Default Oh - is this why I've felt better since less water and more wine

Passed on to me - have no idea regarding originator

"To my friends who enjoy a glass of wine... and those who don't.

As Ben Franklin said: In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is freedom, in water there is bacteria. In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstrated that if we drink 1 liter of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. coli) - bacteria found in feces. In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop.

However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine & beer (or tequila, rum, whiskey or other liquor) because alcohol has to go through a purification process of boiling, filtering and/or fermenting.

Remember: Water = Poop,

Wine = Health

Therefore, it's better to drink wine and talk stupid, than to drink water and be full of shit .

There is no need to thank me for this valuable information: I'm doing it as a public service.

Ben also said that beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

Default strange syndrome/back to the gym

Starting Thursday a weakness in grip of both hands started. By Friday I was aware of having to concentrate to hold a cup of coffee. Had it been just one side I would have suspected stroke like problems. And lower intestinal problems all day. Fore arms started tingling. Yikes. Called doc, but never got a call back. Next day hands a little better, but tingling moved up to lower jaw. Very slight temp. I chose not to go to the gym either on Friday or Saturday. I otherwise felt OK, but just a bit off. My suspician at this point is some sort of spinal virus - not meningitus(hope and denial?), had it got more severe I would have gone to the emergency room. But I can imagine how that would have gone. SLOWLY.

By Sunday evening I felt mostly OK, so did the following:

6 shoulder exercises with cables
Standing Abs using cables

And six sets of circuits:
Alternating between 2 chins, or 2 pull ups
bench press with bar bell at 135, 2 reps
Deadlift at 185, 2 reps

They all went OK, but this limited workout was enough

HIIT Sprints (my favorite)

3 trot, walk to warm up
4 sets (run one walk one), times actually were pretty good
3 to cool off

One mile total, but obviously was enough

Sauna

Thanks Roland - it is continuing to abate. It is and has been really subtle. Even at its worst it didn't jump out. However I knew that it was a significant symptom from Friday on. Anyway today our gardener comes, and that will motivate me to get the Dahlias planted. The friend who wants to get my Holly Orchard productive gave me another 30 tubers from his flower business. Some of the Alder trees I have been ignoring in the orchard are approaching 12 inches in diameter. And it is the time of year to spray black berries. We are not technically rain forest area, but awfully damm close. Things grow like Godzilla.

Heh heh. I remember that line from Frasier: "The state flower here is mildew."

I had a viral meningitis a few years ago and my symptoms weren't like yours -- it was mainly feeling weak and tired, and headaches like you wouldn't believe. It felt like someone was hitting my head with a hammer. I spent a couple nights sitting in an armchair (lying down made it worse), holding my head and hoping it would stop.

Hope you feel better. Please get it checked out if it doesn't stop soon.

Workouts are looking great, my friend, although I may have to stop drinking water after reading your log.

My dentist, my kids all giving me heck about not seeing a doctor, so called again, and after a few tries they scheduled me for this afternoon. I was sure that he would send me on to ER for some sort of scan. He almost immediately ruled out stroke or stroke like events. Which I had kind of figured out on my own. He didn't think my grip was weak (I told him I was a serious weight lifter with LOTS of grip, but not as much as a week ago). He said the symptoms did not make a whole lot of sense. So I chimed in, 'not serious then'. He countered, 'I didn't say that'. Neurology appt scheduled for July (first opening). Anyway I did not have to go to the ER. Yeh! If it gets much worse then I must go. I still think it is some sort of virus, probably in or near my spinal nerves.

Son is wondering/suspects if weightlifting injury could have caused the weak grip, and tingling moving up arm, and to neck and head? But what about the diarrhea at same time? Getting old is a pain in the ass, neck, head and about everywhere else.

Spent the evening at Church, Men's club, and I did a brief presentation on my trip to Istanbul. Fun.

Had crown installed today, and tooth cleaning (my unfavorite), dentist was still concerned regarding symptoms. I had the feeling she (and a long time family acquaintance) thought she knew what I had. Course dentists could be attacked for diagnosing a non dental disease. Anyway I got to feeling really tired today. So went online regarding spinal meningitus. And it confirmed my suspicions. So I shall declare this is what I have.

viral spinal meningitus:
neurological symptoms
older people do not have standard symptoms
accompanied sometimes by diarrhea
tiredness (no energy to go to gym tonight)
lasts about two weeks (I'm in the middle)
Confirm by spinal tap, and type of white blood cells (who needs this, if they are otherwise doing OK)
hospitalisation needed only if symptoms are serious

Hence: I need to monitor myself, and so long as I feel as least OK, do nothing but rest. If symptoms get serious go to hospital.

