I am 5'6 and have 7 inch wrists (though I am also fairly narrow) with huge hands I think it may help a little, for me at least, in that gaining muscle and strength seem to come naturally to me. Interesting discussion, no idea of science
Bree, I'm not sure how scientific this is, but here are some guidelines. And, for reference, I am 5'7" and my wrist is 5.5".
If your height is under 5 feet 2 inches,
then a small body size will have a wrist measurement of less than 5.5 inches;
a medium body size will have a wrist measurement between 5.5 and 5.75 inches;
a large body size will have a wrist measurement over 5.75 inches.
For women whose height is 5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 5 inches, then
a small body frame will have a wrist measurement of less than 6 inches;
a medium body size will have a wrist measurement between 6 and 6.25 inches;
a large body size will have a wrist measurement over 6.25 inches.
For women whose height is over 5 feet 5 inches, then
a small body frame will have a wrist size of less than 6.25 inches;
a medium body frame will have a wrist size between 6.25 and 6.5 inches;
a large body frame will have a wrist measurement over 6.5 inches.
Interesting! (carrying it over this page.
My wrist is 15 cm & I'm 158cm tall = 5.9 inches & 62.2 inches.
Actually right wrist is 15cm, left one is only 14.5 cm (5.7 inches)
Puts me in the middle cat. for length & indeed I'm small-framed at sub-6 inches for the wrist size.
Wasn't joking when I said to be afraid that it may snap in 2 for the weights I'm pulling.

At the moment my wrist is about 6.5" but I definitely have excess flesh there, so we'll see if that changes as I continue to lose weight.
Oh, and Jane - sorry to hear about your mother's trip to the ER (even if it was a minor issue). And I'm surprised to see you dropping out of the challenge. I'm always impressed with your determination and progress. Happy to hear that you're where you need to be for Hypertrophy though - best of luck!

Thanks, Anne!! No worries.....my determination and progress are as strong as ever. I just felt a little too much 'under the microscope', so to speak, and not the encouraging kind of attention . So, when the dust settles, I'll be posting updates again (and pics), as I'm still doing my monthly updates for sure. I definitely will be interested in seeing my July 08 - July '09 comparisons.

I'm 5 ft even and my wrist is about 6.5 inches. On the other hand I've definitely lost some size there (tightened my watch band twice since I started losing fat) so maybe my wrist size will be a tinier bit smaller when I'm done.

you measure your wrist up close to your hand around the small bony part precisely because it is unlikely to carry fat/fluid there compared to back on the forearm side where it will change more based on weight loss.
I've always hated that being small boned meant I couldn't get away with weighing as much (I'm 5' 6-1/8" -- shrunk recently from 5' 6-3/4", with a 5-3/4" wrist). Elisabeth and I were talking about that this weekend, but it didn't occur to me that that might have any bearing on muscle or strength-building potential. Hmm. I'm pretty weak so maybe there is something to that?
Strength is a sum of many factors including bone density, muscle mass as well as neurological. Strength training on its' own will help you get denser bones (and combat osteoporosis), bigger muscles (if you eat for it!) and over time you will simply get stronger due to habituation = neurological.

its' = its (sorry, couldn't help it -- the English teacher in me)
Without the apostrophe? http://englishplus.com/grammar/00000227.htm
My, you're right. . Of course you were, but still wondered why I had it wrong.
That must be because so many people write it's instead of its that you start to think the apostrophe must be included but then after the s.

Wowza. My wrist is over 6 inches, at 5'4" (a little less, I exaggerate my height). I guess I'm medium to large framed. And LOL on how weak you are Kathy. Give me a break, you lift much heavier than I do.
Yesterday I saw an old friend, she is very small boned, about 2 inches taller than me, weighs 10 pounds more, and wearing a size 14. I'm in a 6 now. Freaky.
Sorry to hijack yer log, Jane.
And my apostrophes always end up in the wrong place, but just because I type too fast.

Right there with you. My wrist is 7 inches and I am 5'9.5. I have been in denial for most of my life, until recently. I knew I was bigger, but never would I want to admit to being "big boned". I will now embrace.

Kudos on the nice workout! I have my first 3x15 on Friday. The 4x10 leg workouts are killer. I can't even go high with that Bulg/Step Up Superset. Alwyn is sure a killer in disguise.

I don't think I really lift heavier than you are able to lift...you are likely going lighter than what you can really do right now because you are just being cautious to avoid injury, no? And, yeah, sorry Jane!

Then, came home and cleaned up Violet's room and scrubbed it real good because she's at the groomers. Then, watered and fertilized all of my flowers. Now, off to pick up the pup and then hang with her outside for a bit since it's FINALLY nice weather tonight.
So, spent all day last Saturday in the ER with my mom. Then, spent all night last night in the ER with my mom. This was because she was completely compacted.....going too much further into what had to be done would be TMI for all of you...trust me! But, they had thought there might be a growth or tumor causing the obstruction, so glad it wasn't that. But, she sure went through the wringer last night.
And, now today.....it's my turn. Just spent hours in the ER because I cut my finger with the electric hedge trimmers and had to get stitches and a tetanus shot.
How many people hit the ER 3x within one week. I am so sick of them.
And, now I've got an effed up finger and a sore arm from the tetanus. BLEH!
Oh Jane, not going well for you this week. I'm so sorry that your mother is having such problems lately. That can't be helping her other issues. You know, our neighbour has electric hedge trimmers and I really don't like them. I suppose the only good thing is that you only cut your finger (I always assume that accidents with things like that involve reattachment). So, rest well, and treat yourself tonight. Be it a soak in the tub, or a glass of wine, or whatever. Here's hoping that tomorrow is a better day.
Sorry about the ER visits. Hope your finger heals quickly. I know it can be a royal pain trying to keep the bandages dry. Hope your mom does better too.
I know how serious bowel issues can be (I've worked with two people that needed surgical re-routing) so I'm super glad to hear that the scary possibilities got ruled out. Still, the ER is a miserable exhausting place to spend time so I hope the rest of your weekend has some fun or relaxation in it (not to mention puppy snuggles).

Oh Jane... I hope the weekend improved for you and you got some down time! I know what you mean about the TMI, my Nana had a similar issue a year ago, and I was tested for sure. I hope things improve with your mom, and I really hope your finger is better....
Thanks guys, but this was just a shitty weekend. Between the ERx and the damn tetanus shot, I am just feeling wiped. I cannot believe the pain of that shot....I can't even lift my arm.....and just the feeling of being run over by a truck. On top of that, my mom really isn't much better, and I just don't know what is going to happen. She sees her doc on Tuesday and I am wondering if he isn't just going to admit her to the hospital since she's doing so bad and has gone below 80 pounds. I think we may be looking at her final days.
OK, sorry for the whining, but it's been one of those weekends where I just want to cry. I even treated myself to a frozen custard tonight and even THAT didn't make me feel any better.
