Race For The Cure-Detroit 5K
20:23 (6:34 avg pace)
splits:
mile 1 - 6:42
mile 2 - 6:52
mile 3.1 - 6:49 (6:08)
-----------
This was one of those breast cancer benefit races that seem to be everywhere across the country. Great cause (my ex's mother was diagnosed with it) but it sure brings out the non-runners! I heard that there were 30,000 people at the race today!!! Most were walkers and not all of them started in the back like they are supposed to. Same ol' story of dodging people the first mile. However, it kept me right at the pace I was hoping to be able to hold, about a 6:40. I went into today thinking a 21:00 would be a good day. Well, maybe all the miles, some speedwork, and my new favorite tactic of starting slowly and picking it up paid off. It was quite warm and sunny out and I was drained after mile one. In fact, mile two was really slow. Then something happened during the third mile and I caught my second wind, or finally loosened up, or something. I was able to pick up the pace and found myself passing dozens of people again. What a great feeling.
I couldn't believe my time as I crossed the line. Only 24 seconds off my PR. I immediately began kicking myself for not pushing it a little harder. It may be a stretch but I'm going to shoot for a 19:30 next month at my hometown race.

20:00 (a real one) ain't gonna be shit. 19:30 is certainly attainable.

What was the race route? I'm assuming not in the city, somewhere in the suburbs? It was hot yesterday too wasn't it? I was on a plane, but I think I remember it being pretty hot when I left.

Wow Jim, great time and what a great last mile! I'm with kmwest, 19:30 looks like it is in reach for you. A little more speed work, a little more aggressiveness at the start and bam -- sub 20!

Nope, not the suburbs. Started and ended right near Comerica Park. Here's the route: http://www.karmanos.org/detroitracef...t_RouteMap.jpg
And yeah, it was hot as shit out! lol

km - Thanks. It's gotta be chip timed!
Jeff - I've got a little more than a month to go. We'll see!

Nice work!!! Very strong finish. I always do the opposite in 5K's - too fast on the front end, dead on that final mile.
You should put yourself pretty close to the front at the race starts to avoid at least some of the crowding. I wish race directors would announce well before the race starts about self-seeding. OTOH, I've run in races where the RD does make an announcement, and people still put themselves in the front to get run over. Go figure!

Just west of Waukesha, if you are familiar with the area. We're in the far west suburbs of Milwaukee, Wales to be exact.

That has been my modus operandi. I think that's why I don't like 5K's too much. They hurt!
As for the crowding, I did position myself near the front (took me about 5 or 10 seconds to get to the line. There were just so many people mis-seeded that it didn't matter much. I did hear an announcement as a matter of fact. What are you gonna do? I'd be really pissed if I had missed my PR by just a few seconds or if it was a goal race.

Wild! Usually no one's ever heard of this place. If you're looking for good custard (bad for any kind of diet), check out Leduc's.

Nice Race time Jim especially considering the starting crowd.
