Bill,
Looking good. The SGDLs are a challenge, especially with the bar those few inches closer to the floor. Don't take chances with your back.

Your workouts are looking great. I am personally starting to appreciate the lower body Russian twist. Concentrate on keeping the shoulders/upper back pinned to the floor and keeping the legs straight. They feel so good . . . when you're done with them.

BTW - you will appreciate this. This morning's music - Handel: Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno.

Yessir. Duly noted!

If they challenge the mighty Mahler, then I guess I don't feel so bad. The lower body ones are a PITA at the gym, since they require a lot of room.

Wow. Handel's first oratorio isn't something most people encounter! Do you listen to your collection in order? Start with Trionfo and work your way all the way through, perhaps one a day? That could take a while!

Yikes, I've created a monster.

I was struck by the doofus disease. Last time I had 5 lbs and I didn't pay attention to last week's log and thought it said 15. Oops. (Rob, it's spreading! If I start exhibiting more symptoms, like singing tunes from Annie, just shoot me... )
This sort of thing (doofus, not Annie) is only supposed to hit in your 40s, Bill. Guess you're ahead of the pack.

NROL, FL-2 B, 3 x 12, 60" rest

Mobility as usual. And just so Rob won't feel so alone, I added fire hydrants to the routine. Happy now?

Core stability: Felt good. I screwed up the front plank timing: I didn't realize I had my watch on timer mode instead of stopwatch. So I hit the "start" button and my watch started beeping after 35 seconds (my birddog time). So I reset it, put it on stopwatch, and then went 2'20" before collapsing. So I think altogether I was pretty close to 3 minutes.

Back extension hold, 2'. R and L side planks, 1'30".

A1) Snatch grip deadlift: 3 x 95 x 12
Between the wide grip and the small weight (those 25s put the bar really close to the ground!) I don't think I kept form very well for the final reps. Something to work on next time.

A2) T pushup, 3 x BW x 12

B1) Bulgarian torture: BW x 12, 2 x 10+10 x 12
The joy returns...

B2) Underhand grip lat pull, 140 x 12, 2 x 160 x 12

C1) RDL + BO Row: 3 x 45 (bar) x 12
This was relatively easy but I was working in with some guy doing BB curls with the empty bar and didn't feel like messing with adding/removing 5 lb plates. Yeah, I'm lazy.

C2) LB Russian twists: 3 x BW x 12
After all the other ab work... geez, these were hard.
If you really want to feel bad, go to Galya's log and watch her doing Bulgarian Deadlifts.

Not sure I'm really "ahead" since I'm 41. Does it go away in your 50s?

September 29, 2007

Ate crappy food yesterday at the race track, then got a late start since I was out late last night. I woke up around 7:00 and lay in bed hoping I'd fall asleep because I really, really needed more sleep. I thought training partners were supposed to be a good influence... Finally dragged myself out of bed at 8:00. I totally expected this workout to really suck, but I managed to get through it.

Mobility and all that stuff.

Core stability: 2 circuits of front plank, each side plank, and back extension hold for 60" each. No rest between each beyond changing positions or walking back to the back extension.

NROL FL 2 B

A1) Snatch grip DL: 3 x 115 x 12
Set the bar up on a step plus 45 lb plate. Much, much better.

A2) T Pushup: 3 x BW x 12

B1) Bulgarian torture: 3 x 10+10 x 12

B2) Underhand lat pull: 1 x 160 x 12, 2 x 170 x 12

C1) RDL + Bent over row: 3 x 55 x 12

C2) Lower body Russian twist: 3 x bw x 12
These really wiped me out. After the second set, I took some more rest time before doing C1. After the final set I just lay on the floor for a few minutes, kinda dazed and confused. I need sleep...

Rested up now!

Backyard BW blast

Three rounds for time.

10 Burpees
20 Med ball slams
30 Jumping jacks
15 Pushups
20 SL hip extension (10 each leg)

First round didn't seem too bad. Hey, I can do this in 15! Round 2 started getting tough, took longer rests, and I tried to limit them to no more than one minute. I stepped up round three and managed a total time of 21'36".

Now it's time to plant my tail in front of the TV for the race!

Cool workout, Bill. Is that of your own design?

Thanks, Victoria!

It's sorta-kinda my own design. Most of the elements are from Ross and a few other things that I know I need to do (the hip extensions). I'll rearrange one of his workouts and sub what I can do for things that I can't (like pullups for reps).

You should try a crossfit style jumping pullup. Since you use some leg drive, you can get plenty of reps in. I've been doing some lately, and they'll really kick you in the ass (but in a good way).