Probably just as well I had not planned on going to the Summit this year. You guys have a great time. I shall miss seeing you. Next year.

Wow - a week since I went to the gym. I was just too tired, and symptoms of weakness in grip, tingling are continuing. And if my diagnosis is right it will be Thursday before I feel better. So I went today, and did what amounted to a little less than half a workout.

Warm up with 6 shoulder, 4 foamrolling/medicine ball, and 20 standing abs at cable machine.

Then a superset, did it ten times, but only 2 reps each exercise

Alternate chinups and pullups
deadlift with 75 lb dumbbells each hand(I usually do just over 200 barbell, but with my grip.....)
squat at 185 lb (down about 30 lbs from usual)

And this wore me out, but I avoided gettting exhausted. I also forgot my preexercise Regular Insulin shot, and spiked at about 128, it was down to 100 by the time I got home.

Sauna. Tomorrow I may go and do HIIT sprinting.

June 5 and the plague continues. Maybe I can get to the gym tomorrow. I did a garbage run today, but relied on wife to give me a hand.

Default A Misc. workout

I warmed up with the 4 foam rolling/med. ball from i/o,

I proceded to the squat rack and did sets of 3 reps at:
135,155,175,195,205,210,215,22 0, and 225. It felt good to get some heavier weights on.

After that I did pushups, 3 sets of 15 reps

Still felt OK, so upstairs to the indoor track

warm up 3 laps trot and walk
5 sets of (run one, walk one) laps 3 and 4 at 20 seconds, but 5 was a slowed to 22, so thought it prudent to quit
and 2 laps to cool off.

A mile altogether, and off to the sauna.

My d.in.law urged me to consider going very light on grip exercises until my grip comes back.

Hope you feel better soon, Rob. You were definitely missed at the Summit.

I think those heavy squats indicate that you're on the mend!

We had company for several days. I did go to a lap session with Bro-in-law. Only swam half a dozen laps. This 'whatever I have" I still have, though it has eased up a bit. Wednesday night I went to the gym, and did about half a workout.

Warmed up with 6 shoulder exercises and foam/medicine ball rolling

Supersets

3 reps Barbell Bench Presses at 135/5 reps deadlifts at 110
I did 8 sets of these. BP a little hard, and DL easy (but I still am babying my grip

5 steps ups each side, 115 lb Barbell/5 each side 3 point row,55 lb
I did 5 sets of these, actually started rows at 45, then 50, then 55 for rest

I was tired, and went to sauna.

maybe you should make an appointment to get seen by someone - that usually clears up what is ailing me

Maybe try another doctor? I don't know, but just reading your symptoms scares me. I would want some one to tell me what the heck was going on, especially as it has continued for quite a while.

I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for the concerrn, I have an appointment with a neurologist early mid July. And I see my Internist again next week. As I said earlier first symptoms point to viral spinal meningitis. In the last couple days friends have suggested checking out 'distal neuropathy', often triggered by toxins. (heavy metals, chemicals, from virus, bacteria????) And another has suggested I check out ALS-like syndrome associated with statin drugs, which I have taken for years. This listed at least one symptom, cramps in legs (in my case lower legs, which I have never had before). I am taking myself off statins, just in case. Symptoms have lasted a week longer than I expected. Several knowedgable people are researching this for me, unfortunately none of them are neurologists.

The neurologist nurse did give me a list of symptoms for which she wanted me to go to the emergency room, not locally, but next town north, where I would be seen quicker. I review the list regularly. I am concerned, as are my kids.

Default Back to Gym after a week of being weak

Saw my doc this am, was told to eat lots of carbs and have high BGs as usual, given a poorly done study all of which I meekly listened to, but will continue to strive for normal BGs and consume low carb. Also have an MRI scheduled for tomorrow, maybe they will figure out what I have. Anyway getting super bored not being at the gym.

Warmed up with all of MagMob easy, and i/o four foam rolling/med. ball and a couple other things. Then did my 6 shoulder exercises. Shoulders have been bothering me.

Then 5 rounds of the following super set
2 chinups
5 Bulgarian Split Squats each side, with 35lb Dumbbells
1 pullup
5 pushups, feet on a bench

This amounts to a little over a third of the volume I used to do, but it is a start.

HIIT
3 laps trot and walk warmup
3 sets (run one, walk one). Actually my times were good, but sure couldn't do my more normal 14 sets.
2 laps cool off

Sauna and shower.

Took rapid acting insulin by mistake last night, so had to eat a couple desserts, and get up every two hours to check blood glucose levels. Yuk - that'll learn me!!
