LOL. I just realized that with passing the 3.1 mile mark these past few runs, I have completed a 5k run. I have run approx. 3 miles in the past but never gave it much thought. Not an impressive accomplishment, but a PR just the same.

I love to run. It is such a nice change from lifting, which is still my favorite method of training. I am going to try to increase distance by keeping my running time at around 30 minutes and hopefully improving my speed. But, I don't see me going for long runs like some of the guys who train as runners.

John - for someone who doesn't run much, great job on running at 8min/mile...that is phenomenal. I'm wishing I could do that on the 10K I'm running in this weekend...won't be easy.
Great Job!

... and he doesn't consider himself athletic.
At 26, I DO consider myself athletic, and it wipes me out to do 1 mile at an 8 minute pace.
John- I appreciate your modesty. Keep up the good work!

All weights are impressive and your improvements even more so. Leave some high goals for the rest of us to beat.
Keep up the heavy work.

Hang on, guys. I gotta keep honest here. There are some 4 mph rest jogs in between each mile. Total time is 30 minutes for the 3.24 mile run including the jogs.

NEW RULES OF LIFTING: STRENGTH I
Book by Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove
Day 18 - April 27, 2006
Time: 6:00 AM
Weight: 175.6 (-0.8)
Length (Including Warmup): 50 min.
Notes:
1) B= Body Weight
2) (e) = each side, where right and left are done separately.
This week: Week 3: Workouts C, D, A
Workout A:
General Warm-Up
Calisthenics
2 Warm-up sets of squats at 135.
Straight Sets:
Full Squat
1 x 6 x 205 (10 lb. increase)
1 x 1 x 235
1 x 6 x 215 (20 lb. increase)
1 x 1 x 255 (20 lb. increase) below parallel, but not as deep as I would like
1 x 12 x 145 (10 lb. increase)
1 x 20 x 135 (40 lb. increase) these always seemed too easy, so I really increased the weight
Rest: 180 after each set
Superset: (with no rest between sets)
Bulgarian Split Squat - 3 x 15(e) x 60(2-30s) (10 lb. increase)
Step-Up - 3 x 15(e) x 60(2-30s) (10 lb. increase)
Rest: 90 after each superset
Straight Sets:
Back Extension - 2 x 10 x B+35 (10 lb. increase)
Swiss-Ball Crunch - 2 x 10 x B+45 (10 lb. increase)
Rest: 90 after each set.
Comments: I slept in a little this morining since I am taking a few vacation days from work and heading for Milwaukee at noon. The squats increased in weight this week, but I have to say they were not as deep as I would like. Unless I go parallel or below, they don't count but I would like to get these much deeper. The split squats and step-ups were brutal at the new weight. Getting some extra sleep didn't seem to help.
NOTE: Because of my trip, I will not be posting until next Tuesday, unless I can get access somewhere, since I will not be taking my laptop with me. Have a great weekend, all.

That's still a pretty good pace, especially since you've never focused on running.
Have a great trip!

As usual, good work, John.
John, with your goals, I'd suggest that you should for sure limit your running time to 30 minutes. But, to better your speed, I'd offer something Bill H recommended to me: half mile intervals, at least for one of your runs. Run a half mile at your best time/speed. Rest the same time it took to run it. Then repeat two or three times.

Back in the day I could run 3 miles pretty quick. It's been a goal of mine to do a 5K since it's been 15 years since I last did it racing.
Good work John. Are you sure you aren't fibbing about your age.

John, I wish I had read this earlier, I would have loved to hook up for lunch or something while you're in town. But unfortunately I'll be traveling myself this weekend (in-laws, Indiana...Fun!!). Weather here's suppose to be nice, in the low 60's for most of the weekend. Have to get out and run!!! Enjoy you're time here, it's nice this time of year.
