Crashed and burned tonight. Lower back pinged at the end of the 3rd set so I had to quit -- I've got a hearing in the morning that I can't miss and can't take a chance.
So, I added a few curls just to make me feel like a did a little something extra.
Hopefully back tomorrow or Friday to try again.
I hope you did the curls in the squat rack - that makes them work better

Switched to front squats tonight as suggested by all my friends here. Had to dial back the weight, but they felt really good. Wrists hurt, but I know that will work itself out.
OHP -- added a little weight, lost a rep on the last 2 sets. Still progress, though.
Deads felt GREAT tonight. I had only planned to do 5 x 174 but felt like I could keep going and going. Had to make myself stop at 196. How awesome.
And, the youngest boy was out with me tonight. Doing pullups and chinups on the bar in the squat rack. Both my boys are really getting strong -- it makes me so proud. I only wish I hadn't wasted my youth watching the Three Stooges and eating ice cream...
The best thing for the wrists for me was stretching 'em in between every set... I rarely even have to do that now - I hardly notice them unless I do really high volume on my front squats.

Front Squats were super hard tonight. Had to keep switching between cross-over grips and bent-wrist grips (whatever the word is -- can't think of it right now). I tried stretching between sets, but still very painful. I need to work on finding a comfortable place to rest the bar -- these seem a lot harder now than they used to!
Added some weight to my bench, but couldn't finish the sets of five.
Sorry about the back, but IMHO, it's worse to do things that hurt you or lift heavier than you can safely lift, than to do it right. So you should be proud of doing it right, instead of macho posing just to say you lifted X pounds...
Tried something different this morning -- weight-carrying energy systems work. There was an article about it on T-Nation recently, and I see that it's something Roland does often, too.
So, this morning, 2 circuits of the following, with 90 sec rest in between. 100 steps for each movement.
Farmers walk with 35 lb plate each hand - carried in pinch grip
Bear hug walk - 70 lbs
Suitcase carry - 70 lbs (switched hands halfway through)
Sumo carry - 70 lbs
Overhead carry - 35 lbs

Should have been 3 circuits of these, but my forearms were wearing out.
Pretty fun stuff. Looking forward to more.
Thanks, y'all! It was fun -- and today, I'm sore in all kinds of new places, especially the outsides of my shoulders. (Interesting note: for the first time in memory, my shirts are tighter around my shoulders than my belly!!)
Today should also be a blast: I'm taking the family for a 3-mile "training" hike on Galveston beach as we prepare for a 14 mile hike this Fall in Big Bend. We've never done the long hike thing, so I'm hoping for the best!
The 3-mile beach trek was a success yesterday -- everyone was worn out (it was scorching), but we were all refreshed by a post-walk dip in the Gulf waters. A great morning.
Spent this afternoon moving 24 privacy fence panels from the front of our property to the back, loading them in and out of a pick-up. Also moved a truck-load of lumber. A great "total body" workout, and I'm whooped. I'll count that as my work for the day.

There's no training thats more functional that good ol' fashioned work.
The three stooges are an essential part of growing up male.
That's true, except I was growing up and growing out.

Agreed. Dan John's got a new article up at T-Nation (or whatever they're calling it these days) about changing up every 6 weeks, and also about the debate of whether to focus more on hypertrophy vs. strength as we get older. (At least that's what I took away after skimming it -- I'll need to go back and read it to be sure ...!)

Front squats feeling stronger, back is better, but I'm hesitantly progressing. It's gotten to the point that I'm almost scared doing them -- something's not right with that kind of attitude...
Bench press -- no progress here.
Got tired of doing inverted rows, so I subbed in some DB rows (more like lawnmower pulls). A nice change.

I would assume the right answer is to go for strength since supposedly after a certain age we start losing a % of muscle mass. Working out keeps us off the cane.

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
I think Dan was arguing since there is age-related muscle mass loss to throw in some hypertrophy routines to try and keep even with muscle mass.
Yes, thats exactly what he meant. He did an interview on IronRadio.org recently and thats what he said there as well. He had a chance to expound on it a bit more there.
