Budding triathlete
Well those that venture down to multi sport sub forum will know that I'm going to start training for a triathlon somewhere down the road.
Don't have one specifically in mind but for now its just fun.
Got bored lifting weights for the sake of lifting weights and need something to train for to give that extra motivation.
I'm strong (as strong as I have been) but un-conditioned.
After a quick look at a tri-training site linked by Fish or Eric I saw that the baseline values before you start specific tri training is
30min swim
30min run
40min ride
So at this stage thats what I'm focusing on.
Here's to the adventure.

Swam yesterday for the first time in many years.
500m in 11:16m. Did 50m then rest 10sec or so.
Suprisingly hard. Will either get aerobically fit very quickly or drown, whatever comes first.
Upper body was fried so will have to think about what specific movements swimming uses and train for them in the gym.
Found out the pool is free if you belong to my gym and got the opening hours so its full steam ahead.
This is fun.

Ran this morning. Using a interval based program that I used on a client last year.
Ran for 3min, walked for 2min. Makes 5min set.
5 sets which was 25min then walk cooldown.
Heart rate using my polar was 161bmp which is 81% of age predicted max.

Going for more unilateral weights work for a few weeks to fix any issues.
Workout took about 20min today which was good as I'm studying for a final exam on saturday.
One arm db bench press 2x12 with 20kg
one arm db row 2x12 with 25kg
static lunges 2x12 with 10kg each hand
pistols 3x2
medicine ball wood chops 1x20 with 6kg ball
60sec rest between sets and did them as straight sets.
Training my soccer team tonight so won't do anything else today.

Biked today on the exercise bike while listening to lectures. Multitasking.
16km in 30:30min at HR 144 which is 72%.
Legs alittle sore from gym yesterday but bike knocked that all out.
Going for improving volume and not intensity.
Really enjoying this so far. Great having Kevin, Fish and Eric around to gee me up. Thanks guys.

Jogged this morning using the 3min jog/ 2min walk cycle. 30min total.
Heart rate average 152 (76%)
No idea how far it was but found some pretty cool running/ bike tracks running almost the length of town.
Muscles were sore after a little bit so might try static stretching calves and TA as they are chronically tight.
Also checked out a bike shop and looks like for about $1000 i'll get a nice new road bike. Will save and get something more suited then just getting a mountain bike because of the price. Dare to dream.

Had yesterday off as I figured 5 days in a row is enough.
Went for a walk for an hour today with average HR of 122 (60%). Wasn't for training but listened to lectures and got some more activity in.
Got a bit of a head cold so the immune boosting benefits of low-moderate exercise was also what I was after.
Exam tomorrow then holidays. Then the real training starts.

Josh had you ever done any distance running before this. The reason I ask is that before I ran a couple of races last year (on a dare) I couldn't stand running. Now I am pretty addicted to racing (slowly and I still hate training) and it is intresting to see how non runners get started and progress. Most of the folks in the runners forum are mutants (he says with respect) and seem to run all distances with speed and ease. They are all good guys though and can offer great advice. Good Luck with your training.

Good luck with the training! I've done a couple of triathlons, and love them. It's the swim that's the hardest for me.

Josh,
I'll be back on the JPForums with a little more regularity now, so I will check on your progress. I've looked up the half Ironman you mentioned (in Yeppoon) - looks good. A HIM will pronbably be my next tri, but won't be ready for August I'm afraid. I might consider it in 2008 however. Would like to do the full Ironman distance again though - maybe next year again.
I agree with most of the other people recommending to hold out and get a bike that is suited more to your needs rather than purely budget - easy for me to say, I'm not a student!
The hybrid jog/walk workouts are probably good for you if you haven't a big history with running. Most beginners recover better, while not having such a big detrimental effect on improving their endurance.
Anyway, I could ramble on for hours, and am guessing I will have plenty of opportunity to help where I can. Keep up the good work.
Kev
