This weekend has been brought to you by the Letter F
F is for Fail - I failed to really limit consumption of beer and/or food while on the trip. My eating schedule also fell all out of whack too. I also failed to workout as I could've gone to the local (in NYC) YMCA and worked out, but didn't.
F is for Fun - It was enjoyable being in a big city again with all the benefits (and drawbacks) one has to offer. My cousin's fiance competed in a triathlon on Saturday, and both of them did a swim around Governor's Island on Sunday. I actually made it out to Governor's Island as well, and walked around it while they were in the water. The engagement party on Saturday was good too, a kind of a pre-meet before the wedding in August.
F is for Food - Lots of good food to be had - (Friday) pizza at Totonno's (with Brooklyn's Summer Ale), Raspberry Smoothie at Mona Lisa's, (Saturday) Farmer's Pan (scrambled eggs with potatos, peppers and weisswurst, with Koestritzer's Black Beer) at Cafe Steinhof, various hors d'oevres along with Brooklyn's Lager, Ommegang's Hennepin Saison and their Abbey Dubbel, (Sunday) basted eggs with buttered toast and orange juice at my cousin's, a turkey burger and fries with Six Points Sweet Action at Johnny Mack's and finally roasted eggplant tomato soup with seafood paella (no beer) at Cebu on Sunday night. This does not include the food independent beers I had on Friday - Brooklyn's Hefe Weizen, Stone's IPA and Brooklyn's Pilsner. The other beers I picked up but did not drink were Unibroue's Fin du Monde, another Brooklyn Pilsner, and something else whose name escapes me at the moment.
F is for Follow-Up - A couple of things I learned: is that it's better to treat beer as a dessert, and just have one for the evening, rather than several. Also too, I learned the value of general activity. Without the walking around I did I'm sure I would've been higher than 233 on the scale today, as that was far more food and beer (over the course of the weekend) than I've had on a Friday happy hour, and the resulting weight gain was more limited than expected. Apart from going to the gym, I really don't do all that much - this has to change if I'm going to see the results I want.
F is for Final - All in all though a very good weekend, even if the heat made things a bit uncomfortable (esp sleeping with no air conditioning).

Glad you had such a terrific time and weren't punished as hard as expected. Yes, walking around for most of the day even at a normal slow pace can burn quite a bit of calories!
Hmmmm.... Very cool that you had a good time in NY but holy cow Tom, your reports kill me. I gain weight just reading them!!
I am very grateful reading the past weeks of your log that I am not into drinking beer. That seems to be a great way to put on pounds and not get any real sort of nutritional value. When I was a teen, I went to Germany and drank great German beer for a whole year. Then I came back to the states and my peers through a party for me complete with Millers. I puked my guts out for the whole next day and never got into drinking American beer again. Now there are so many good American Brews (especially here in Oregon) but I still am not into the whole beer thing. Whew...

Indeed - I was kind of surprised myself. It wasn't all day walking either - just more than I'm normally used to.

Yes, Oregonians do support their locals, and with locals such as Rogue I'd imagine that'd be easy. And what you said is true about putting pounds on without nutritional value - which is why I'm thinking of it more as dessert now rather than a drink. A small difference perhaps, but maybe enough to build a change in habit around.

What a fantastic-sounding weekend! And, one well-enjoyed.
Even if you did put some of the weight back on (and it will come back off quickly with good discipline), at least you did so enjoying food and drink that was worth it. (Thinking back to the sad times I have blown good progress on Denny's or Golden Corral-type fare -- that's the worst feeling afterward!)

Tom, that sounds like a GREAT trip!!! My kind of trip, for sure! If I was in NYC, I'd definitely be partaking.......gotta live a little!
I agree - also lived today, as I had to return to the chinese restaurant today to pay my bill from yesterday, and ended up having moo shu chicken, which I rarely have. That's not so much the problem, but the fried noodles that they put down as filler/appetizer. So, I expect I'll be up in weight tomorrow, but I feel positive about my plans to go lower now.

Wouldn't the alcohol hinder more than help?

Yup, I've had those moments, but the key is to make them moments and realize tomorrow is another day.

233.5 - Up, as expected, but not nearly as much as I thought it would be. I have to figure this out as I'm wondering if it's dropping the heavy training (I did spinning class Thursday and yesterday, with no strength training in between), or walking more, or a combination of both which is producing this effect. Oddly enough, even though I'm higher in weight, I'm also more optimistic that it will come off.

I'd say it's probably upped food choices (Chinese is not known to be low sodium or low cal and there was a lot of food/alcohol consumption with your trip) combined with lower activity levels overall.

