So the only way to prove it is to win in a head to head competition.
For the third straight year, the summit has brought some added motivation. How long that motivation lasts, I have no idea, but I sure hope as hell that it goes a long way.
I'll be doing FL 1 too. Although I think I am about a week behind. And then if it goes to FL 2 and then FL 3, so be it. Whatever it takes for me to look decent shirtless.
We need parameters though. Any ideas?
Tuesday, April 17
Superset 1
Front Squats
3x15 @ 115
Cable Seated Row
3x15 @ 150
I think it's slightly disturbing that I'm rowing more than I'm squatting at this point. Probably because I haven't squatted in a long time and I am absolutely worthless when it comes to front squats, and I am sure that I am still not "Hartman-approved" for back squatting. So front squats it is.
Superset 2
Pushups
3x15
Single Leg Air Humps
3x15
This was supposed to be the push press/supine hip extension superset. Again, I'm not "Hartman approved" for overhead pressing, and for some stupid reason, the University of Missouri student recreation center has only two swiss balls in the whole complex. So of course, they were checked out. I can say though that it was no less of a workout. My ass was shaking like Shakira on the last reps.
Superset 3
Rotational Lunges
3x16 (8 each side) @ 45
Crunches
3x15 @ 25
The crunches, obviously, had to be done on an ab mat and not a swiss ball like they were supposed to.
I think this workout sufficiently kicked my rear end. And if I remember correctly, this is the easier of the two workouts in FL 1. When I went to get in my car, I tried to sit, and essentially just plopped. I am freaking tired.
Thursday is going to be fun.

Good question LD, key is nutrition which can be a challenge considering your location and your schedule. Seems like there have been articles about good nutrition while in school. May have to do a search.
Only fair way is to compare amount of bodyfat lost. Get your % calculated and compare the amount of fat lbs lost. Best way to compare guy vs. gal IMO.
Good luck to both! (Does she know you're stalking her? )

It's going to be something basic that almost everyone follows. Complex carbs, no junk food, lots of protein, etc.
My diet isn't great. But it's better than it was. I respond much better to low carb diets than anything else. (wait, probably "good carb") so I think that will be it.
For example, today was a metabolic drive shake this morning (I got it for free at the summit, that's some good stuff) and then a big protein shake after my workout for lunch. Now I realize that's probably not too good because I haven't had any real food today. And dinner tonight... no idea. I have to go to football and then write, so it will be whatever the roommates' have leftover at about 7:30.
I could keep going but I should probably actually get going to football practice.

no, she doesn't. and i hope that she never finds out. that would not be very good at all. do you think she checks the training log section? I hope not.

I've had luck with simple carbs (gatorade + whey) around workout time (pre/during/post) then nothing but veggies throughout the rest of the day. No grains. I've tried sticking to whole grains and don't seem to lose any fat that way. I have trouble keeping them right around my workouts so I cut them all together. My macros end up being close to the G.S. Diet - 30-35% Pro; 10-15% Carb; 55-60% Fat.
Give it a try for a couple weeks and see how you progress then re-evaluate, my advice.

alright. I'm going to come clean.
I am not a vegetable person. I'm better than I was. I eat veggies on sandwiches, etc. I can handle some. But...... not where I should be. I used to absolutely not touch them. Slowly, I'm weening myself onto them (it's been about a four year process) and I'm better than I used to be, but I still have a hard time with them.
I need to get better. And probably when I start eating them every day, I'll see the fat come off. I've just got to start eating them on a more regular basis.
and I hear you on the gatorade. Use that after every workout. I actually enjoy my shakes. taste like a poor man's orange julius. need to remember water thursday. I about died of thirst.

I'm not going to be able to sleep now that you've put that image in my mind.
Good luck. I'm currently trying to figure out just how to focus my Summit motivation as well.

Bill- proud to do that for you. I was motivated last year, but then quickly fell off the bandwagon and got back into the "what do I want to do" dilemma. This year, I think the added incentive of not getting my ass kicked is going to help a lot.
OG- uhhh..... that's affirmative. My goal is to just keep it close. She's much more of a badass than I am. And if I win? I get to rub it in like crazy.

