I'm reading through the Diabetes Solution of dr. Bernstein and he mentions just like it is also explained in other books, that alcohol takes priority over every other food item you eat. The liver immmediately starts to detoxify the alcohol and every other metabolic process is halted. For anyone on a low-carb diet this means that if that person is dependent on gluconeogenesis = make glucose out of protein, there is a scarcity of glucose in the body and you will get a hypo when drinking too much hard liquor without the carbs.
So it's not just that you have less glycogen = less body water = being drunk more easily, but also the complete stop of gluconeogenesis. Probably also stops the production of ketones. But I forgot where the ketones are made. If in the liver, then you're lacking both ketones and glucose for energy.
I'd actually either abstain completely from anything alcoholic when in a ketodiet, go for very minute amounts or just save the alcohol for a day when you want to splurge.

That explains it.
Thanks Espi for the explanation of what effect alchohol has on you when you're on a low-carb diet. One just doesn't realize the science behind these diets and what happens to your body in general; i.e., when you drink alchohol.
Very interesting.

bad wine is great. It makes you happy.
I like to drink red wine. This girl says "Doesn't red wine give you a headache?" "Yeah, eventually! But the first and the middle part are amazing." I'm not gonna stop doing something 'cause of what's gonna happen at the end. "Mitch, you want an apple?" "No, eventually it'll be a core."

Thanks Espi - well researched as always. I mentioned the fact (to my spinning instructor) that I started a low-carb diet and she seemed concerned for my energy levels for class and my lifting. She feels I'd need some carbs pre/post workout so as to perform well, but I've no idea if that's right or not. Any ideas?

Spinning
Jump class today - boring for me, but a good workout nonetheless. I think I'm still transitioning energy systems because I don't think I performed at optimum today. Will see how things go next week.

There's a certain amount of energy you can derive from fats and ketones too, when you've shifted to very low-carb diet. The net result will become that where you would have used carbs for energy in the past for things like lifting and spinning sessions, you will now be able to use more fats.
However there's a limit to it. As long as your glycogen is still not depleted you won't notice as much. When you are depleted you'll noticed to hit a wall when doing a spinning class. Even a small amount of carbs will help.
I just remember that back in the days I did a ketodiet, I still did two weekly spinning sessions, but after about 6-8 weeks I added in approx. 25g of carbs. I felt as if I was given rocket fuel. Mind you, I could still participate, but I just became slower.
Since TNT isn't an actual ketodiet I don't really expect that many problems even in the first part of it, but you'd do wise to eat more carbs both before and after a workout, within the limits of what's allowed to eat.

I did the first four weeks on TNT (Plan A) and had little problems with cardio. I even ran 10k once. No extra carbs. I'm sure I would have been a bit faster with some carbs, but I'm not competing, I'm trying to lose fat. So, I'll take slow.
Personally, I would avoid the carbs during the break in period and just suffer through slower spinning. After the four weeks, add a bit in around the workout if you really want to.

Tom. If you've never done a low-carb diet before, the first week or two will be tough. Once you get through that break-in period, you should get a lot more energy. I did FL1 and FL2 on low carb diets, including lots of intervals. Just give it a little more time before making any changes. I bet you'll be feeling great by next week when you start your hypertrophy program.
Hey, have you lost much weight yet?

Since starting the low carb diet? I'm not sure since my weight tends to go all over the place... But will step on the scale today to see.

When I got weighed in last week, (before I started the low-carb diet), I was 241. I stepped on the scale today at 234. Now, I've not been strength training since I finished Fat Loss III, and I know low carb diets have a diuretic component, so I think those have a lot to do with the numbers. I'm not so concerned as what the numbers are, so long as the trend continues downward.

Yes, with low carb diets you lose a lot of water and muscle glycogen in the beginning you will have a pretty drastic weight loss. The long term trend will tell. Congrats on your initial success though! Keep up the good work!

Thanks Jill and Paula,
Yeah, I'm pretty optimistic that the right lower back and left bicep will heal to the point of not being an issue for Hypertrophy I on Monday. As for happy hour today, I'm going to stick to diet soda I think, because I REALLY want to see what kind of results I can get. (Read: I'm sick and tired of being in the 230-240 range on the scale.)

Good luck with the healing process. Be careful on Monday, my friend.
