An update on the work front back in the US:
Linear Algebra Preliminary Exam: DONE
Differential Equations Preliminary Exam: DONE
Complex Variables Preliminary Exam: DONE
Multi-Vector Calculus Preliminary Exam: DONE
So I survived it all, and I managed to do very well in 3 of the tests, and perhaps decently enough in the 4th (but I won't get results for another week or so). This past week, I honestly spent well-over 40 hours with my nose in the textbooks, and I'm betting I went through about 100 sheets of paper for written examples and problem sets... and this was on top of having to attend regular classes.
I'm pretty proud of the way I focused and got my business done. In the last 2 weeks I've re-learned 80% of the math I used in undergrad, and I've learned and self-taught my way through 2 courses I had never taken before. AND IT'S FINALLY DONE!!!
Now I'm just ready to get re-serious in the gym.

Congrats, Matt! Let us know how you did when the results come through.
Oh wait, nevermind, I just got a sneaky peak of your test paper;

I got the exact mark back for the essay I handed in late; even with the 10 marks taken off, I was only 2 marks off a 1st, or an A for you yanks. Which means with the 10 marks, my essay was ownage!
|
Great job, Ed. Work on the late thing...just for practice.
Nothing wrong with setting a new standard of excellence. Go for it, Ed. We're all proud.

I know that we've all heard the stories about curling in the squat rack about a millions times now. I'm sick of it, too. But there was a guy today who was exceptionally inconsiderate about it...
When I got to the gym today (6:15 AM), this chump was firmly planted in the lone squat rack. Even though I was planning on starting with front squats today, I figured I could deal with it.
So I do a few sets of speed DL's and some dynamic mobility stuff to kill some time, and about 10 minutes later I come back and he's *still* curling in the only squat rack in the gym. I politely asked "how much longer are you going to be using the squat rack?". "Probably a while," he said in a condescending tone, "I've got about 6 more sets buddy."
It was during this exchange that I realized he was wearing a full-sized weight belt *and* wrist straps to better handle the 65 lbs he was curling. He's not a newbie, and I'm not exaggerating about any of that.
Now I know that he's entitled to use the gym, and he's entitled to do whatever he pleases there as long as he's not breaking rules or endangering himself or anyone else... but what the hell can you do when this happens? My workout today was supposed to be (1) front and back squats, (2) good mornings, (3) split squats. Obviously, that plan changed when Mr. Biceptz decided that the bar in the rack was far superior to the other bars in the gym.
Arghhh.

Wow, he was curling 65 lbs? Uhhhhh, I mean....what an asswipe.
I've never had this experience, so I wouldn't know how to deal with it. Next time, I'd probably show up at the gym at 6am. :p

Ask if you can work in... load the bar, watch him crap his pants at the thought of you curling 185, and squat. Then kill him.

Haha, yea I feel like a whiny bitch for complaining about it... but it just wasn't cool to see a guy so dedicated to curling.

Everyone deserves a night to get trashed now and again. Congrats on getting it all done.
Looking forward to seeing your new PR's. I think I'm about ready to set some new ones in Squats, DL's, and Bench.

Ultimate Offseason Training Manual: Lower body;
A. Elevated deadlift, 4x4; 264
B. Bulgarian Split Squat, 4x8/side; 60/hand
C. Glute-ham Raise, 4x8; BW
Di. Plate Pinch, 3x30sec; 2x22, 2x11, 2x11
Dii. Side Bridge, 3x30sec/side; 33, 33, 33
Comments: That's fucking right, daddio. Back in the groove...next week is 4 deadlift singles, I look forward to it. Split squats were tough, but doable, I've got more in me for next week. Glute-ham raises are improving but the plate pinches were tough, 2x22 was a little heavy...only managed 1 set before I had to drop it. Side bridges were easy money.
