Holy shit, nice work on the squats. I love how you resisted the urge to go heavier, damn it. And those single leg squat. Ah, to have that kind of flexibility again and go ass to calves.
It's also good to see Nate posting again.

On to training, those squats yesturday, are you still pushing the high bar oly style squats for strongman there quadzilla? Those are sweet man, great work. BTW have you seen the training clip of marius doing squats and then leg press? They're on the internet somewhere, I will track it down and send it to you, I think you'll totally dig it.
Keep training hard man!

Hopefully we see a new Nate Training log pretty quickly here.
I am still using a high bar full squat, I really think its a better squat not only for strongman but also for my body type. Its way more comfortable and the poundages are just as high as I ever low bar wide stance squatted.
The Mariuz clips are awesome. I am pretty sure I have it bookmarked at my comp at school. The guy is a freak!

Thanks man! I am really really pumped to hit a max squat. I have a feeling that a big PR is coming. I am really glad I managed to resist going heavier. Training today would have suffered had there been any more volume. I felt it with the amount I did.
I suprised myself with the single leg squats. They were way deeper than last week. It makes me excited. Holding the plate actually made the balance easier so I am glad I am getting strong enough to need it.

Strongman
Yoke Walk
400x50 feet x2 - no belt
500x50 feet x1 - no belt
640x20 feetx1 - belt
640x20 feetx1 - belt
the last two runs were brutal as hell and I popped about every blood vessel along my traps, it looks awesome! I wish I had a camera right now.
Shield Carry
385 lb steel shieldx140 feet - wow was this hard. I have some crazy bruises from this. It needs to get better though. Getting comfortable with a giant steel shield trying to tear your arms off is tough.
Tire Flip
800 lb tire x 9 flips
i almost died. Tried to go 100 feet and was about 3 flips short before I couldn't flip anymore. This is a big tire and much bigger than the one in my next contest so I feel pretty good about this.
There were some other random farmers, frame, and log stuff mixed in but nothing hard enough to log.
Great training day overall and I stuck with my plan of not doing anything that would overly affect leg strength on Monday. Go me!

A 385 lb shield carry!?! That is insane, Danny. I'd like to find something to mimic that event, but haven't had any luck to date. Definitely won't give a second look to anything close to that weight.

405 on an RDL and a 385 shielf carry. Holy Sh%t. Who thinks these events up? I can see the conversation.
Strongman 1: What the hell is that on the ground over there?
Strongman 2: I dunno. It looks really heavy!
Strongman 1: I bet I can carry it farther than you.
Strongman 2: Nuh uh!!

Greg - Carrying anything will kind of mimic it. Sandbags, rocks, children, etc...
But I think the best way to mimic the event is to pay a really fat person to sit on your chest so you can't breathe while people beat your forearms with lead pipes.
Here is a pic of the shield. Ours in blue and not quite as pretty. It also has sharper edges than this one.
Gabe - thats exactly how most of our conversations go.
John - I think so, although I know a couple people who would probably not agree. I have my eye on the prize and I plan to make a big splash this year.

Strength Speed Lowerbody
A) Squats
3x3 295 not as fast as I wanted. Pretty beat up
B) High bar Goodmornings
2x8 225
C) 1 leg squats
1x8 each side
I was feeling pretty run down today. Missed a meal before training and was a bit sore. I didn't get a chance to do any rolling before training and I felt extra tight. Okay session even though the volume was light.

Strongman
A) Yoke walk
500x50 feet - no warm up is no fun
500x50
B) Yoke Walk into Tire Flip
550 lb yokex50 feet
800 lb tirex5 flips
totally cashed after this
C) Farmers Walk/Chain Drag Medley
235 Farmersx50 feet
560 chain x dominated...I only got it about half the distance before my quads gave out. They are just dead from all the squatting. I think I will be stronger for the contest but its making the training days a bitch.
D) 10" Log Push Press - just to kind of feel it out
155x5x2 sets felt really good but this is crap weight
E) Shield Carry x 170 feet - way better than last week
Chipotle x 1
NFL Blitz tournyx1
I helped some friends move a piano today and have already helped 2 people move out of apartments. I have one more move next weekend. If another person asks me to help them move I might have to take up something like knitting.
Shoulders are feeling kind of beat up from the way I slept last night so hopefully I can fix that tonight.

Hey, piano movers get paid good money. Start advertising. LOL
It's tough to be strong, but a burden you must bear.

Looks like your training is still kicking ass... Do you feel like you are on track for Grand? I'll be out there for sure.
I have a question about your RDLs... how far down do you go? In your mind, what is the difference between RDL and SLDL?

John - They sure do! That shit is hard. Although we had a lot of guys and it was a little piano. I got paid in beer, so that was good enough for me.
Alco - Yes Chipotle is amazing. After a long ass day of strongman nothing is better than a giant burrito.
Adam - I am really excited for the contest but the training hasn't been super focused on Grand events. I wish I would have spent a bit more time training my deadlift and a bit more time dragging the chain, but I am going to give it hell. This contest is more of a training day for the St. Cloud contest this year.
For me an RDL invovles a totally neutral back position (flat back) and the bar goes down about halfway between the knees and ankles. The SLDL the back can round over and the bar goes as low as possible. I think the SLDL is a crappy exercise and a back problem waiting to happen which is why you never see me do it.

5/23/06 - low volume week
Lower Body Speed Strength
A) Squats
225x3 - 4 seconds
225x3 - 3.5 seconds - Kick ass!!!! This is shaving 3 seconds off of my previous time of 6.5 seconds with this same weight. I now can do the 60% test from the Summit. Who knew that this Bill Hartman guy might know what he is talking about.
315x1 - wanted to get some heavier weights today because its the only day I will squat this week
365x1 - this is my old PR. It flew up no problem.
405x0 - I tried as hard as I could to resist doing this but I just had to give it a try. I was damn close too and got super pissed when I missed the weight. I can promise this...the next time I have 405 on my back its going to get dominated.
B1) Single leg cable RDLs
2x10
B2) Planks with feet on swiss ball
2x60 seconds
B3) High Cable side bends
2x12

Looking good Danny. That is super fast for 3 reps at 225. I plan on doing timed speed squats in my next set of workouts starting this week, seeing your results today are very motivating. Keep it up man. How do you time your sets?
