Jim - great report and great run! What are you trying to improve as far as pacing?? I think a + 1:00 positive split is about as good as it gets. I think having some fade at the end shows that you put in a strong effort and didn't hold back to keep a steady pace all the way through. Congrats - I know this one makes up for the extreme pain at the end of the previous one!

Thanks, Dave. I'm pleased with the pacing. I just guess I hoped I would have a little more left in the tank after 20.
edit: I should be happy with the pacing. I was in 281st place at the halfway mat. I finished 198th. I passed 83 people the second half, many of whom looked to be feeling the way I did in Grand Rapids.

Oh wow! Awesome report, Jim. I was impressed b your times, but after reading the report, it looks like you really ran a great race. Congratulations on the PR!

Yeah, I'd say crashing in the second half is the norm! If you ever figure out the secret of feeling great after 20 miles, let me know. Again, I think if you felt like the last several miles were a piece of cake, it would have meant that you left something out on the course...and you probably would have finished slower, since to do that you would have needed your pace throughout the whole thing to be slower. +1 or 2 minutes sounds perfect.

Great race report! It sounds like you did everything right from the training to the race. It must be a great feeling to pull it off as both a physical and mental exercise and hit your goal dead on. Congratulations!

Jamie - Thanks! As for Detroit, I would like to do it, but I need to start saving money for it! The early, early registration fee for the 1/2-M is $50 and the full is $75! It just goes way up from there as the race gets closer.
Dave - You're right.
Jeff - Thanks! I'm still on cloud nine. I can't wait for that feeling when I eventually get my BQ.

Congrats on a well run race! I'm excited for you. And as far as Detroit goes.... I haven't ruled it out.. entirely.

Thanks, Dee! If I do run Detroit, it will probably just be the half. At the moment I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to commit to training for a fall marathon. I'm also still looking to do Park2Park again.

June 16 - Race for the Cure 5k, Detroit. I got a free registration from a CPA firm over there so I thought it would be a good thing to do and network at the same time.
June 30 - Reed's Lake Run 10k. I don't think I've ever run a 10k.
July 15 - Sparta Apple Run. Hometown race. I hope to break 20:00 for this one. It's been really hot for it the last couple years, though.

Great Job Jim. Congrats on the new PR and putting in another great race. Nice way to kick off the Memorial Day Weekend.
Now on to the short fast stuff.

 Thanks, Gregg.
----------------
29MAY07
scheduled: NOTHING!
actual: 2.05 recovery miles
I'm not sore but my legs are sure still tired for some reason. I have exams today and tomorrow, but on Thursday I'll put some time into coming up with a new plan and June mileage goal. I really want to get back to the gym, do the faster, shorter run stuff, incorporate trail running and some crossfit stuff in, too.

Holy crap! My log was half way down the third page! Lots of new logs.
-----
31MAY07
scheduled: NOTHING!
actual: 4.4 miles
34:25 (7:49 avg pace)
Not a bad little run to wind out the month and reach my mileage game goal. I should have started a little earlier than 11:00 this morning because it was quite warm.
I'm a little closer to deciding on a new training program. I think I'll try to run 3-4 days a week and lift 2-3 times. One of the runs will be a trail run. One will be tempo or repeats at the track. The other two will be an easy 4-5 miler and a longer weekend run. My lifting program will either come from Chad Waterbury or NROL.

Newman's 61 day challenge has generated a bunch of new logs as well as having some old ones ressurected. Now you either post or plummit.

You really need to learn how to piss through your shorts leg. It's not public indecency if nobody sees your member!
Solid race. I see you're learning some of my race tactics . And with only 65 seconds more for the latter half, you did a good job pacing yourself.
Congrats on hitting all your goals!

Holy crap! My log was on page three again! I better do some shit to keep it on the front page. Actually, I have done a little. After I bailed out of a trail run on Saturday only 1.5 miles in I went to the gym and lifted for the first time in ages. I'm going to give the NROL break-in plan a whirl to get me back in the swing of things. I've worked out a combination running/ lifting plan that from the outset look pretty intense but is about what I was doing before starting marathon training last summer/fall. Here's the gist of it:
Monday: lift and 3 mile easy run
Tuesday: track workout (probably 400s)
Wednesday: lift and 3 mile easy run
Thursday: 4 mile tempo run
Friday: lift
Saturday: long run of 8-10 miles (probably on the trail)
Sunday: rest or the CF Barbara workout to evaluate any progress
This will pretty much be how it goes. There will be some juggling due to a trip at the end of the month and school, etc. I'm not sure if I'm going to do 2 or three weeks of the break-in. I'll have to see how I'm doing. I'll go into CW's TBT or ABBH (loved that program) afterwards.
I also have to get my diet in order. I may be the only person in the history of the world to gain weight while training for a marathon. I did get down to the mid-170s a few months ago but, as of yesterday, have ballooned to 192! It was so easy for me to use the excuse of all the running to eat like a pig. That's got to change. I don't have the will power to be super anal about macro nutrient percentages and all that jazz, I just have to pay way closer attention to portion size and eat more slowly so my body realizes that it's full. I generally eat decent, not too much crap, but I guess I could use some more veggies. I'll be spending a little more time in the diet/nutrition sub-forum.
Here's my Saturday workout:
02JUN07
~1.5 miles run on trail
NROL Break-in program
sets x reps x weight
Workout A:
Straight sets:
Squat – 2 x 15 x 135
Superset:
Lunge – 2 x 15(ea) x 45
DB row, elbow out – 2 x 15(e) x 45
Superset:
Push-Up – 2 x 20 x BW
Swiss-Ball Crunch – 2 x 20 x BW
I'm a bit sore, though not nearly as sore as I was after trying out Barbara a few weeks ago. Good stuff, though. I'm back to my old gym, the one I first started at 4 years ago.
