Well they are different, and look pretty cool when you lift 'em. I'd been thinking about getting some for a while now but that experience has moved them up in the queue a bit.

As a side note, I'd mentioned turkish get ups to Tim and he showed me how to do them. I tried with the KB but failed. Even with a 12 or 15 lb dumbbell the exercise was plenty hard. I'd not be surprised if I see them in one of my training sessions/workouts.

Gotcha. Just saw somewhere that you had an Ipod along with you.

My husband laughs at me because I call these "Texas Gitty ups." I find them much easier to do, with that name.

I do generally, moreso now that I've figured out why my downloaded podcasts were disappearing. (That was one of yesterday's tasks.) If I wear headphones at all in the gym it's to do intervals, but even then I don't really listen as I am concentrating doing the working portion of the interval, or preparing to do so.

What do you listen to inside/outside the gym?

Default Modified 300 Workout 3

Rests variable as needed - finish in as few sets/rests as possible.

A: 25 Pull Ups (Barbell Grip) 1x20@-250, 1x5@-250

B: 50 Suitcase Deadlifts 1x40@40, 1x10@40

C: 50 Push Ups 1x30@BW, 1x20@BW

D: 50 Step Ups 1x40@BW, 1x10@BW (alternating sets)

E: 50 Floorwipers 1x15 each side, 1x10 each side

F: 50 Clean/Press 1x40@20, 1x10@20 (alternating sets)

G: 25 Pull Ups (Barbell Grip) 1x15@-250, 1x10@-250

Time: 34.42 (according to my Ipod stopwatch)

A, G Pull Ups:- Ddin't do too badly here - added 5 reps to the first set in A. G is the same. I think form was better on both exercises.

B Suitcase Deadlifts - More legs this time and a little slower to keep an eye on form. I have to be more careful about GM'nig out of the hole.

C Push Ups: Better form and only 2 sets this time. Yay.

D Step Ups: Improvement by 5 on the first set again, which makes the 2nd set psychologically easier. If I can get to 50 on each leg in one go, then I'll add a riser.

E Floorwipers: Tried for a larger range of motion but nearly toppled over - still I think I did better this time out.

F Clean/Press: 40 on the first set puts me in striking distance of 50 sometime soon.

Overall: I'm happy with my time, even though I had to move my step up bench because someone (uncharacteristically) wanted to use the cable machine. And I did some exercises a bit slower to make sure the form was acceptable. Still it proves the first time wasn't a fluke, which I'm happy about.

Hi Tom,

Workout is going well huh? That looks like one killer routine. I looked up the Turkish Get Ups, those look brutal as well! Who thinks of these exercises?

Nice job.

Thanks Deb - I think Tim thinks it's going a little too well. He wants us to do this workout again on Wednesday, so he can see if we need to up the weights on the weight bearing exercises.

What do you listen to inside/outside the gym?
An odd variety, according to some:
(promise not to judge or make fun?)

In the car:
soundtrack to Amadeus
soundtrack to Les Miserables
Dolly Parton's Greatest Hits
Sugarland
Garth Brooks
Cher's Greatest Hits

On my mp3 player:
all mixes
a few are arranged according to the length of interval (playlists titled Speed 1, speed 2, or speed 3).
a few others are just favorite songs and artists
A variety, though a lot of it stems from collegiate rowing, where music played a HUGE role in my team's workouts. Artists include:
Tina Turner
Dexy's Midnight Runner
Night Ranger (should I be embarrassed yet?)
Dave Matthews Band
Beastie Boys
Cher
Alabama
Grateful Dead
Heart
Michael Jackson
Gretchen Wilson...
anyway, you get the drift; lots of stuff, and none of it is "cool."

I should also add that I currently have downloaded on my lap top, "HIP HOP U.S. History." My students love it, and keep asking me if I listen to it when I work out. Thus far... no.

Also, I don't listen to music when I lift. Sensory overload. I only listen during intervals, and it's usually to tune out the gym's music more than anything else.

If that's what gets you going, then more power to ya. Most of my listening goes to older music, like classical or ethnic, which probably wouldn't be known outside of their respective circles. Yes, Beethoven, Bach, Mahler and Mozart are present, but so are Rouse, Hanson, Piston and Gibbons (speaking of classical). Ethnic music-wise, Alasdair Fraser, Natalie Haas, Margareth Menezes, Faun, Queen Ida, Wild Magnolias and Afro-Celt Sound System all have a place on my Ipod. Singer-songwriters also get a place - Lyle Lovett, Tom Waits, Kate Rusby, and Loudon Wainwright III can be found there too. There's others, but I think get the idea.

Definitely get your drift, though I've not heard of many of those folk. I'll have to check some of them out.

My preference in music has always been shaped by my experience. Grateful Dead and Dolly Parton were the only two tapes my dad had when we drove / moved from Boston to Seattle. I was 9, and we listened to those tapes for 2 weeks straight; I've loved them ever since. I played the violin for 20 years, and that spurred my love for classical music and opera, though these days I usually only listen to these when I'm alone or with my grandparents. Cher and Tina Turner are both incredibly strong women whom I've always admired. And the rest-- a random assortment of friends' influences and athletic pursuits.

I can't listen to music and do much else, though. I can listen and drive, and that's about it. Never understood people who can listen to music and read at the same time, for example-- are they really getting the full benefit of either?

Hi Tom, sorry I forgot to tell you how I hurt my foot. Two years ago I did the Vancouver Marathon and during training i got a severe case of plantar fasciitis. After getting orthotics, and really cutting down on the running I thought it had subsided. For some reason a couple weeks ago it really flared up. And rather than continue running and ignoring it (like I used to do) I decided to cut it out for a few weeks to hopefully heal. It is really painful and frustrating.
Enough about me...you really shaved off some serious time in the last few workouts. I definately see TGU's in your future!

Thank you tom, you just reminded me of some really good music I heard on the local NPR station that I wanted to look into.

If it's the fiddle you were playing, give a listen to Alasdair Fraser. To give you an idea of the type of guy/artist he is, he was playing at a music festival in Bethlehem PA. While he was performing, he spotted a young couple all but dancing in their seats (he plays traditional Celtic music). After a few minutes of this, he said, "If I were you, I'd be dancing too." So he asked them to come up on stage where he played a song just for them for the dancing.

To put Dolly Parton and Celtic music together - she does a cameo on Altan's Blue Idol CD which is absolutely amazing. Altan's lead singer (and fine fiddle player in her own right) Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh has the voice of an angel too - she and Dolly did a duet on song The Pretty Young Girl. Ní Mhaonaigh sings the Gaelic version of the song later on the CD.

Sorry to hear your injury's flared up again. I know that's a frustrating thing to have happen. I'll keep fingers crossed that you get better soon.

As for TGU's I'd not put it past Tim to throw them into a workout. That's one thing I like about having Tim as my trainer - whatever he has for me is always different and always challenging.
