glimpse.
Anyhow, down to 189 this morning, with four short weeks and two days til the Summit. Gotta look hot for Nick. Plus, I can't let Larrabee have abz before me!
(ETA - not touching the line about looking hot for Nick!)
I'm not stressed about it the summit, but that's a firmly defined timeframe for a goal.
I did purposely put on about 8lbs in the last few months. I'm back to where I started from a leanness perspective, and up about 5-6 lbs. So, I'm happy.
I think four weeks with a specific stop date gives me a little more motivation. Also specific, is the goal -- drop fat/maintain muscle.
Just so no one worries, my average calorie intake is probably 2000-2200, but pretty low M-F, but on the weekends I back off and relax a bit. Kids and wanting to do more aggressive exercise demands a bit more calories.

So how many calories are you having day to day now? Monday-Friday?
B1, Angled Deadlift to Press, +50 (8), +75 (6/6) - per side
B2, Corner Row w/towel, +75 (12/12/8+2)
Buy any Kettlebells yet?
Got a link to the Corner Row? it's not registering on my radar as something I have seen....
Do you ever have shoulder issues from dips?

Roland, have you done homemade cottage cheese yet (can't remember if that was this thread or not)? I keep meaning to, but I always seem to need milk as I don't drink that much of it and so never have it.

I've never made either one. My parents used to make yogurt with this trend yogurt making heating contraption, but I like this guy's method in the article.
Kefir's another thing I'd like to make. It's soooo expensive to buy.
I used to make homemade yogurt all the time when my kid was a baby. It's soooooo good. I used to make whole-milk yogurt though - probably why it tasted so good! I used one of those yogurt makers. They're cheap little contraptions that keep the milk at a constant temp while it yogurtizes itself.
its going to be warm this weekend - you could probably just bundle up the pre-yogurt, park the car in the sun and put the container in the car to let it ferment (used to do that with bread rising in the summer)
