Tabatas - I tried doing mountain-climbers once, but never again - I think by the time I got to the 6th set I only got 2 or 3 done in the 20 sec interval. I really should pick up the challenge with those again. When I did them regularly, I did jumping jacks. They are easier to do on cardio equipment, just because by the time you build up speed, 10s have gone by, but I'm still dripping and gasping for air at the end of the 4 minutes. It will be the longest 4 minutes of your life, but what a great feeling to be done with it!
A word of advice - don't be fooled by how easily you handle the first few sets - it will catch up with you . Have fun!

I am planning on doing the front squats (light!). Anyone else use another movement for tabatas that they like?
I like B2Bs - (B2B=bottom to bottom) - body weight squats BUT the pause is at the bottom not the top/walkaround/reset. Very tough and will trash your legs.
I did something a while back that sounds like tabatas with jumping lunges + simultaneous lateral shoulder raises. You look like a freakish injured bird flapping around while jumping, but it worked.

A tabata is always 8 rounds of 20 seconds on and then 10 secs rest.

I remember doing mountain climber tabatas once and by the last set I literally couldn't move my legs any more. Just to get one rep done was a MOMENTOUS challenge. I was so glad I was doing them at home because I must have looked ridiculous.
Oh yeah....I was grunting like an animal at the end. People were looking. It was hard. Very hard! Puke-worthy, for sure. Roland, you will be glad to know that I DIDN'T puke, however!
How about burpees? Or med ball stomps...or pushups.
Just some that I thought of right away.

I would think that Med Ball stuff would be fine as long as you catch the ball. But, if it gets away from you.....
Push ups didn't work too well for me. By the time I got through the first four or five cycles I'd hit failure and wasn't able to keep up.
I thought that lunges would work well, but they didn't turn out as well as I thought. I do think that Split Squats would work. You'd just change legs with each set.
But, I like burpees, squats, and jump squats the best.
I'd never heard the term tabata before. But that's what it was. Turns out there is a name for that type of pain. Ouch.
A true Tabata will always be cycling - that's how it was studied and the only tested application with demonstrable results. You could extrapolate to running (another high-intensity steady-state cardio example), MAYBE. But calling weight lifting stuff Tabatas isn't quite on the mark.
Its still a tough, tough workout, of course.
