True enough - I do use chicken broth where I can, especially for cooking rice.

Friday afternoon is "happy hour" at work. (people start cracking open beer around 2-3pm while we all finish up our work for the week) Someone in my office went to Indianapolis a couple of weeks ago & brought a 4-pack of Dogfish Head 90-Minute IPA. I was drooling all over it. He said that a coworker was going back in a couple of weeks and he'd talk to him about bringing some back for us. YEAH!
I'd suggest trying the Raison d'Etre (which I think you have already) or their India Brown Ale - both are excellent.

I haven't tried their brown ale. I so wish we could get dogfish head out here. The same guy was talking about how he had about $100 worth of beer shipped out to him once. Cost him $40 in shipping. I think I'd rather just drink what we can get here.

We're talking about making a trip out to Portland this winter to visit my family, so we'll have many opportunities to get our hands on stuff we can't get here in KC. Perfect timing, too. winter seasonals are my favorite.

Default Strength Training

Beginner Program #2
Encyclopedia of Kettlebell Lifting
By Steve Cotter

All weights in kilograms.

A 1 Arm Swings 2x10@16

B Turkish Getup (each side) 2x5@8

C 1 Arm Clean and Press (each side) 2x5@16

D 1 Leg Deadlift (each leg) 2x5@16

E Split Squats (aka Lunges - each leg) 2x10@16

F 1 Arm Snatch (each arm) 3x5@16

G Front Squat 2x10@32 (2 KBs)

H 2 Arm Swings 1x20@16

A 1 Arm Swings - As these are part of my current workout, not much to see here. (Felt good doing 'em with a kettlebell though)

B Turkish Getup (each side) - This was a disaster on the left side especially starting out. Definitely more warmup needed before even attempting these.

C 1 Arm Clean and Press (each side) - A sort of new exercise for me with a kettlebell, so some coordination/form issues, but on the whole, not too bad.

D 1 Leg Deadlift (each leg) Ah lack of balance strikes again - I was pretty ok on the right side, but the left definitely needs work.

E Split Squats (aka Lunges - each leg) Cotter calls these split squats, but I've always seen them referred to as lunges. At any rate, I held one kettlebell on the same side as the working leg, did the set, then switched to the other side. Was feeling it toward that 10th rep on both sets.

F 1 Arm Snatch (each arm) - Another new exercise, particularly with a kettlebell, and no surprise here, much more work needed on the left hand side.

G Front Squat - Another oldie but goodie, but this time I opted for holding both 16's. Definitely made a difference too.

H 2 Arm Swings - More swings to round out the set. Not bad here, but I was tiring toward the end.

Overall - I opted for something different today, as I had to do something since I didn't work out yesterday. So, I figured I'd play with my kettlebells, and give another of Steve Cotter's workouts a go. Not a bad showing, but I know form could be a lot better particularly as some of the exercises were new. Still, I'm happy I worked out and feel better.

Default Weigh-in Update

222.25 - Back down to my lowest recorded weight so far, so I'm guessing my happy hour on Friday was a success. (Though next time I'll order the chili OR the grilled chicken salad but not both.)

As a testament to my bad form on the snatch, I've got two faint bruises on my left forearm - the right one is fine. Still, I was feeling a little DOMS when I woke up this morning, so it was a good workout. I think I like this one better than the other, because I can do all the exercises (even if with bad form). As a side note, I'm glad I picked up lighter weight kettlebells, as the TGU was tough enough with an 8, let alone a 16.

Yeah kettlebells are fun to work out with. I much prefer them over dumbbells. As for being sore? I was when I was in bed just before I got up but that has since dissipated for the most part. About the only place left is the legs, and that's not really that bad. I'd recommend getting a kb, or at least test driving one to see what you think.

True, but would there be anything to prevent you from trying one out? That way you'll know what you want to do, and what size kettlebell you'll need to do it with. And if you're going to get more than one, get different sizes - like an 8 and a 12. I bought mine in pairs til I actually started working out with the bells I had. You can definitely get a great workout with one bell.

Default Spinning

Since I did strength training on yesterday, I took spinning today. (Running a kind of bizarro world schedule this week.) Different instructor, which was good - as it kept things interesting. Whereas the night time instructor likes to hit 9's and 10's in terms of exertion level, he gives us 1's and 2's to recover. The daytime instructor seems to like hitting 7's and 8's, and recovers at 3's and 4's and takes fewer of them.

many years ago, family friends moved from California to Chicago - and couldn't get some favorite beer there. When they came for a visit with their toddler, they bought a car seat for the rental car (needed a 2nd one anyway), and shipped the seat in the hold full of beer.

