Hey, you're racing in Madison on Saturday, right? Careful running on those trails and turf if it's wet!!

Maybe if I take a tumble on a grassy slope it would improve my time.

I would take a whole week off from running (or at least 5 days). Three days is not a lot of post-marathon recovery. If you really feel compelled to exercise, I'd probably do some upper body weight training and just give the legs a lengthy rest.

3 mile EASY run
Well, I had to rescue my traiing log from the depths of page two, so I went out to get a couple miles in. I had a serious case of cabin fever going on. Like I said, I went real easy and even stopped at the gym for a while to talk with a couple of the girls working there.
I still haven't decided what lifting plan to follow but I found a post-marathon running schedule to follow the next few weeks. Just as well, my gym membership expired sometime during my ramped up running when I stopped hitting the weights. I'm going to check out the great new Y that is right next to school. Next semester I'll be going to the main campus and will be able to work out there for free. I thought there was a gym at the downtown campus but there isn't.

There are some great pics there, Jim. You can almost feel the relief on those ones of you crossing the finish line! My fave though is 15639-214-011. You just look so cool and "in the zone" in that one. You should use it as your avatar when you get tired of the medal (as if ... ) Thanks for sharing, man.

Those are good pics!!! And there are a lot of them. The photographers must like you!! Yeah the finishing line photo definitely has a "Thank God" look to it!!! Are you going to order prints of some?? I didn't order any of my Boston Marathon photos because they were all so bad, with me looking down in almost every one.

Thanks, guys. Seeing this was my first marathon, I just might bite the bullet and order a couple. They aren't cheap, though.

5.67 mile EASY run
What a perfect day to run. About 50 degrees, little breeze, and sunny. I felt pretty good considering I kind of overdid the celebrating thing on Friday night and has a pretty bad case of the brown-bottle flu yesterday.

Been watching you...
I only just joined JP because of e-mail troubles, but I figured I'd better admit that I've been watching this thread. I ran the GR half last week, so with you I was watching the weather and obsessing about what to wear
I rode the section of the full marathon between the Grand River bridge and Grandville today on bikes with my husband and son. It was quite pretty, and we enjoyed seeing the two railroad bridges. I didn't even notice that old wooden trestle during the race! You run there all the time, I'm sure, so you probably knew all about it.
Anyway, as someone who is trying to balance lifting (much less!) and running (MUCH slower!) I'll continue to keep an eye on your log.

Thanks, Dee! It's great that you've been checking in! Keep doing so. I've said it before, it is great motivation knowing that people are checking up on my progress reading this log.
I've actually have only run that area a few times. Once as my last long training run a few weeks before the marathon, the 5/3 River Bank Run, and, of course, the marathon.
If you've got any ideas on the lifting and running combo thing let me know. I'm still trying to figure out what to do this off season before my next marathon training cycle.
BTW- have you or will you be running the RiverBank this year? The timimg may not be great for me but I definitely recommend it.

I'm trying NROL..
I only just started using free weights last August. I started New Rules of Lifting Break-In in September. I enjoy doing it - I want a serious program, not just a lame circuit on the machines. But it did slow me down, so I concentrated on running in October. I was back in the gym last Thursday doing NROL break-in again, and only today can I walk without staggering I'll have to figure out how to keep some strength training going in the month before my next long race.
..Which will be the River Bank Run. I like having a long race to train for. I was in no shape for even the 5K last year. I'm looking forward to the 25K this year. So my goal this winter is to keep some base so that I can begin training for the River Bank Run in March.

5.67 mile run
41:55 (7:24 avg pace)
Wow is my pacing off, or what? This was my first run back that I wanted to run at a decent pace not just to go out and jog. I ran the first mile at about an 8:00. I then kept at what I thought was an even pace. This will show you how much I know:
1.05 miles - 8:03 pace
2.15 miles - 7:26
3.80 miles - 7:18
4.88 miles - 7:14
5.67 miles - 7:45 (slowed down because my shoe came untied)
No wonder I felt like my legs were still tired. I was going to do a short tempo run tomorrow. Guess I don't need to now. Felt great again today and I didn't need to bundle up. Every day we have like today was, this time of year, I consider a real gift.

Nice pics Jim. Just one question... where is everybody else? If I were you I'd order them all then tell your grand kids, 40 years from now, you smoked the rest of the field. I think 15639-457-035 is a great picture. You look really happy.
Good to see you itching to run again and good luck finding a lifting/running routine.

Thanks, Jeff.
Everybody else? There's a slight difference between NYCM and the Grand Rapids Marathon. LOL 37,000 runners spread outover 26.2 compared to 700.
As for that pic, I like it, too. I think it shows a good combination of joy, relief and pain. That was one of the pics I was going to order, as well as the one I'm using as my avatar and one of the finish line pics.

My far-too-late comments:
1) Good work, especially pushing through the quad pain. A lot of people would have quit.
2) Nonconsensual drafting is justification for punching someone in a race. Common law, I think.
3) The winter is a good time to regain strength and size lost during your race training. Unless you have a big race coming up early in the spring, you can pare back to 2-3 hard running workouts weekly and still maintain most of your speed, not to mention help prevent overuse injuries.

3.12 mile run
21:23 (6:51 avg pace)
3 laps around my neighborhood
7:33
7:00 (untied shoe issue again)
6:49
It was one of those days. I was going to not do anything after school today but I just needed the fresh air. It was dark by the time I started so I just did a few laps around my block. For the hell of it I measured it on mapmyrun. It's actually a little over a mile per circuit. All this time I thought it was a mile even. So, I've got my own 5k route now.

Thanks a lot, km. No big race planned for early spring, though I'm going on the assumption I'll be running at least a half (though hopefully the full) in Louisville or someplace around the end of April.
