I like the recording recommendations. The Four Seasons in particular have been recorded umpteen zillion times and there is a variety of quality out there.

On the classical music side I got my wife tickets to the Nashville Symphony this Saturday night to see Rachmonioff Greatest Hits. Not quite sure what Greatest Hits mean, but should be really good. They built a new Symphony Center here so we are really excited to see it and hear what a great hall should sound like.
While at the cabin I read "The Road". Its a book that you should check out and add to your book discussion. It was amazing. I read the whole thing in like 4 sittings.

As I posted in your log, I'll be interested to see what your thoughts are on the 300 workout.
Yup, if you like your orchestras large and the music emotional, Rachmaninov would be a good choice. I'm guessing the 2nd or 3rd Piano Concerto, his Paganini Variations, 2nd Symphony and/or Vocalise will be on the program.
I'll look up your recommendation when I get home tonight.

Indeed - and it's a pity that the other concertos aren't as popular. The other named ones (Tempesta di Mare and Piacere (I think)) are very good in their own right, as is the rest of the collection. That said, it'd be more likely for me to listen to a concerto or two, then switch to another disc - though I have been known to listen to the entire two disc set in one sitting.

Tom here is the description from the Symphony's website.
Nashville Symphony
Grant Llewellyn, conductor
Gabriela Montero, piano
Shostakovich - Festive Overture, Op. 96
Rachmaninoff - Concerto for Piano No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18
Michael Torke - Jasper
Roy Harris - Symphony No. 3 in One Movement
Shostakovich's triumphant overture christened our new hall in September 2006. Here it ushers in Rachmaninoff as Gabriela Montero guides us through the 20th century's most popular piano concerto.
It should be good. The Nashville Symphony won 3 Grammy's this year for their recording of "Made in America"

Cool lineup - I thought a Rachmaninov Greatest Hits would be an all Rach program. #2 of course is a fine choice (though many might be more familiar with #3, made famous in the movie Shine). I have a recording of Jasper - I like Torke's work a lot as it's typically modern and upbeat. I've heard of Harris but not heard his work, together with the Shosty it should be a fine program - please report back.

Hey TOm, I have a question. Or, I want your opinion rather. My friend is getting married this summer. She can only afford a violin/viola duo unfortunately. What do you recommend for the processional? I downloaded Pachelbel's Canon (which I had at my wedding and still love it)for her but I am wondering if you know of anything else suitable for only 2 stringed intruments that is less predictable?

just sticking my nose in - but the Trumpet Voluntary can be done with strings - maybe too traditional/predictable still for you? (e.g. Charles & Di)

Hmm LESS predictable... Guessing you'd not want Wagner's Wedding March (aka Here Comes the Bride)? Were you looking for something upbeat/fairly quick/celebratory, or something a bit slower/more sedate/profound?

I was wondering about that myself. It seems like a very diverse line up, which should make for a nice night. I will let you know how it goes. I think I may need to listen to a few pieces of these before I go.

Hey Tom! Just popping in to say hi. Your most recent workouts are extremely impressive. How did you fare with the eats this weekend? I was middling to good, all things considered. My mom is such a good cook, and bakes "healthy" treats just for me, bless her, and I just can't refuse. It would be too mean. So what's a gal to do except for eat the specially baked delicious blueberry bran muffins fresh out of the oven with a smear of hot butter?

Well it wasn't as bad it could've been, but it wasn't as good as it could've been either. Still, a holiday weekend will do that. Weight is up but I'm not really concerned as I'll try to taper off calories this week. Thanks for asking.

I know Naxos has a good recording of Jasper (that's the one I have). The Hyperion set of Rach Concerti (Stephen Hough is the pianist) is also good. The Shosty and Harris I'm not familiar with but I'd not be surprised if Naxos' American Classics series had a recording of the latter.
I find that I prefer listening to works before I hear them in the concert hall. While it's nice to be surprised, I find I get more out of the work if I'm already familiar with it somewhat.

You'll get these as I think of them... I'm not sure how good of a processional it would be, but it's a fine piece of music, and originally scored for violin and piano - Elgar's Salut d'Amour.

Yesterday's workout was the circuit training class that I had first taken the week before. A good workout, and it's good to know I have another option in case my usual workout times are taken up with meetings.

Looking Ahead
I think I'm going to at the very least be altering my workouts to take into account my bum left shoulder. (Have a call in to Tim to see how I should accomplish that.) I tried doing regular pushups in the circuit training class yesterday but they just were not happening. Saw my doctor this morning and got a script for an x-ray of the left shoulder to see what's going on, which I hope to do by/at the end of the week.
