Yeah I have problems enough with kettlebells, let alone stuff like that. Good on 'em though for getting that good at it.

Hee hee - yeah, I can see why.

I always order sauce on the side in restaraunts anymore. That is definately the killer when it comes to overall calories. Still the dinner does sound good. Be patient. It will come off soon.... It sucks that we can't get better daily readings on this...

AMAZING video!

It made me decide to insert turkish getups again in my next routine (starts tomorrow ) but it will be with the wimpiest weights available = a 2kg dumbbell.

Thanks Karla - yeah I know it will come off, and I did take care to only have a couple of spoonfuls of the sauce (what wasn't on the shrimp itself).

Yeah it's a pretty wicked exercise, but pretty cool too once you start to get it.

Default Weigh-in Update

219.5 - Gonna wait til tomorrow to see if it sticks, but was quite happy in getting on the scale today. But even if it doesn't, it's a great motivation to be good while in NYC this weekend.

Here's the readers' digest version: I was hospitalized in May 05 with cellulitis in my leg, and had time to think about things, and where I wanted to be in life. One place I really quickly figured out I didn't want to be was in a hospital bed. So when I got out of the hospital, I signed on at the gym. My highest recorded weight around that time was 354. Fast forward to today, when I've just broken into the 2-teens (219.5 actually). This after following a healthier and more constrained diet, along with working out. As it is now, I strength train 3x a week, one of which is with a personal trainer, who gives me the programs I use. I also do spinning 2x a week, but I don't usually log it. I imagine it's time for some progress pics as well - I have a "before" face shot on my progress photos link, as well as a fairly recent "during" shot.

Thanks for the "condensed" version! I think I'll recommend your log to my husband--maybe he'll get inspired... Kudos on your great progress though!

Hey Tom. Congrats on your new milestone! So it WAS the happy hours huh? Now that August is tomorrow, what's your new plan? Will you continue to skp the beer or will you allow yourself one or two a week as long as it fits calories?

Nice new avi too!

The skin on your face tightened up! That's one major change.
I'm hoping this will also happen for the rest of your body. This is what made progress look less impressive as it really was.. am going to look!

Loose skin can be a huge problem for everyone losing a major amount of weight. Some get lucky and see it 'snap' back. Others aren't as lucky. Wish I knew what the major difference could be..

Me too. I originally came here because of NROL, but the community here is so supportive (as you can see by the rest of the quotes) I couldn't help but stay on.

If that is in any sense true, it's only because I dug myself into a deeper hole to get out of. I know you've got your own set of impressive befores and afters yourself.

Still kind of undecided on this one - whether to abstain for August too, or whether to work in a beer or two. Regardless, I'm trying to train my brain to think of beer = dessert, where you only have one in an evening (even though you'd like to have more).

Thanks - I'm not sure I see that much of a difference, other than I know that the previous avatar was taken with my webcam, and the new one with my digital camera.

I think the last avatar was taken sometime in February or April, I could be wrong. Unfortunately I can't check the date on my progress pics because it's blocked from work.

Indeed - I'm not sure what's fat or what's skin, because I don't see much of a difference between the last progress pic set (July 6th) and this one (July 31st).

Default Weigh-in Update

218.825 - I couldn't really put it at 218.75, but 219 was a little too high, so I split the difference. Still, holding onto the 2-teens here.

As a postscript, I earlier noted that in subtracting my 5-day averages as of the end of the month from May to July, I get the following numbers:

May 1st 235.7 to May 30th 232 = 3.7 difference
June 1st 232.05 to June 26th 229.25 = 2.8 difference
July 1st 229.55 to July 31st 220.565 = 8.985 difference

Tom,

I went to some "fancy" beer place in VA last week and didn't feel like overdrinking. They did the four 4oz sampler thing, so I just asked the waitress to bring me one at a time. I tipped her at the outset of this and she did very well by me. I savored them more slowly when I didn't have four in front of me.

Good idea - I'll have to see if places around here offer samplers. I know some that do.

Default Strength Training

All weights in pounds.

A Turkish Getup 2x5@20 (each side)

B One-Arm Swings 2x10@40 (each side)

C Core Push Press + Goblet Squats 3x10@40

D Assisted Pull-up 3x10@-160

E1 Front Squat + High Pull 3x12@40 (each side)
E2 Front Squat + Lateral Raise 3x12@15 (each side)

F1 Pushups 3x10@BW (each side)
F2 Row 3x10@40 (each side)

A Turkish Getup - Better on this one today. No increase in weight until technique improves - I know that a kettlebell of the same weight would be difficult on my shoulder.

B One-Arm Swings - Yup, 40. Cool.

C Core Push Press + Goblet Squats - I was surprised to use the 40 on this one. Probably because of the extra rest day (usually go Sat, Mon, Wed for strength training, but took spinning yesterday).

D Assisted Pull-up - Yup weight was on now as -160 for 3x10 was a challenge.

E1 Front Squat + High Pull - 40 again.

E2 Front Squat + Lateral Raise - 15 here, which I will try again next time I do this workout.

F1 Push-ups - I think I know what's different, other than my shoulder being better. I no longer feel like a fat man doing pushups. All of the stress is on my chest muscles, where it belongs, not on a sagging core.

F2 Rows - Guess what, 40.

Overall - This is a long workout with the addition of the TGU and swings and the third set of the F superset. Still, it's a good one I think.

"As far as (healthy) eating, either do it, or don't. Same issues repeated over and over is just insanity. We either commit to the endeavor or pay lip-service to it. This is the hardest part of the whole process, and it needs to be practiced more than the actual physical training. It's mind training." ~ Matt Thorne
