Working my way into Rippetoe's Starting Strength -- from what I can tell so far, he has squats as the main exercise in every workout, alternating other exercises throughout the week. I've just started reading his book, but it's great. I've already learned so much about what I was doing wrong with the squat -- from making a few changes, I can really feel a difference -- have better ROM, my back feels great, and my butt hurts. And that's a good thing, I think.

Depends - how long were you in the sauna?

yup - his novice program has you squatting every workout, 3x a week.
Fun.
Fun, indeed!
Actually, I'm kinda enjoying doing it each time -- if I could only be more consistent. I've learned so much from y'all about mobility and proper stretching -- now, I can actually do this stuff without it hurting (as much!). I've really grown to appreciate the importance of form and range of motion versus trying for heavy weights.
I'd like to deadlift more often, too, just because I can do sumos so much easier now. But, in time . . .
I think I've reached a cherry tomato saturation point.
Are you and Mrs. LJ up for some fresh Cherry Maters?

Can there really be a cherry mater saturation point??
Well, if there is, then we'd sure love to help alleviate your burden! Unfortunately, I won't be around to get them during the first part of this week -- can Mrs. LJ come get them, or maybe we all can meet up on Saturday?
We can meet up next Saturday. Right after I made the offer, bob alleviated me of some of my mater problem. But by next week, I'll be back up to speed I am sure Y'all want some Jalepenos too???

Jalapenos would be great, too! (My favorite receipe for those is to stuff 'em with cream cheese and wrap them in bacon -- have you tried 'em this way?)
Thanks so much -- hope we can get together next weekend then!

Abbreviated workout this morning b/c of a court hearing -- also, skipped the sumo DL's b/c I couldn't risk tweaking my back and being off my best today.

Got time for a tomato and jalepeno hookup this weekend? I'm gonna have both coming out my ears by day's end on Saturday.

Making progress on squats, bench is weak, weak, weak. Need to read more on form -- maybe that's the issue. My bench has an unusually wide stand, so may grip may be too wide...
Added back extensions -- was going to do 3 sets, but I was really feeling them, so stopped at 2.
On the rows, decided to do them bent knee today to make sure I was getting full ROM.
You mean Mogul???? or do you mean Mediterranean Cafe???

Hmm.. I think you said it was one on Bay Area. Med Cafe is on Nasa Rd 1, right? I've never been to Mogul . . .
We've been to one in a strip center that shares a parking lot with the new Half Price Books on Nasa Rd 1 -- had a real bad experience there, but I don't remember what the name was . . .

Thanks so much to you and HisChum for the fabulous conversation at lunch! It was good to see you again and meet your lovely wife

Well, it happened again (though seemingly not as bad). On the 4th rep of my last set of Sumos, my lower back went *pop* and hurt. Set the bar down and walked away. It started really hurting, but after a night of rest, ice, and heat, it's better this morning.
Needless to say, Mrs LJ (HisChum) is not happy. She thinks its silly to hurt yourself while trying to make yourself healthier. And, I agree.
I can only think I lost my concentration -- a family member walked in the garage as I was doing the last set, and I think my form broke.
I may spend the next workout or two doing single leg and body weight stuff till things get back to normal - hopefully, it will be quick.
Still reading through Starting Strength -- am a little discouraged that he doesn't really discuss front squats or sumo DL's because they don't work the same muscle groups as much. What about people like me with a history of back problems?
I think that's one reason my bench is so much stronger than my squats - I'm always much more afraid of hurting myself on squats, whereas I trust my spotter on bench (not that I can't still get hurt) and push harder...

Thanks, Bytsi --
Ironically, my bench (and overhead press) is my weakest lift. I've heard so much trash-talking of bro-benchers (light-hearted, I know) that I think I've subconciously avoided that lift altogether! I'd like to see it improve greatly, though.
I don't have a spotter, but I've set up my squat-rack so that the lower bars will act as a safety. Had to use it in my last bench workout when I couldn't make the last rep -- just set it down on the bars and "squoze" outta there!

He discusses them as useful accessory lifts... look in that section of the book.

Took things easy tonight b/c of last week's back strain -- everything felt good.
Best part about tonight: BOTH boys joined me!! They're doing great -- really paying attention to form, too. They're deadlifting and squatting -- too cool!!
Cool! How old are your boys again? I loved it when my son went with me to the gym. Now he's a teenager and needs his sleep more, apparently.
They're 8 and 12 -- they haven't quite succumbed to the testosterone poisoning that is teenage-boyhood!
We went to a local sporting goods store that has a lot of free weight stuff to ask about getting a shorter Oly bar for my oldest son. The guy had one -- it was 35 lbs and $160! I told him we had been using an EZ curl bar for his squats and deads, and he said that it would actually be safer to stick with the EZ curl bar and drop money on a shorter Oly bar later. I appreciated his honesty!
My oldest son just got a username here -- "LJ Jr." He plans on starting a training log, too - I look forward to seeing what he has to say! (Scratching head thoughtfully, wondering if forum rules allow a 12 year old to have a training log?)
He doesn't log that he danced with me for hours. I was exausted and had to rest but he went strait on to working on building me a milking stand for our cow.
