Well, it's two and a half hours before the race. It's 60 out (which feels like 40 right now! ) and there is a massive T-storm system that will coming through the area this morning with high winds (20-30 mph). Should be an interesting race. Good thing I'm not going into this with the highest of expectations.

Oh yeah that Eastern vs. Central time zone thing again. It was 9:15 when you posted those filthy obscenities!

So what was the time? I'm guessing 20:56.

Sorry about the "downer" race, Jim. Don't forget you had a really good marathon a little over one month ago. After those newbie racing gains, the good ones seem to come in cycles with periods of downer ones. That hit me pretty hard last year. I think you can start mentally psyching yourself out as well. If the races are depressing, I think it can be best to take a break from them for awhile and just focus on training until you have solid signs from training performances that you are back in the game for threatening PR's.

Dave's right. Nobody is always at their peak during training and the same goes for races. If racing is disappointing and discouraging you, it might be better to step away from racing for a bit to train and see progress in a lower-stakes environment.

I should have gotten back to you guys later yesterday, but I couldn't resist the siren song of the the beer tent. lol Here's a quick and dirty rundown of the race:
14JUL07
Michigan Flavorbest Apple Run 5k
chiptime: 20:52 (6:43 avg pace)
splits:
mile 1 - 6:33
mile 2 - 6:51
mile 3 - 6:50
mile 3.1 - :37 (5:37)
Not much to say. We ran in the rain but it wasn't too heavy until afterwards when it just downpoured. Instead of sticking around for the awards ceremony (I should have my friend Sheila won an apple tree for taking her age group), I just ran home in the rain. I was pretty ticked with myself for the race anyways so the extra running was needed.
I was right where I wanted to be for mile one and thought I was keeping that pace for the second and was shocked to see my split. It's not like I was getting passed; in fact, I was passing people the last two miles. The last mile was just your typical hanging on for dear life mile of a 5k. Oh, well. This will be the last race for a while. When Asia gets here we'll do a race for fun but that's it.

Dave and Ralph - I think you guys are so right. Since the beginning of 2006 I've always had a race that I was training for. It is definitely time to take a break and just go back to running for the pure enjoyment I get from it rather than worrying about setting PRs and being competitive. With Asia here it'll be a great time to take that break.

Everything's relative, huh?
She will be here for 6 weeks. Actually we won't be 'here' the whole time. I'll have two weeks left of school, then we're going to Milwaukee for a week or so and after that New Hampshire for a week.
I don't know if you caught it (I made a post about it in my birthday thread) but there was a little concern on my part if her mother was actually going to come through on this. I got confirmation last night that she will be here. I'm so relieved.

I missed that part of your log -- I haven't been keeping up that well recently -- but glad to hear it worked out for you.
Are you going to be anywhere near the coast of NH? I stare at Portsmouth from my office window all day long. Maybe we could get together.
