EdChap vs. Milkman: The Revolutionary War, Part Deux
For those of you who have been following either Ed's or my log recently, you probably saw this coming. We've unofficially been at war since we started logging here back in May/June, and here's how it's gone so far: Ed gets ahead, but then I launch a massive coupe and retake control. Then he snakes me and steals it back. We've been trading shots back and forth, and we finally decided to formalize our battle with a competition log.
In the red corner, standing 6'3" and weighing in at a massive 203 lbs is EdChap.
Ed enters the battle representing his homeland, Mother England. He's got all the class and sophistication associated with England--plus the bad teeth just to keep pace with the rest of his countrymen . "Football" is the popular sport over there, so it's no surprise that he enters our competition with a sizeable advantage in the lower body lifts like squats, deadlifts, and their variations.
And in the blue corner, standing 6'4" and weighing in at a measly 196 lbs is the Milkman
Milkman enters the battle royale representing the best damn country in the world--the USA. Like a true American, he's loud, obnoxious, and fully convinced that the world consists of two countries: "USA" and "Not USA". As a good American, Milkman's got the gunz in this fight . He comes in with the advantage in upper body movements--particularly in the Bench Press, Horizontal Rows, and Pull-Ups.
Let the battle begin...

Nice.
Is this just a general challenge, or is there a specific goal?

It's a general challenge, because we're both about the same height, weight, strength, and we're both beginning NROL Strength 1 with similar goals. First and foremost, we're looking to gain strength. Secondly, we're looking to bulk up some more. I think my goal is around 210 lbs by spring, and I think Ed is pushing towards 215-220 if I'm not mistaken.
At any rate, with all the similarties it made sense to have a formal competition log.

253x1 (ties PR)
198x6
258xF
165x10

Bii. Step-up, 3x15/leg - 22
C. Back Extension, No back extension station, will do pull throughs next time.
D. Reverse Crunch, 2x10 - BW
Comments: Holy shit, ugggh! Squats were fine, until I got to 117.5kg. I broke out of the hole, struggled and then stalled and sat back down. The guy who was working in with me came and took the bar off my back, kind of like a rack pull, ha. I think I've got it in me, but after a week off I just needed to grease the groove with my CNS.
I was testing the waters with the superset and oh...fuck they were tough. My legs were like absoloute jelly after the high rep squats which I hadn't done for 3 months and these destroyed me. I finished these and then rested for 5 minutes, staving off Mr. Pukey, however, he came for me, and he came big!
I walked out of the gym, along the corridor, made it to the elevator and pressed the button. I was struggling to hold back the puke, I knew there was no way I was getting to the changing room upstairs, the lift was too slow and I exploded all over the inside of the elevator, not once, not twice, but three times. Where the fuck are the bins when you need them?!?
On my way out I went to reception and told them that 'someone' (I felt so guilty) had puked in the elevator, she didn't look impressed.

Notes
*Very shaky today. My legs felt kind of jelly-ish after the week off and the extra running I did. For that reason, I thought it was a good idea to "wake up" my upper body with a few moderate lifts at the end of the workout, and hence the addition of that extra bench and rowing work.
*I might switch to front squats (at least sometimes) to work more on form, just as I might have to switch to some elevated DL's on the DL days.

Oh my god, Ed. You puked after the first workout of the war? Sorry, but I laughed out loud when I read that.
If nobody minds, I'll take a few minutes after each workout to recap. Any other opinions out there are welcome.
Workout 1 Recap:
Squats:
-Ed tied his PR of 253 and failed on an attempt of 258
>> Squat total of 6259 lbs.
-Milkman failed at his attempt to set a new PR of 235, (you've got some catching up to do, bud)
>> Squat total of 6020 lbs.
Bulgarian Death Squats:
-Ed: hard to tell if he was using 44 lb DBs or 22 lb?
-Milkman gutted it out with 30 lb-ers (youch!)
Step-ups:
-Ed: again hard to tell if he was using 22 lb DBs or 11 lb (surely not)?
-Milkman kept it consistent with 30 lb-ers
We'll forego discussion of the other lifts. Suffice it to say, Milkman apparently had a lot left after the workout, given the amount of weight he moved with the BP and rows. Impressive, Milkman.
But, my opinion is that the day goes to EdChap with his impressive squatting abilities. Ed also takes home the coveted Steve-O-68 'Mr. Pukey' award with a triple hurl, in the 'lift' no less. The other gym patrons thank you, Ed.
Good start boys...this indeed will be fun to watch.

Fin, that's an awesome round up, thank you!
Yes, I'm ashamed to say that my legs were so battered I was using 22lb DB's for the BSS's and 11's for the step-ups (first time doing them.) That said, I'll look to do more next week when I'll, hopefully, be used to the volume. I'm going to attribute the 30 pounders that Matt uses to the endurance he built up in swimming, very impressive!
My friend just got back from the gym and apparently the elevator has 'Out of service' signs all over it, haha!
Oh, and don't forget the booby prize for Milk, his endurance merits some form of recognition;

That is an awesome summary Fin. And for all the new readers, I should mention that Fin deserves credit for the log idea.
