Jim, catching up after my trip. Your last race was pretty close to my house, but I was at the lake. Doesn't sound like you were happy with your time, but it looked good to me! I'm doing a 10K in Grand Haven at the end of July. That one was a scorcha last year.

Gob- Yeah, my lifting has sucked lately. Pretty much indicative of life lately. I don't know what to say. Normally I'm the kind of guy that latches into something and doesn't let go. The past few months, though, have been a different story. I've really been having trouble concentrating and staying (or getting) motivated. I've been tired a lot and still find myself eating like shit most of the time. I've also been hitting the hooch a little more often than I normally do. After I pretend to not celebrate my birthday next weekend that should be easing off. I've been diagnosed by armchair psychiatrists that I'm fighting stress and depression with school and all the other crap that's gone on in my life lately. I tend to agree but just don't know how to get myself back into gear. I've never felt like this before.

Dave - It was a lot of fun. I could have stayed on the river all day if it weren't for having to study for an exam. Lots of sun. Hope this redness turns to tan!

Ralph - I did flip my kayak once. At the last moment before leving I decided to leave my phone and wallet in my car. Good idea.

Jamie - 32 runs on Friday, 4 on Saturday and Sunday combined. Hot and cold. Nice on the Tigers sweeping the Bosox. Well, nice for you.

Dee - I was pretty close to your neighborhood on Friday night, I think. My friend's band played out at the Watermark Golf Club. That race in Grand Haven, is that the Coast Guard Festival? I'm hoping to do Sparta this coming Saturday and will be looking for something that has a fun run that Asia and I can do when she get here.

Hang in there, Jim. Stress and depression are exhausting. Not too much longer for you with school, and then think of the opportunities!

I've had a huge increase in stress with work lately, and I can imagine how difficult it would be to get motivated to go to a gym when feeling all drained. Do you feel more like working out when you actually get there??

Once I'm at the gym there's no problem. It's getting there. Unbelievably, I've become a person with all kinds of excuses as to why I can skip.

As for your work, are you now teaching?

If you're doing it, let me know. That's not far from the cottage.

I actually just started teaching the second half of a 9-week Summer session course. I definitely wouldn't recommend teaching a course for the first time during an accelerated semester! The amount of prep time is crazy. I really enjoy it, though. The most stressful thing is that, due to huge cuts in research funding, my job has become unstable. And the area where we live is not exactly a hot job market for my field. We've planted roots here and don't want to move, so it's going to be tough deciding what to do.

Keep on plugging Jim. I understand about the depression as I went through a bout of it for a couple of years after I got married. I had all I could do to pull myself together to get to work much more anything else. Hopefully this is just a low tide for you and things keep getting better.

Jim, you've been through worse and come by spectacularly. You'll get through the troubles in your life right now and, no doubt, be successful as a book-cooking accountant.

Sorry to see it looks like you're going through a bit of a down swing after the recent ups. I like Gregg's advice to just keep plugging away. Stick to your routines (gym, work, family) and get done what needs to get done and don't worry about the little shit. Anything lost through beer or poor eating habits will come back quickly given your drive and abilities.

Thanks, guys. What bothers me is that I'm not sure what's wrong. School, money, personal life () are all going well enough. The thing with my daughter and her mom is settled and is what it is. I really feel like I should be able to control this but I don't even know where to begin. I'm sure I'll struggle through it. I am pretty stubborn.

09JUL07

scheduled: lift and run

actual: ABBH Day 3
straight sets 5 x 10, 1 minute rest between sets

squats
5 x 10 x 165

hanging leg raise
5 x 10

calf raises
5 x 10ea x BW +25
---
3.07 mile run
23:12 (7:33 avg pace)
----------------------
Good workout. I knew I needed to get my ass in gear and was really motivated today. It was pretty warm again for the run and my legs were fried from the squats but it still went well- except for momentarily cramping in my left hamstring a right quad.

It's been a pretty eventful year for you. The stress that you've been through (emotionally and physically) was probably going to take it's toll at some point. Maybe you could just use a day to sleep in and zone out on the couch.

Jamie, I would like that but I always feel guilty for doing it because there's something in the back of my head telling me I should be studying, or doing chores, or any other constructive thing (like hanging out at jp's) and I can't fully enjoy it.

3 and a half weeks left of this semester and then 3 weeks off. With Asia here it will be extra-awesome. Of course, we'll have so much to do and so many people to see... lol

Great to hear that Asia's coming to visit soon. I'm sure the countdown started a while ago!

10 days! I can't wait to see her. I'm so nervous and excited.

In other news, I can hardly walk today after my workout yesterday! A tempo run will feel so good later. I'd like to get some sort of pace dialed in for Saturday's race.