AMRAP, 1 Minute per exercise, rest at end of circuit and as needed within the circuit. All Exercises except A6 were done with a 30lb dumbbell.
A Circuit x 3
A1 Goblet Squat
A2 Core Twist
A3 Arm Curls
A4 One Arm Swings (30 Secs per arm)
A5 Half Squat with Overhead Press
A6 Curl-ups (no weight)
A7 Core Push Press
A8 Squat with Upright Row (30 Secs per arm)
A9 Row (30 Secs per arm)
A1 Goblet Squat - I think I was getting a fuller range of motion because I was tiring out by the end of each set.
A2 Core Twist - This is actually more of a recovery now that I keep the dumbbell in the same position at the goblet squat.
A3 Arm Curls - Definitely easier than the kettlebell, as it's easier to grab and hold onto.
A4 One Arm Swings (30 Secs per arm) - Don't like swings with dumbbells, but these went ok.
A5 Half Squat with Overhead Press - This was a tough one today for whatever reason - pushing to get to the end of the set was tough esp on the last one.
A6 Curl-ups (no weight) - I have to keep concentrating on these, keep striving for fuller ROM.
A7 Core Push Press - Tough again, no surprise here.
A8 Squat with Upright Row (30 Secs per arm) - Again, minding the squat is needed here, but the db is much easier to handle than the kettlebell.
A9 Row (30 Secs per arm) - I think the reason why the kb's seemed easier is that the bell extends beyond the hand. I was sucking wind pretty hard by the time I got to this one, but also thankful as I know the round and eventually the workout would be over soon.
Overall - I feel I should say "Hey look! A workout!" because I've not done a strength training workout since one week ago. I think that and the fun weekend contributed to a definite case of ass draggery today. But, I got it done.

With the increased food/beer I'd've expected my weight to be even higher, but it wasn't. That's why I was wondering if the walking had something to do with the lessened impact.

When i went to NYC I ate a ton and did not gain any weight from all the walking. Then again my wife wanted to walk every place. I think your on to something though. Maybe adding some low impact cardio would help you burn the calories faster.
With the increased food/beer I'd've expected my weight to be even higher, but it wasn't. That's why I was wondering if the walking had something to do with the lessened impact.
The walking would have kept things in check since you can burn as many calories walking as you can in heavy workout. So with your calories not being in check as well, you still gained but not as much as you would have.
Calories have been in check here for the last month (for the most part). All I'm doing right now per Leigh is walking/aerobic activity that keeps my HR at around 117, foam rolling, and stretching. No lifting for at least another week. I'm down 15 lbs.

I'm walking 60 miles for a breast cancer cure, September 11-13, 2009! Please support my walk and help me raise funds for cancer research by donating to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day: http://www.the3day.org/site/TR/Walk/...nal&fr_id=1300
234 - I imagine that I'm still recovering from this past weekend, and I'm also sure that lack of sleep is a contributing factor. Will hope for better numbers this coming week.

AMRAP, 1 Minute per exercise, rest at end of circuit and as needed within the circuit. All Exercises except A6 were done with a 16 kg kettlebell.
A Circuit x 3
A1 Goblet Squat
A2 Core Twist
A3 Arm Curls
A4 One Arm Swings (30 Secs per arm)
A5 Half Squat with Overhead Press
A6 Curl-ups (no weight)
A7 Core Push Press
A8 Squat with Upright Row (30 Secs per arm)
A9 Row (30 Secs per arm)
A1 Goblet Squat - These weren't too bad today, a sign of progress I hope.
A2 Core Twist - Not too bad here, though I experenced some grip problems in the last set.
A3 Arm Curls - Major grip problems here - I might bring a towel next time and put it through the handle to them next time.
A4 One Arm Swings (30 Secs per arm) - Yay for kettlebell swings (vs dumbbell swings).
A5 Half Squat with Overhead Press - Still tough, but manageable.
A6 Curl-ups (no weight) - These were ok, but would like to get to the point where I can do actual situps.
A7 Core Push Press - Shoulder wasn't tweaking as badly here, which I'm hoping is a sign of progress/healing.
A8 Squat with Upright Row (30 Secs per arm) - As in the past, attention to actually squatting is wanted here.
A9 Row (30 Secs per arm) - As always thankful to get through these to end the set/workout.
Overall - Once again, I was dragging by the end, though I'm thinking it might be due to the extra weight of the kettlebell as well as its configuration. I actually did this workout yesterday (Saturday) but didn't post til now.

I'd seen it like a gazillion times and often wondered whatever it was!
Yeah, I first heard of it from NROL4W from the special workouts at the end of stage 1. Little did I suspect that I'd be doing that sort of routine. For some of the more complex moves like the core push press it works out to about 10 or 12 reps. Tim wants me to do all reps slow and controlled but still it's an exhausting workout.

225.75 - I about fell off the scale when I saw this number... Well, maybe not fell off, but I certainly did do a double take. So I'm going to take a "HOLY SHIT!" and a "HELL YEAH!". It's too good to believe, but I'll take it. (Then again, I was good this weekend, even on the 4th, and the infection seems to have been taken care of.)
