No - I don't have any bands, and I'm not sure they'd be welcome at the gym I train at.

I just realized you had one of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite movies/mini-series (I confess to having both versions - that's how much of a Dune fan I am)

I read the first two or three books as a teenager, and have seen the film but not the miniseries.

Because the gym manager doesn't allow the use of equipment that is not the property of the gym due to liability issues.

Yup I can understand the reasoning, otherwise I'd've brought my kettlebells in a long time ago.

Default Measurement Update - 12/23/08

Weight - 215.5
Waist - 44"

Maybe the loss is stabilizing now and I'm getting to really losing fat. I'm very interested to see what tomorrow brings, but I'm happy with these results.

Weird for any gym (even PF) to not have bands though. Perhaps you can request them since they fit the "no grunting" rule. LOL!

I was waiting for the drops every day to slow or stall. At some point it had to happen. Wait it out. A woosh is just around the corner. The longer the stall the bigger the woosh it seems.

And the question will be - we have the machine that provides assistance... why do you want the bands?

Yes - seems like it was going too fast there, which is why I thought it was water weight being dropped off. Even though it's not as thrilling as seeing the number decreasing every day, I think it's now that the real work begins.

Tom, I bring mine to the gym all the time, and aside from a few weird looks (from trainers, too!), no one bothers me. I hook them up to the squat racks or the smith machine.

Re: bands vs. the assistance machine: The band gives you the most help at the beginning of the lift, but as you're driving the weight (or pulling yourself up), the assistance decreases so you are able to accelerate. I'm finding the transition from assisted pull ups to bw pullups much easier with the bands, than the machine.

You can buy them here, on sale:
EliteFTS - Powerlifting and Strength Training Products and Knowledge for Lifters, Athletes, Coaches, and Trainers

I have no idea how to make that clicky.
ETA: magically clicky! I love technology.

That sushi looks YUM for lunch! I've never had scallop sushi, I always wanted to try. I only recently realized how healthy they are...and never knew you could eat them raw!

Every time I read your daily food, I wish I had a Wegmans near me...there was one up where I went ot college...it was the BEST!

Happy Holidays to you and yours Tom!!!

It was really good. I opted for the sashimi so I could have the brown rice rather than the sugared white rice. (As I understand it, sushi actually refers to the rice, sashimi is the fish.)

Yup I'm VERY grateful to have a Wegmans here - as you can tell that's where I do the bulk of my shopping.

And the same for you and yours - having read your log and the feast you're preparing I'd say it happy holidays is a sure thing.

Default Measurement Update - 12/24/08

Weight - 216.0
Waist - 43.75"

Well, I'm guessing more sleep and a better estimate of the Japanese food would've helped me on the weight, but for whatever reason my waist seems to contracted a little, which I'm pleased about.

Agreed. After a few months of going the wrong way, any movement in the right way is greatly appreciated.

Default Christmas Eve 2008

Wow, it's here already - December 24th, Christmas Eve. I'll be spending it at one of my aunt's houses as we stand watch with the traditional Wigilia dinner. It's customary for the dinner (as we've celebrated it) to be eaten by candlelight, with a variety of meatless dishes (seafood however is ok), including scallops, shrimp and of course pierogi. However, prior to the meal itself is the breaking of the wafers. Each participant has a rectangular wafer at their table, which they will take to everyone at the table, so that each will break off a piece of the other's wafer, wishing them the best of the season and for the New Year. An extra setting, symbolic of the Christ child is also set. For me, this is what Christmas is, not really the 25th, as there is the excitement of anticipation.

And speaking of anticipation, I plan on picking up my winter selection of beer after work. (Yay!) My distributor was able to secure a sixtel of Troegs' Mad Elf, which, to my mind, is a real coup, because most places want the sixtels, not the half barrels. (For those new to this log, a sixtel is a sixth barrel, or the rough equivalent of 2 cases.) It's a great beer, but at 11% abv (alcohol by volume) a maximum of 1 in a night is probably a good idea.

