Nice workout. What do you think of the supine hip ext w/ leg curls? In pictures they look really quite easy, but difficult to due -- they really do hit the hamstrings pretty good.

They aren't easy, but I've done them for a while so I guess I sorta have the hang of them. One time when I first tried them I lost control of the ball, which went bouncing off across the gym. Oops. These days I manage to stay on it.

Workout 9: June 14, 2007
Same warmup and core.
A1) Lunge stance DB rows: 20 lbs x 15, 20 x 15
I think I can do more, but that jump from 20 to 25 is just a lot. I wish we had DBs in 2.5 pound increments.
A2) Step ups, one DB: 20 x 15, 20 x 15
B1) Pushup holds: 22" each position x 2 (+ 2 seconds)
B2) Lateral DB Deadlifts: 20 x 15, 20 x 15
I feel like I've finally got the place where I'm keeping my back in the right position for all 15 reps.
C1) Face Pull: 40 x 15, 40 x 15
C2) Rope triceps Ext: 40 x 15, 40 x 15
(Sort of... last set I got worn out by 12, rested about 10-15 seconds and did the last three. My left arm could easily do more, but the right doesn't have as much strength or endurance at this point.)
Tomorrow night is my sister's birthday party, with my niece doing the cooking. I have no idea what kind of menu she's planned. Let's hope it's reasonably healthy.

I agree fully with this one, ours go up in 2.5 kg - I wish they did 1.25

Thanks, Newman. I admit I think I set the bar pretty high on my 61DC nutritional goal, so now I'm worried about running out of one-point days soon, then I'll have none left for July!
Interesting twist on the birthday dinner... my sister wasn't too happy about my niece inviting lots of people to the house without telling her beforehand. Teenagers, of course, tend to think of it as "our house" and not "Mom and Dad's house", and of course when Mom and Dad re-assert their homeowner authority, they're just being SO unreasonable! My mom decided to rescue the occasion by inviting everyone to my folks' house and ordering pizza to keep it simple.

Ah, so the grass isn't any greener on the other side of the pond.
Tell you what, Neil -- by next Summit, we'll both be using those huge DBs and we can have a good laugh about wishing for small increments over breakfast at Waffle House.

Workout 10: June 16, 2007
Warmup and core. Increased the alternating leg lifts to 15 reps first set, 11 second. Managed first rep side planks of 65" R, 1'15"L, and 60" both sides second set.
A1) Seated Row w/ V handle: 100 x 15, 100 x 15
Too easy. These are going up next time.
A2) Split Squat: 20+20 x 15, 20+20 x 15 (+5 each hand, 10 overall)
I was ready for a challenge this morning, and this was it. My legs are still tired.
B1) Kneeling cable press: 40 x 15, 40 x 15 (+10)
Hmmm... I think I did in my knees with the split squats. I couldn't kneel comfortably; my left patella wouldn't get in the right position. Had to walk it off a bit, and even still had to get a pad from the warmup area and kneel on it.
B2) Supine hip ext w/ leg curl: 15, 15
I think I need to start thinking about how to weight these, it that's possible.
C1) Lunge stance pulldown: 50 x 15, 60 x 15 (+10 second set)
C2) Scap plane lateral raise, NG: 10+10 x 15, 12+12 x 15 (+2 each hand, 4 total)
Not too shabby. It felt good to take the weight up. Later on it might not feel so good when the soreness sets in...
I also stopped at the farmers' market on the way to the gym this morning. Got some fresh tomatoes (imported from Arkansas), local zucchini and raspberries. I love getting fresh stuff!!! It makes clean eating a LOT more fun!

Nice workout, especially the side planks -- I find them very difficult.
The fresh fruit and veggies sound delicious! I can't wait till we start to see some of that way up north here is WI.

Thanks, Michael and Lance.
Lance - yeah, side planks aren't exactly my favorite. It takes a while for the time to increase. But I know I gotta do it.

Okay, resuscitating this log from page three, once again!
Last night (Tuesday) I went to the gym as usual and couldn't even get into the parking lot. There was one handicapped space open (can't use that), and one space where some idiot parked their minivan across the line so I couldn't fit into it. I was so ticked off I just went to the grocery store and went home.
So tonight I had to make up Tuesday's workout. I didn't feel like it, but I drove to the gym anyway instead of going home from work. Turns out it wasn't too bad.
Workout 11: June 20, 2007
Warmup and core as usual. I wasn't able to add any more time to the side planks. Hmph.
A1) Lunge stance DB rows: 20 x 15, 20 x 15
A2) Step ups, one DB: 20 x 15, 20 x 15
I'm definitely taking these both up to 25 next time.
B1) Pushup holds: 22 seconds each position x 2
Didn't seem so bad last time. Tonight it felt bloody near impossible.
B2) Lateral DB deadlifts: 20 x 15, 20 x 15 (each side)
C1) Face pull: 50 x 15, 50 x 15 (+10)
C2) Rope triceps ext: 50 x 15, 40 x 15
(first set +10, almost didn't make it. I knew there was no way to repeat that so I took it down 10 for the second set).

I hear you about an exercise one time feeling not too bad, then the next it seeming impossible -- with the same weight! I suppose it could be for various reasons - mental, nutritional, physical... Way to work through it.

Thanks, Lance!
Whoa... I'm still on page one! Guess that means I'm popular.
Workout 12: June 21, 2007
Warmup and core.
A1) Seated row w/ V handle: 115 x 15, 115 x 15 (+15)
A2) Split squat: 20+20 x 15, 20+20 x 15
I swear these just never get any easier... It didn't help that some nimrod doing lateral raises decided to move halfway through his set and was less than a foot in front of me.
B1) Kneeling cable press: 40 x 15, 30 x 15
Left knee really hurt in a kneeling stance and I couldn't put weight on it. I changed to standing, and lowered the weight for the second set since I was much more unstable standing up. Time to fire off an email to Danny.
B2) Supine hip ext w/ leg curl: 15, 15 (bw)
C1) Lunge stance pulldown: 60 x 15, 60 x 15 (+10)
C2) Scap plane lateral raise, NG: 12 x 15, 12 x 15
I think I'm at the end of break-in, but I'll have to check to be certain. Saturday, instead of hitting the gym early, I'll be participating in the UMDF Walk/5K as my 61DC competetive goal. The walk won't be much of a challenge at all, but I managed to exceed my fund-raising goal.

Do them single-legged or ask Danny for a new lift.
And I always put a pad or folded gym towel under my knee in a kneeling lift. It's just more comfortable for the patella. I doubt there's anything really wrong with your knee if this is the only time it bugs you.

Thanks, Lisa! You're always so full of helpful advice. I like that single-legged idea, especially after the discussion here (starting at post # 59).
The knee thing is ongoing. Once my patella gets into the wrong spot, it takes a while for it to work itself back to normal. I usually use a pad for the kneeling presses, but maybe a towel, with the added thickness, will help. I'll give it a try next time.

I have a similar knee issue, Bill... I have to use a thick gym mat to do anything that makes me bear weight on my left patella. That makes it completely bearable, and usually it's not even uncomfortable. Have you tried one of the super thick gym mats?
