More than 1,000 miles this year, plus all the life you've got going on. Amazing.

Lisa - Thanks! I knew the core group of runners that used to read my log were pretty much gone, or too busy to log any more, so I'm glad to hear that others are reading my 'exploits'.

Yes, there is more school. *sigh* Another class for my undergrad and one more year for my Masters. I haven't had an official offer, but the firm wants me to stay on and is willing to let me even work part time around my school schedule. Not a bad deal- hopefully a permanent offer is forthcoming. I should know by the end of the month when the current crop of interns finish up.

savg - Thanks, man. Way to put it into perspective.

I just can't get caught up with my schedule. I wanted to do 16 with 12 at MP this morning but decided sleeping in was a better idea. I'm now trying to convince Asia that a bike ride while I do an easy 5 miler is a good idea. The 16 miler will have to wait until tomorrow.

Wow Jim, it's been a while since I've read your log and it sounds like things are really looking up for you, in a lot of ways.

PS - I've started logging again too. My new log is "(Stopping) the slow slide".

Hey Ralph! I was just posting in your new log while you must have been checking in here. Glad to see you back!

Jim, I'm still around. Summer semester just ended, so I have a couple of weeks to be my old log-stalking self while I decompress for a few days and then start prepping for Fall classes. LOL!

Looks like your running is going very well. I saw a 20-miler in there! I know you're still having a great time with Asia.

Hi, Dave. I knew you around but super busy- maybe even more than me! With you and Ralph checking in yesterday, and Gregg still popping in, we just need to find Jeff and Jamie! My running has been going pretty well. I'm trying to just trust the plan because I still feel slow and out of shape! (And fat, too.) My time with Asia has been the best ever. It's hard not to look ahead and see Labor Day approaching.

10AUG08

scheduled from yesterday: 16 miles w/ 12 at marathon pace

actual: 16.21 miles w/ 11.97 at mp
2:09:21 (7:59 avg pace)

2.63 miles w/u - 22:52 (8:42)
11.97 miles mp - 1:31:46 (7:40)
1.61 miles c/d - 14:41 (9:07)
---

Kick ass! What a beautiful morning for a run. I'm really pleased with the marathon pace portion. At the risk of being premature (and aggressive), I would like to drop another seven minutes off my marathon time. That would be a 3:22-3:23 which calls for a 7:40-7:45 pace. We'll see. I know full well that a 12 miler, even in the middle of a stretch of 50 mile weeks, is a far cry from a full marathon. That being said, I feel like I could have kept the pace up for several more miles. There wasn't any fading going on up to that point.

Hey tcoy, thanks. My goal marathon is Grand Rapids on October 19. As it stands, that will be my third (ran it in '06 and Bayshore in Traverse City in '07). However, I'm looking ahead to running the North Country Trail Marathon in Manistee, MI on September 20 as a training run.

I'm also running a trail half marathon this weekend. It will be my first trail race. I'm a bit nervous about it. I need to get over that, though. I really hope to run the Ice Age Trail 50 next May!

Excellent goals!!! I just realized you posted in the Chicago post I made. Sorry I never made the connection. Are you following a training program?

I have only done 1 trail run, a 5k. It was pretty fun. I was just paranoid of twisting my ankle. If I was going to do a lot of them I would get trail shoes.

I'm following the Pfitzinger/Douglas 24 week 55mpw plan from Advanced Marathoning. I started it about five weeks in. I had really wanted to find a plan that peaked in the mid 60s, but between nagging injuries and no time that just couldn't happen. I will get three 20 milers in, though.

I do have some trail shoes, but its so rare that I get to use them! I don't have any right outside my door, and with the limited time I have, I can't use any time to drive to the nearest trails.

Nice 16-miler! Did you deliberately come in just under 8:00 pace? I would do that. LOL!

I'm sure you'll like the trail race. The main thing I notice about running on trails is that the runs seem longer. 1 mile feels like 1-1/2.

Dave, how would you compare your pacing in a trail race to a road race? If you're saying a mile on the trail feels like 1 1/2, are you implying that a 7:00 pace on the roads translates to a 10:00 on the trail? Or is it just the ups and downs, twists and turns on the trail that gives you the impression of running farther?

BTW, no I didn't plan my 16 miler pacing that way. I do like seeing a 7:xx pace on my long run, though.

4.2 mile recovery run

Forced myself to get out of bed to run. Tonight I'm hitting the track for some speedwork. I'm thinking 600s or 800s. Should be a fun-filled evening.

I don't slow down that much on trails compared with the road, but it definitely feels longer. I think it is all of the twisting and turning.

The only trail race I have ever done (twice) was a 10K "scramble" on the side of a mountain. It was rocky and hellaciously hilly, so it felt more like a half marathon. I'm hoping to run some "normal" trail races sometime, but I think I will really have to rebuild my mental endurance as well as physical.

Back when I was running sub-6 paces on flat road 5ks, I was coming in between 7-8 paces for trail 5ks-12ks. A lot of just depends upon the terrain; some "trail" races were flat in wide, dirt roads with plenty of room to maneuver. I've also been in ones that were single track with no room to pass and a lot of steep climbs and hairpin turns. Those kind of races require trail shoes and a bit of fearlessness that you won't trip and fall off the side of a mountain.
