What's the verdict on the program? How did you like it?

I never liked the look of this program, as it seems to lack the one thing that I feel is most important - the basics.
I had some doubts about the loads on some of the big lifts, especially the deads, but the overall program seemed solid and challenging. I made some gains. Maybe not as much as I expected, but maybe I didn't work hard enough.

When you say you had some doubts about the loads on some of the big lifts, do you mean you don't think the prescribed loads were heavy enough? Im assuming specifically on the deadlift.

Wow, nice finsh of the program. I think you did very well indeed especially for an old guy...

With respect to what is next... What are you seeking to achieve in the next round? Hypertrophy, strength, new PR in something?

Man great job. Regardless of the perceived down turn on the deadlifts. That is some amazing increases. I wonder if you rested a few days and tried just the deadlifts if you could hit the PR! You are amazing!!!!

REST WEEK

Tuesday, October 14, 2008
Time: 4:50 AM
Weight: 183.4 (- 1.8)
Length (Including Warmup): 20 min.

GENERAL FITNESS

Foam Rolling

I guess it boils down more to there being a lot of speed work and less in the way of things like heavy singles. I don't doubt that Eric knows what he is doing, so I just may have reached my potential.

Karla,
Strength has pretty much been my target for a while, with flexibility as a secondary goal.

Yes, when I step back and look at the progress, I cannot complain.

Thank you.

Ha, ha.
I was one of the first on this forum to complete NROL. I have done the Strength Programs 2 to 3 times. I like them a lot and may go back to them.

What are your goals at this point?

More strength? Better overall fitness? Any specific goals(30 pullups, sub 6 minute mile?)

Figure that out first, and then choose a program that'll help you get there.

If you are looking to get stronger you can always eat more and follow a Westside inspired iron program. If you are looking to have more aerobic ability without loosing strength(and probably still gaining a bit), the randomness and intensity of crossfit might work for you. NROL hypertrophy is always fun.

Mahler's reached his potential? Can God create a rock so big that He could not move it? Can Jesus microwave a burrito so hot that even he couldn't eat it? My head is spinning, John.

Eric said it was for intermediate lifters, so maybe you're a bit beyond that. But, you probably push yourself HARD on any routine. Part of Eric's program is designed to show people who might not be doing that, how to. So, people who are close to their max and already do the right things won't see the biggest benefits. IMO.

I'd pop down into the Strongman forum and ask them for help in doing laying out a traditional strength routine designed to bring up the areas you want to focus on.

If you enjoyed Max Strength you could always have a look at Westside for Skinny Bastards, its similar to MS in you have your main movement and then a bunch of assistance stuff, plus speed work.

Its more of a template than a program though, so you have to put in a bit of effort in choosing and rotating your movements, but you have more than enough knowledge and experience to do that successfully.
You can check it out here WS4SB

Mahler, you did an outstanding job with MS. I would put you up pound for pound against anyone your age or 25 years younger.

Funny WS4SB should be brought up. That's what I've decided to move forward with. I agree with Mindpower's assessment regarding the mixing in of good assistance work with each max effort session. After doing 4 weeks of Bill Star's 5 x 5, I felt like I was ignoring some of the assistance stuff that EC had in MS. The other nice thing about WS4SB is if you reach a plateau on Max Effort Bench, then you switch to Floor Presses, etc. It's got a great assortment of movement choices.