Although I'd seen their products, it took listening to a great review on a podcast (Should I Drink That?) to get me to get some for myself. (Apparently I was ahead of the curve, one of the Philadelphia Inquirer's food writers gave it a nod, and the stuff disappeared from the shelves near Philly.) The beer would be Shmaltz Brewing's Jewbelation 12, and from the sounds of it it's quite the taste extravaganza. With 12 different malts and 12 different hops, and 12% abv, it'll definitely light anyone menorah. The brewery is proud not only of its beer but also of its shtick - they have one line of beers called He'Brew - The Chosen Beer, one of which is called Messiah - The Beer You've Been Waiting For, among other creative names. They also make and market the Coney Island Lager line which has some interesting labels and names on its own.

Since their Kaiser Pils was SO good, I decided to, (if it's still in stock) to get a case of Pennsylvania Brewing's Saint Nicholas Bock. I've heard good things about it, but have yet to try it myself. Since I've had and enjoyed their Oktoberfest, Pilsner and Kaiser Pils, I doubt I will be disappointed.

Going back to that one in a night, I plan to have a pint of the Mad Elf tonight as I listen to my all-time favorite Christmas CD - Christmas Night, by the Cambridge Singers with John Rutter conducting. All of the Cambridge Singers CDs are top notch, but this one is the jewel in the crown. As such, it has the pride of place for being played on Christmas Eve.

So, in that vein, I want to wish all of my readers/supporters/encouragers the very best and happiest of holidays. Whichever ones you choose to celebrate, it still comes down to family, friends, food and fun. May all four find their way to your door this season.

Somehow that emoticon appeared cranky rather than resigned. In any case, the giant bands are really fun, and if anyone ever curls in the squat rack when you're wanting to squat, you have a rubber band at your fingertips!

Tom, your Christmas Eve celebration with family sounds wonderful. My best to you and your family. And big wishes for a happy and healthy new year.

Default Strength Training - 12/24/08

All weights (except for B) are listed per hand.

Warmup - 25 Squat Thrusts

A DB Power Clean and Press - 3x5@55

B Pull-ups - 3x5@-55

C Bulgarian Split Squat - 3x5@30

D Circuitx2
D1 Push-ups - AMRAP 25, 15
D2 DB Row (L) 1x15@55
D3 Push-ups - AMRAP 13, 9
D4 DB Row (R) 1x15@55

A DB Power Clean and Press - These were more difficult today, especially on the left side. Not sure why, but I'll be pushing 55 again on Monday.

B Pull-ups - All -55 again. I've been mistakenly calling these Chin-ups when they're actually pull-ups.

C Bulgarian Split Squat - It's a sad commentary on one of my workouts when the BSS turns out to be one of the best exercises in the workout. A minor tip aside, these felt good.

D Circuit - As before, feet on bench with a little improvement in the reps for the push-ups. Rows were as before, to be inline with the presses.

Overall - Didn't have the mojo today, but I'm glad I got the workout in and done. (I can usually tell when the mojo is absent - it takes me forever to get the workout started, and such was the case today.)

You and I have the same type of response here.

I love your description of your family tradition. I know you'll have a wonderful time. Have a Merry Christmas too.

P.S.: I decided to branch out into what I consider fancy cheese land. Bought some edam because I've never had any. I have to say I was impressed with the texture but not the taste (too mild). I guess I like cheese to have some bite. Any way, I'll have to find something to do with it.

Tracey, Edam is Dutch cheese. Most Dutch cheese is pretty decent but doesn't have a distinguishable flavour, except for the very old cheese that I do like. Used to be a young cheese lover, but have developed a taste for old cheese.. too bad since it's not just more expensive but also has more allergens.
A much younger cheese that is nice, is the fake Emmenthal cheese, called leerdammer.. very nice & nutty flavour, and at a far cheaper price than the real thing. See, e.g. Old Amsterdam Cheese

think I'm repeating myself here as I've written about this cheese before. It's just that good.. and a chunk of it is now in our fridge. Hadn't planned on eating any, but I just might do so late at night ...

A new development is fake old cheese, that's cheese which has been ripened superfast and tastes as if it is old cheese, but in reality has only had half the ripening time of old cheese. Once again that brings the price down a LOT. The brand that started this first is called Old Amsterdam.
