Thanks, Gregg. It wasn't too bad. It was chilly and wet for the first 9 mile loop. Then the rain let up. However, by the time I got to my drop bag at 26.2, I was glad to get out of my wet shoes. The course was a bit mucky in some of the low lying areas but not horrible. I can think of only two or three spots where I had to pick my way through some deeper mud. It stayed overcast most of the day and, for the most part, we were protected from that strong wind all day. Other than the first couple hours of light rain, I really think I had ideal weather.

Dave, it was the most beautiful sight in the world. Shortly before the bend you can see in the back of me, I passed a spectator who told me there was less than 200 meters to go. I almost cried tears of joy.
Thanks, Gregg. I can't wait to do another.

I lifted weights today. That was the first time in months. It sucked. I hated being inside. Need some ideas for strength training outside.
But maybe not... I've been pushing it too hard since the race and after doing some hill repeats this Wednesday, I've been walking with a limp ever since. My left knee is really sore and has a very slight crunching noise/ feeling when I extend it. Great. My lower left back has continued to bother me, which I can only imagine is my SI joint. My calf and IT band on my left leg are back to being very tight. What a mess. I felt fine after the race but just had to try to get back too soon. The massage therapist thinks I have a piriformis issue going on, as well. (Left side, too.)
I need to make it a priority to stretch at least a half an hour every day. Between sitting at a desk all day and running as my only training, I'm way out of whack.

Thanks, Dave. I do need to cool it, but it's so tough to go from what I was doing to little to none. My max distance was a 33.5 miler with a 20 miler the next day. A few other long back-to-backs were: 16/23.5; 21/26.5; 22/24.5; 31.5/14.

Wow. Spam in my training log. Sorry, bro. Not many people read this one!

I'm late to the game, but nice pictures there Jim. As far as lifting outside, if you drag the barbell outside you can do "floor" (ground) bench presses, deadlifts, etc... pretty much everything you can do inside. Add in a pullup bar.

Hey, Gregg. Thanks for checking up on me. I'm getting a few miles in, as well as lifting a bit. Nothing too serious. My schedule has been crazy busy with work, school, and CPA exam study. Additionally, my leg leg and lower back have been seriously giving me fits. Some days I feel fine, others it bothers me so badly I can barely sit at my desk. Time for another round of PT, methinks.
I have a tentative (hopeful) running schedule that has me doing a full marathon and a 50K in the fall and winter. Then another 50K and maybe a 50 miler in the spring before giving a 100K a go in June 2010. We'll see how this leg issue plays out though. Ideally, I would be starting some marathon training plan soon, to be ready for GR in mid-October.

This log has no gone into my watch list. I'm not only impressed of what you can physically do but also fitting the rest of life into your days as well.
What does a normal day or week look like?
I currently think my 4hr rides are long and take too much time away from the wife.
Almost forgot: you need to post more. Just one more thing to add to you busy life.
Hey, Josh! I'll see what I can do about keeping this updated a little better.
A typical weekday has me getting up about 5AM. I lounge around reading the news and drinking coffee until 6. I work out (either run or lift) from 6 to 7:30ish. I make it to work by 8 or so. I work/study/go to class until 9:00PM. Its a long day. I try to make it to bed by 10, but usually don't until closer to midnight.
My weekend days are slightly more relaxed, though I still get in a long run. When I was training, I squeezed in a 3-4 hour run each day. Nowadays, those 3-4 hours are 6-8 hours of CPA exam review.
Do you have a log that I can catch up on to see what you are up to with thesefour hour rides?

I'm in training for a half ironman triathlon mid august. I recently piked on the run leg so my brother and I are going to do it as a team.
So just lots of swimming and biking for me at the moment.
I'm beginning to see the common thread in real endurance athletes. They don't sleep!
Thats why I'll never be a true endurance athlete.
How'd you get started in running these distances? Got 3 weeks before my team half ironman and after that am thinking of training for a marathon. I'm not a big plan person, but I did follow one for the HIM, but am thinking about kinda just training how I feel, when I feel type set up. Its the end of running season here anyway so would have a fair while to train.
Josh, I just did it incrementally. When I started running a few years ago I did have the idea that I wanted to run a marathon. I had no idea people even ran farther. The thought of running any farther didn't even occur to me until the middle of my second marathon when I was talking with a guy who had run an ultra a few weeks prior. Needless to say, my reaction was similar to the reaction I get when people find out I have done ultras: F that!
However, the more I ran, the more I enjoyed it and the more I wanted to be out there running, so it became this monster that fed itself. Trying to find the time nowadays is the real challenge. As soon as I am finished with school and my exam I am getting back on the horse again.
As for training, I like following a plan and checking off specific workouts- the anal, accountant personality that I am. However, I know plenty of people that train by the seat of their pants, so to speak. For your first, though, I would recommend following a plan to make sure you get in key workouts and progress up to the distance. 26.2 (42 K for you down there I think ) is a long ways and you must respect the distance.

Any good plans that a beginner marathoner should look at. I've found a heap but they all are quite different. Don't want to fall into the trap of a crappy plan to start with. Cheers
