Mary I am doing really well right now. My low back has been a bit tweaked, but it seems to be healed and isn't holding me back at all. Training wise things have been kicking ass, especially the upperbody stuff which has been a weakness for so long. Squatting is coming along great too.

The big contest is April 22. Its in Chicago and has 40 total competitors and about 1,000 fans watching so it should be fun and I really need to gear up and kick ass. The next weekend I might do another contest but its a smaller one.

Strongman "season" just sort of starts mid-April so my training leading up to it really has to be on the ball.

Thanks for asking!

Danny

Max Effort Lower body

Not a great day today. I did this workout at the YMCA I work at and was reminded why I don't ever workout there. The bars are absolute crap and people always want to talk to me so it kills the intensity. One of the other trainers talked to me the whole damn time and it was really pissing me off.

A) Wide Stance Goodmorning - the plan was to hit a max triple, but the bar was sliding off my back once it got heavy
185x3
225x3
275x3
285x3
305x1-slid off my back
Had two people ask me about my "squat" form

B1) 1 leg dumbbell deadlift
3x10 35s
B2) Bulgarian Split Squat
3x10 35s
C) Cable wood chops
2x12

Danny,

I suppose it's hard for you since you work there, but I just "lock" myself into the squat rack and go to town. There must be something about people using the squat rack and not doing endless amounts of curls and bench presses because no one ever talks to me!

I can only dream about doing a 305 pound good morning and saying it was not a great day. LOL

Chris - thats what I would normally do at a Fitness center, and I will do at the Student Fitness Center, but I really can't at work. Each of these people is a potential client and I represent the Y when I workout so I really can't ignore them or be rude.

John - Its all relative, I am not sure if I could get through all the stuff you have been doing in your log, its brutal. It should have been an easy fucking triple though so it pisses me off badly to miss.

Strongman
traveled to the cities this weekend to train. Damn do I miss it. The intensity is way higher, its much more fun, we do more, and its brutal. My back was really holding me back today. I think I am going to take a week off next week. This is just getting stupid trying to train through.

A) Farmers
215x80 feet in 13 seconds - crap time. I need to get faster

B) Frame Carry - 4 man team to go 600 feet. Each drop a new guy comes in. I did about 150 feet of it. This was brutal but good fun.

C) Arm Over Arm truck pull - I got wrecked by this. We used a 2" rope and it destroyed my forearms.

C.5) Shield Carry - this is a brutal 380 lb piece of steel shaped like a shield carried for distance. I only went about 50 feet but it was my first try. I have some kick ass bruises. Forgot to write this yesterday.

D) random sandbag filling and lifting

I wanted to do more but the back just wouldn't have it.

Fun day though.

Danny

I'm sure you know this.. and maybe I'm just repeating it to myself for my own injuries but we all tend to have to hear things more than once to start believing them :

Once your back doesn't hurt.. you still have to bring it up to par before maxing it.. you can't just expect it to be as it was before injury as soon as you don't feel it.

take care

Mary its defiantly something I need to hear. I am bad about that with myself. I don't like taking steps back. I also need to stop being so lazy with my regen stuff and my extra glute work. That would help the situation a lot!

Danny,
Even with the back problems, it sounds like you had a good time working out for Strongman. Some amazing shit.

John - You are right, it was a blast! The training is fun as hell, especially with these guys.

3/27/06

Dynamic Effort Lowerbody - Medium volume week

A) Box Squats
6x2 225+purple bands - okay this week

B1) Glute ham raises
2x8
B2) Seated Cable Rows
2x6 165

C) SHELC
2x10

Quick workout, lots of mobility stuff before hand. One thing I have noticed is that my calves are really tight lately. I think part of this is from using Oly shoes that have a bit of a heal, which makes calf flexibility less necessary.

I'm into my 5th week of doing physio exercises for my shoulder. and it's really paying off.. but every day I log them and write : " LEFT SHOULDER I WILL NOT GIVE UP. I WILL REGAIN FULL MOBILITY" even if it's a copy-paste.. i read it as I paste it.. and it helps.

but then.. it has taken me to be my age to start acting smart about this stuff.. guess some things take time to learn (I dare you to prove me wrong )

Nice work Danny. Dumbbell push presses are hard! Pulldowns? where are the pull-ups?

I want to train strongman too, but I think it is too far a drive for me.

Buk - They are really hard with dumbells, I never knew that until last week. You lose a lot of power on the drive keeping them steady. Hopefully it carries over at least a bit to my log press.

I feel so pathetic with the pulldowns, but I can't do high rep pullups with a good pause at the chest with good scapular movement. The goal here is the full 10 reps, otherwise I would. I usually hit some pullups on Saturdays.

CA - Shoulder stuff varies and some does fall under rotator cuff but its a bit more complex than that. Today it was some one arm cable pullovers to stretch the lats and engage the serratus, some crazy rows I saw on elitefts to really get the scapular depression going and then some rear delt and lower trap work. Its just high rep stuff and it has really made a difference in my shoulder health. I just kind of pick a couple at random each time I do it.

Thanks for commenting guys.

MEish Lower - cycle 2 medium volume

A) Front Squat
up to:
3x3 275 these felt good and I powered through my sticking point no problem. I mentioned in another thread but I have a new goal of 405 for a single on the front squat. I will kill it soon.

B) Snatch Grip Romanian Deadlifts
225x6
275x6
295x6
315x6
these all felt awesome. My back stayed perfectly tight and arched, the shoulders stayed pinned back and I felt a great stretch through my hamstrings. These haven't felt this good in a long time.

C1) Cable Woodchops
2x6
C2) 1 Leg raises
2x12
C3) Dead Bugs
2x12

Great workout today. I feel really good right now. The confidence is back and I am ready to kick some ass in Chicago.
