Re: Deserve Victory - The Ongoing Battle of and for the Bulge
The world is conspirering against me. I started feeling bad on Friday night and the doctor office confirmed on Saturday morning that I officially have strep throat. I won't be contagious anymore on Monday.
This month is working against me.

That is so lame. I hope it passes quickly. Good thing February is a short month, but it does only leave about a month before the retreat. I hope that you can get back at it soon and enjoy your new gym!

Re: Deserve Victory - The Ongoing Battle of and for the Bulge
I slept all day yesterday and laid around today. I'm starting to feel better. If I feel good I'll hit the gym tomorrow. Maybe not at the 5 AM start time though. My wife goes out of town for a couple of days next week so I need to get my work in.

Re: Deserve Victory - The Ongoing Battle of and for the Bulge
What an awesome morning. To do DL’s with and actual bar ripping calluses into your hand was great. Even though I moved the weight well I think I need to drop the it down to concentrate on my form. My mind knows what a good DL looks like but my body doesn’t necessarily know what one feels like. Does any one have a suggestion? On the plus side I was really driving down with my heel which means that all the stretching in S2B might have done some good. For those who remember last years retreat I was having a real problem pulling up on my toes because of tight hip flexors. I still owe Danny for that lesson.
At the end of the morning I was sweating, the queasy feeling was back, and the workout was completed as written with no modification for poor equipment. I’ll be sore tomorrow. It was a good day.
2/21/06
Workout B ( 3 sets unless noted)
Superset 1
Deadlift 1 x 8 @ 205, 2 X 8 @ 185
Core Hold 60 secs per leg
Superset 2
Reverse Lunge 12 @ 30
V-Ups 3 X 12 @ BW
Pushup 25, 10, 10, 10, 10

Re: Deserve Victory - The Ongoing Battle of and for the Bulge
if you want to get a same affect with a lesser weight slow the speed down to a 10/10 that way you can really concentrate on the form and the TUT will maximise your efforts :-)

Good idea. I sometimes forget that there are more than just one or 2 parameters you can change to challenge an exercise.

Re: Deserve Victory - The Ongoing Battle of and for the Bulge
2/23
The wife is still out of town so I slipped into the garage and did 20 minutes of jump rope HIIT. 30 secs with a 90 sec rest. I'll admit if the song was good I just kept going only stopping when I couldn't jump anymore.
It felt great. My diet this week has been awesome. I've discovered those tuna packets. If I mix them with a little relish they are great. Things are really starting to shape up. I might actually be to fighting weight by the retreat.
I also got another pleasant surprise that I forgot to mention the other day. When I went to the doctor she took my blood pressure and was amazed at how perfect it was. The exact quote was "100/60 you can't get much better than that".

Re: Deserve Victory - The Ongoing Battle of and for the Bulge
Way to go on getting the workout in under your single-parent circumstances, Gabe. And congrats on the diet - those 6 weeks are getting shorter by the day, aren't they? LOL. Nice one on the BP too. My upper number is always high for some reason (~150), though the lower one is OK which I gather is the most important. I keep meaning to ask the doc about it.

Re: Deserve Victory - The Ongoing Battle of and for the Bulge
I've still got some more to cut down but It's starting to look like a stomach in there. I've been doing a 2/2 split bulking for 2 and then cutting for 2 weeks does anyone have an opinion on this?
The reason I started was that all the traveling was putting some unwanted fat on and this worked. Now I like the concept because it's been easier for me to stay on the band wagon and eat clean during a bulk.
I have to at least look like I work out by the retreat or you boys will wonder if all I do is e-mail.

Gabe,
I am sure you will look great. Just hide those muscular fingers and no one will know you do an e-mail workout.

It's great to see that you've already shaken it off and you're back in the gym, Gabe. Thanks for inspiring me to kick this strep throat in the ass.

Gabe, it seems you've overcome a few obstacles this month...single parenthood included. Great job with the weights too. Keep up the fight.

Re: Deserve Victory - The Ongoing Battle of and for the Bulge
Joining the real gym was a great catalyst for getting things moving. It's also gotten me to push myself a little harder than I normally would.
He is my workout from yesterday 2/24. It was an interesting workout. There was a girl in the cage doing every version of a squat you could do so I did my workout in reverse order and then split the last superset apart waiting for her to clear out. It affected my workout by not letting me push as much weight as I had in the past.
I also had my first bit of unsolicited advice. A guy tapped me on the shoulder and began to tell me that I am going to low on my incline shoulder press and that I am setting myself up for an injury. I thanked him for his concern, told that I like the muscle activation I was getting and assured him that this form had not gotten me hurt in 2 years of doing the exercise.
Workout A
Superset A
Dumbbell Bench Press 3 x 8 @ 60 (went up)
Bent Over Row 3 x 8 @ 35
Exercise 1
Bench Press 2 x 6 @ 135, 1 x 4 @ 135, 1 X 5 @ 115
Exercise 2
Dumbbell Row Shrugs 2 x 10 @ 20, 1 X 10 @ 25
Exercise 3
DB incline Press 60 with 25 lbs in 5:40 minutes

I got some baseball practice in with my son. That has to count for something. Call it a mental happiness workout.

Re: Deserve Victory - The Ongoing Battle of and for the Bulge
I really dropped the weight trying to get my form right on the DL. I'm going to keep doing it until I get to a comfortable spot. I was really rounding my back on previous lifts. Hopefully some of the gang can give me some feedback at the summit. I think my legs are my weak spot. I am expecting some big growth over the next month out of them.
I don't mind pain but I don't want to hurt myself.
2/27/06
Workout B
Superset 1
Deadlift 3 x 8 @ 155
Core Hold 60 secs per leg
Superset 2
Reverse Lunge 2 x 12 @ 35, 1 x 12 @ 30 (more total weight)
V-Ups 3 X 12 @ BW
Pushup 25, 15, 15, 15, 10

Re: Deserve Victory - The Ongoing Battle of and for the Bulge
ow v ups after that already hard core workout! You'll have abs made of titanium! I hate V ups they were created by the devil himself! That and straight leg hanging leg raises!
Try this one: crunches: 5 secs up 10 secs hold 5 secs down tis good fun when adding weight and its all mind over matter when it come to pain. Must do a plank for 4 minutes again :-)
Good call on the DL's so easy to damage your back doing them wrong, I may drop mine back and go for more reps

Gabe,
Right on as far as Deadlifts go. Forget the numbers and work on form, although 3x8155 is nothing to sneeze at. Good job.

Re: Deserve Victory - The Ongoing Battle of and for the Bulge
Fortunately BFG my abs are in good shape. I have always been able to push them hard. I love planks. Not only are they a great excercise but they get the best looks in the gym. I'll try the slow crunches and let you know. They sound deadly.
John,
It's hard to get comfortable doing such low numbers. With the bar that you and some of the other guys have set I feel that I am re | |