Default Weigh-in Update

221.75 - I'm getting out of the weight predicting business... Unless of course the gain shows up tomorrow? Still, this is the lowest number I've yet posted, so I'm still pretty happy, even if it is fleeting.

ETA: 223.1 for a 5 day rolling average is also the lowest I've posted today.

200 seems like quite a ways away - for right now I'd be happy with getting under 220, but thank you for your good wishes.

Default Strength Endurance

AMRAP, 1 Minute per exercise, rest at end of circuit and as needed within the circuit. All Exercises except A6 were done with a 30 lb dumbbell.

A Circuit x 3
A1 Goblet Squat
A2 Core Twist
A3 Arm Curls
A4 One Arm Swings (30 Secs per arm)
A5 Half Squat with Overhead Press
A6 Curl-ups (no weight)
A7 Core Push Press
A8 Squat with Upright Row (30 Secs per arm)
A9 Row (30 Secs per arm)

A1 Goblet Squat - These were pretty good, though ironically the 3rd set went better than the 2nd. Not sure why.

A2 Core Twist - Balance suffered once, but the rest was ok.

A3 Arm Curls - Better form here, with less hip involvement is a good thing.

A4 One Arm Swings (30 Secs per arm) - Did ok here too, but I think that's because I did so many swings on Sunday.

A5 Half Squat with Overhead Press - This was tough, but not quite so tough as last time.

A6 Curl-ups (no weight) - No perceptible change here.

A7 Core Push Press - I tend to do 12 of these, but I think I am getting to the point where I can make it 13.

A8 Squat with Upright Row (30 Secs per arm) - Form, form, form. The hardest part is remembering to go down into a full squat.

A9 Row (30 Secs per arm) - I just did 25 each arm, figured that's probably long enough.

Overall - Not bad this time. Certainly better than the last time I did this workout. Nutrition of course and the workout leading up to it played a factor I think. I'll be glad though to switch to a less metabolic lifting program for a change of pace.

A week, maybe two if we keep following the method we've been using to change programs. (Every 6 weeks or so.)

Default Masoor Dal

Inspired by the thread in the recipe section about what to do with lentils, I figured I'd do some research. I found this recipe for masoor dal (red lentils), and figured it was high time I visited the Indian grocery store. It was clear I was pretty much a n00b, so the guy behind the counter got whatever stuff I needed to complete the recipe. He asked to take a look at the recipe and after reviewing it said it was a good one. To which I responded, yes I wanted something that'd fit my newbie abilities. He also cautioned about using chiles as he said he'd have American friends crying because the food he'd make was so hot. I listened and learned well.

I'd never worked with chiles before, so I was kind of exciting (I'd always just used powdered cayenne pepper. Having looked online for a how to as to just how to remove the seeds from the red chili, it said to use rubber gloves (which of course I did). The green chili I deseeded, so as to tone down the dish on my first try. Everything went pretty well, but for two issues of my own making - one was adding some water to the pot as it looked like it might all boil away. The result was a little more water than one might like in the end product, but I cooked it a little longer and that seemed to remove some of the extra water. The other issue I created was in reading the recipe, it says to add the oil (after frying mustard seeds, the red chili and the asofetida powder in it) to the dal. Figuring this was a rather specific request, I did just that - added only the oil to the dal. The result I have to say is pretty darn tasty, but I can only wonder what the full on version would be like. I intend to find out soon.

great job on the workout and that recipe looks great. Do you eat Lamb? I have a Curry Lamb dish that is from the same site you went to that is just amazing. It takes a while to cook and build the flavors, but well worth the time. I next need to get a good indian spinach dish.

Yup, I'd be interested in the lamb curry. Here's a recipe for palak paneer I've got saved, but yet to try.

221.25 - I SOO wanted to move the marker over to the 221 mark, but that would've been dishonest. Still, a slow steady loss is a good thing. My 5 day rolling avg graph looks like the picture of the boa constrictor swallowing an elephant from The Little Prince, except at 30 degree angle.

As a side note, the masoor dal tastes even better today - the flavors are blended and quite tasty. I can't wait to make the full version to add some heat.

here is the lamb curry

Indian Lamb Curry Recipe | Recipezaar

like the dish you made, watch the spices the first time. The next day the heat level is much greater. Still worth making.

Thanks for the spinach recipe. That was exactly what I was looking for.

Was laughing at this! The Little Prince is my all-time favorite story!

Do you think the Paneer Recipe (my all-time favorite Indian food) can be made with milk instead of cream? Have you tried it?
