Default New Rules - Strength I - The Journey Continues

NEW RULES OF LIFTING: STRENGTH I
Book by Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove

Day 2 - April 11, 2006
Time: 4:40 AM
Weight: 178.8 (-1.2) Starting to shed the sins of Little Rock.
Length (Including Warmup): 50 min.

Notes:
1) B= Body Weight
2) (e) = each side, where right and left are done separately.
3) All routines begin with a 5 minute jog and a general warmup of dynamic stretches and calisthenics.

Workout B:

Superset with Full Rest:

Barbell Bench Press (2 warm-up sets done prior to lifts)
1 x 6 x 135
1 x 1 x 155
1 x 6 x 145
1 x 1 x 165
1 x 12 x 115
Rest: 180 after each set (I cut this to 150)

Barbell Bent-Over Row
1 x 6 x 135
1 x 1 x 155
1 x 6 x 145
1 x 1 x 165
1 x 12 x 115
Rest: 180 after each set (I cut this to 150)

Superset with Full Rest:

Close Grip Lat Pulldown
2 x 6 x 125
Rest: 90 after each set

Dumbbell Shoulder Press
2 x 6 x 80 (2-40s)
Rest: 90 after each set

Straight Sets:

Lower Body Russian Twist

2 x 10(e) x B
Rest: 90 after each set.

Comments: Again a conservative start. This should be an interesting one to follow, since, as you can see, my upper body strength is pathetic. You can see in the first superset that I have already begun tweaking the weights used and hope to hit the right mix on the next workout.

Nutrition wise, I upped my calories from 1,700 to 2,000 and will try that for a few days to see if I can still shed the temporary gains from the Little Rock retreat where my eating was abominable.

You should have been there for the Pizza after the bike ride. I'm still eating on it today....bad, very bad! So what did you think of my gym. Not much for the upper body workout but great for the squats and lunges. Uh, oh, I may piss off Shark for bringing up the weekend again. Glad to see you back on the routine John.

Hey Mahler - checking out the Strength log! Looks really interesting.

You're harsh on yourself - weighing in right after a weekend away!

One of the best gyms I have ever seen. The practical application of all of those lower body exercises was rewarded with one of the most spectacular views I have experienced.

And, feel free to piss off Shark. He knows this is my little corner of the forum and I have a feeling we will be meeting him next year. I'd be a little ruffled, too, if I had not attended.

Dan,
The weigh-in is like ritual to me and I take the bad with the good. Then I punish myself like a Medieval Monk doing penance for his sins.

Relatively speaking it is quite pathetic. I am heading for 400 on my deadlift, which I hope to hit by the end of summer, but I have been stuck at 185 on my bench for ages. If I break 200 by the end of this program, I will be more than satisfied.

haha thanks for the offer John. I was able to purchase it with my cash. I could on the other hand use a new BMW for getting around. A certified-pre-owned BMW is ok. A dark blue. Let me know if thats doable.

Taking the full rest periods will allow you to go marginally heavier right away. (I feel like I keep saying that around here )
Think about it -- you have cut 30s off the rest from bench presses, and 30s from the rows. That's one minute of rest period per set right? Could an extra one minute allow you to lift another 5lbs ? I'm pretty sure.

Alwyn,
I hear you loud and clear. You won't get any argument from me.
Thanks.

would also add to that resting on the rest days.

You are placing huge demands on your body during the gym, yet ya still dont rest I know its only a little exercise then but it still can detract

Og,
I realized that I have somewhat of a following on this forum, but these numbers are blowing me away. I only started in mid-March and the attention this training log is getting is really amazing. I think you guys are just checking to see if the motivator just talks the talk or actually walks the walk. Whatever the reason, I am humbled by the response.
