"but hopefully, soon, I'll be able to take you on in a little virtual deadlifting competition"

That's a deal. Even if I end up losing it will be a pleasure.

Cool Jim. I have a 5k on the 1st and my first half-marathon is the next weekend, on the 9th. I'm looking forward to your race report already!

21MAR06

TBT week 7 workout 3

neutral grip chins
BWx 10, 12, 9

BB lunges
3x95x12

mil press
95x 10, 10, 9
slight dip on the last few reps

sumo deads
3x185x12

close grip bench press
135x 10, 9, 6
ugh, these sucked

weighted swiss ball crunch
3x25x25

My legs are still pretty fatigued from that long run and yesterday's run. The lunges were tough esp at a pretty high rep and the deads about put me under. The bench press sucked because my arms were done after chins and presses.

My hottie wasn't there today.
I got to flirt with a different girl, though.

Nice long run, and everything else, too! What's your new half-marathon goal time?? A sub- 1:40 looks like a slam dunk, and I think a sub - 1:38 is very realistic with a taper plus adrenaline rush from the race/competition. You're obviously going to shatter your original expectations for this race!! Great job on the training!!

Thanks, Dave! Considering my normally conservative nature, I'm going to shoot for that 1:41 and will be super pleased with anything under. My knee and achilles are still a little off, so I'll be especially careful this Saturday during the 15K.

I'm afraid I'm going to go out too strong in the half and blow it with the race adrenaline etc. My plan was to stick to a 7:45 and then pick it up the last few miles, much the same as my 13 miler last week. I did that in the middle of the training week, so I'm afraid I'll leave a little on the course for the race- which I don't want to do. Maybe I could shoot for a 7:40?

Arrghh..Talk about over-analyzing. I just want to go out and have fun and do well. Running has just become so enjoyable to me that sometimes the numbers game over-complicates it. Then again, I'm so schizophrenic about it, I always have to outdo my last performance and get caught up in the number game again.

You'll be so focussed it wont matter cos you will achieve and beyond what you anticipate

22MAR06

4 mile run
29:29 (7:22 avg pace)

splits
mile 1- 7:15
mile 2- 7:27
mile 3- 7:05
mile 4- 7:40 (damn wind)

Here's to me taking it easy this week. I feel like such a slacker for only doing 4 miles (my, how things have changed over the last few months), that I have to go out and run it as hard as possible. My legs and glutes were so fried from deads and lunges when I woke up this morning, I didn't think I'd be able to run today. But, after some stretching, I really felt good and got into it as soon as I started. As mentioned earlier, I have a couple minor nagging sore spots. Now I must take two days off from running to rest them up.

For Saturday's race, not only is hot gym chick going to be there, so is my incredibly smoking hot algebra teacher. With her sister. I can't wait to meet her!

I think a 7:40 pace would still fall under the definition of conservative for you -- and would still give you the option of ramping it up in the final few miles depending on how you feel. Yeah, it's hard not to overanalyze these races, and it's hard to project the perfect pace that will keep you from burning out too quickly but also not leave you feeling like you could have done more. Nevertheless, I don't think you'll have any problem running faster than the 13-mile training run you just did with no tapering, so I wouldn't think of 7:40 pace as living dangerously or risky -- should still be in a comfortable race range for you...

Yeah, 1:40:29 minus whatever time you shave off of that when you ramp up! You're going to finish under 1:40 unless you don't sleep for three days ahead of the race or get the flu or something... :p

I love the attitude. Run first for the fun and the numbers will come along just fine.

Thanks, Mahler. Running was something I had to do when I was in the Army. I didn't mind it, but the idea that I had to do it took some of the joy out of it for me. Fast-forward nearly ten years- and many, many cigarettes, beers, and other things, my whole outlook on life has changed. Next to spending time with my daughter, being able to get out in the fresh air and run is one of the most enjoyable things I do. Add the fact that I keep improving at it, I have trouble taking a day off!

Niiiccceeee ... although I think you're planning something that only happens in pornos!

Hey, what happened to the chick you were supposed to run the 15k with?

Given my experience with sleeplessness before races, and Jim's growing nervousness I think that just might be a possibility!

May I recommend a double espresso about an hour before the race (assuming you're a regular caffeine ab-user)?

Hot gym chick is that girl. I gotta keep my options open, ya know!

Love that coffee. The Army made sure of that. I'll have my regular two cups with my oatmeal that morning.

23MAR06

upper body workout adapted from ABBH I

bench press
205x 5, 5, 4
135x 20

seated cable rows
160x 5, 5, 5
100x 20

DB decline press
75s x 10
80s x 5, 6

underhand BB row
185x 5, 5, 5
135x 12

weighted swiss ball crunch
25x 25, 25, 25

Just upper body today to rest legs. They could use it. They are still really sore. I would have thought yesterday's run would have worked the DOMS out, but I guess not. It had to be the high rep lunges.

Saw my favorite gym hottie today. We'll be going out after the race on Saturday.

Caution: very disjointed report!

Well, my first race of the year is in. I've got to say that I'm quite pleased with my performance. This was one hilly course. There were constant rolling hils, but the hills between 4 and 5 and again between 6 and 7 were killers! Not to mention nearly a third of the course was run on gravel roads, which were kind of slick with the melt rain/snow/sleet crud we got last night. However, I was able to really pick it up between 7 and 8. I was very surprised when I checked my watch at the mile marker.

It was chilly to start with, but I decided to go without my cool Brooks running jacket. I'm sure glad I did. I warmed up quick as the sun burned through some early clouds. Near the end, the wind did pick up, and it was damn cold standing around outside after finishing, waiting for hot gym girl to finish.

I don't have one of those photographic memories to be able to recall the whole race, but I do remember thinking of Dave as I ran those hills. I was saying "hills suck" instead of "hills rule", however. lol Oh- lesson learned in this run: double knot your shoes! I had to stop twice to re-tie.

I met up with my algebra prof before the race and standing near her in the starting chute was the only time I was near her. She took off like a bat out of hell and smoked the course in something like a 1:05. The male winner did it in 54:00 and the female in 59:00!

Last night I was doing a little reading online, and had almost convinced myself that my sore achilles was tendonitis. I went to bed pretty bummed out, but was able to fall asleep quickly and soundly. I even woke up 2 minutes before my alarm went off. I stood up out of bed and was amazed. No pain or soreness at all in my ankle! And it feels pretty good right now.

Well, a week til my half. I'm nervous about it, yet confident I'll do well- especially after today. I'd forgotten how much being in the racing environment gets you pumped up. Here's to a 1:40!