Once I find something to measure with, I will do so. I have no idea where the hell my tape measure is. (oooooo..... i can use the one in our tool kit. awkward, but it will work.)

I'll give you the advice I received from Craig Ballantyne a couple years ago on the veggies - butter and salt. Use real butter, it's better for you and helps to get your fat amounts up (see Galya for more detailed explanation). I use frozed veggies and I got some 1-cup glass containers to microwave them. Add some salt and enjoy. Start off with stuff you like - corn, peas/carrots, whatever. Then expand on a regular basis to try others - broccoli, asparagus, etc. Consider your diet a work in progress and continually try to clean it up by tweaking it constantly.
This past weekend my parents were up and they were blown away with the fact that I made an omelette and had a side of green beans. Growing up, I never, never ate vegetables. Corn and occasionally peas. Never even ate a salad until after college. Even they, I just drenched it in ranch dressing. So I know what it's like. Trust me, it's a change for the better.

A couple of tastier and easy ways to get the vegetables down would be V8 juice and soups. A 12 oz of V8 in the morning is good for a couple of veggie servings. Toss in a cup of frozen veggies into any canned soups and you get 2 more. The canned soups now come Fat Free, Reduced carbs or sodium just about any nutritional goal you are aiming for.

Not a veggie eater either, Nick, but try doing what Ted says. I've been doing that and it does get you started on it. In fact I find myself using less butter these days. And for salt I've been using garlic salt, adds a different flavor.

That sounds like it could make it tolerable. I think I'm going to go buy some next time I am grocery shopping.
I think we even have some here, I will cook some tonight (depending on what we're eating. I need to start being the one that makes the food choices)
I had another MD shake again this morning, this time with milk. damn that stuff is tasty. Problem is though, I will have a sandwich (on whole wheat) when I get home, and then dinner. I think today, I am looking at my calories being at about 2000 or less, depending on dinner. For me that's pretty damn low, because I've seen calculations that tell me I need approx. 3000 a day to maintain.
What I think gets me are the days that I just absolutely gorge. And I don't mean the summit, because I planned for that to be four days of bad (or great, depending how you look at it) eating. I'm good for about four days a week, and then there's three days when I'm terrible. Or I will eat well for most of the day, then eat terribly at dinner or something. If I can condense all of that cheating to one day, then I think I will finally see some decent progress. It's all about willpower. I've got to use it this time. And when I go home, I eat terribly too. Something about candy and cookies just laying around that makes me want to splurge. (next weekend is going to be an absolute bitch. I'll be at the track all weekend, and if they serve the taquitos, all bets are off. Those are absolutely addicting).
I'm going to do this. I'm not fat, but I want to be lean. This is actually going to happen. (and if I want motivation, I can watch that video of me from the summit in Lou's chair. You can see my belly sticking out)

I'm going to try. Even if I have to hold my nose.
Thanks, Gobbla, I think. Though I don't think we're going to go with total pounds lost. If we did, I could win in a week. I have much further to go than she does.

That's the one problem that I have with being able to eat anything. You start with one taquito, hoping to limit the number and it sends you off on a binge of taquitos.
I've had better luck with low carb diets, simply because I don't eat any foods that make me crave more foods.
Regarding the vegetables, if you put yourself into a caloric deficit large enough to reach your goal, then you will be so hungry that vegetables will suddenly be delicious. I don't care how veggie-adverse a person is, if they are eating about 1000 calories below maintenance for over a week and depriving themselves of junk food, suddenly that stalk of broccoli starts looking like an ice cream cone.
Hell, my mouth started watering yesterday at the smell of dog food when I was feeding my dogs. Sick, but true.
If dogfood is making your mouth water, it may be time for a re-feed there Doc!

Can you explain? The margarine I buy is made with no trans fats and with Canola oil which is better for you than olive oil. Most of the marg at the grocery stores I go to, are made with no trans fats now.
