I told myself that I would start a training log after the new site was up. Now that it is and it seems that JP has worked out most of the kinks, here I go.
Running a marathon has been a goal of mine for a long time and life circumstances have made it possible for me to train and attempt one in 2006. I will actually be starting with a half-marathon on April 1st followed by a 25k on May 13th. These races will be incorporated into my marathon training which will culminate in late summer or early fall.
A quick note on the title to my log. As I finished my run today I passed by a woman who lives in my apartment building. She sarcastically says to me, "That looks like fun." To which I reply "It's my form of meditation."
"Better you than me me," she said. "You got that right," I said.
So, to let you know what my training looks like: I am following Hal Higdon's beginner program for half marathons combined with Chad Waterbury's Total Body Training. As my mileage begins to creep higher and higher my focus will shift to a less stressful total body plan.
I am about 2 weeks into the running program and a week and a half into TBT. I will bring this log up to date in the next few posts.
scheduled 3.5 mile run
4.3 miles 35:44 (8:19 pace)
Tough today. My route took me on some busier streets about the time the high school got out. Some scary drivers. Sheesh. Also with the snow I couldn't run on sidewalks but had to run on the side of the roads. And to top it all off there was a stiff, cold wind 20 mph out of the NW, making 30 degrees feel a whole lot colder.
Failed on the incline DB presses- a little bummed out there. Legs were a little tired from running but tomorrow is an easy day on the bike- should feel good and ready for a 6 miler on Saturday.
This log is very boring, especially compared to some of the illustrated ones (one in particular I'm thinking of- jenn)
More people use my gym for the tanning beds than working out.
I am the only person that does squats and deadlifts at my gym. I get strange looks for the "heavy" weights I use. Either that or I look funny. Maybe it's my lack of a tan.
I've been perusing some marathon traing plans. I'm trying to decide which one to follow this summer after my half and 25k. Man, do I have a bunch of miles to run.
My mother called the other day. She is going to fly out at the end of March to be here to cheer me on at my half. Awesome!
Oh, more good news. My daughter's mom is going out of town next week. My little sweet will be staying with me this Sunday through next Sunday!
Oh well, I'm done with breakfast. Got some studying to do. Have an econ and stats test next week.
I never really found my groove today. The route was a different one from my six miler last week. That one was very flat, this one had a few long hills and one pretty good one right at the end of mile three/beginning of four. I feel like I started out a little too quickly and even had to stop to tie my shoe just about 2 miles in. Had to grind out that sub 8:00 for the last mile to better my time from last week, so all in all I'm happy with today's performance.
Hey twins, good job on all of the running and keeping up the weight training. If you're already banging out 6-mile runs at those paces while also doing lower body weight training - you should do really well at your 1/2-M and 25K.
Wow, did this feel good. Longest run at a sub 8:00 pace in years. Weather was so-so. Some gusty winds and rain/snow mix. I was also surprised at the way I felt; I haven't slept very well for the few nights and slightly over-celebrated my ex's marraige announcement on Saturday evening so I felt a little off, even today.
Another good run. Felt really great. The weather left a little to be desired. We don't have many big hills around here, but we've sure had some strong winds lately. 20 MPH winds (at least they were out of the SW- warmer temps).I also forgot to record my mile splits.- oh well.
You are well on your way to a very successful half marathon. 2 months out posting the running times that you are, espically with comments like "felt really good" and "wanted to do more, but the plan calls for less" has me thinking you will trounce your upcoming races. Have you felt that your running workouts and weight lifting workouts have had any negative effects on one another?
As far as one workout affecting the other, its not been as bad as I thought it was going to be. If anything, though, my running has affected my squats and dead numbers somewhat. A few months ago I was repping 255 on squats and 285 on deads. With all the running (compared to before) 225 is really killer. Could be the total body traing plan of Waterbury's, too. It's hard to say how lifting has affected my running, but I would have to say that it is actually helping because my runs have been steadily getting better, even over this short period of time.
