What will I wear? And the biggie- should I run 6.2 miles today or 7?
You'd think that school would help me keep my mind occupied, right? Nope. I can't even concentrate on that. The 2 exams I took this week left a little to be desired.

Boy are you a mess! Go for a walk, do some foam rolling, do something other than a long run to calm down that nervous energy! If you've been following a schedule stick to it. Remember a professionally designed program is built on experience. Trust it.
BTW, I'm going to bookmark this post so I can revisit it when I'm in the same position a week from now.
And for pace, everything I've read suggests starting out conservative. To start a bit slow and finish strong is better then starting strong and finishing on your hands and knees. Also, remember to ENJOY the race. For me, I have time goals but if I blow them I don't care, however if I make the race a miserable experience instead of enjoying it as a reward for all my hard work I will never forgive myself.

Good luck on your race! Sorry to be a late-comer to the party, but I which marathon are you doing. I went back through a couple of pages and couldn't find it. Regardless, sounds you like you are going to do well. I'm attempting my second marathon in December in Charlotte, NC.

I'm doing my local race- Grand Rapids. Small and close by. Good for my first. Good luck with Charlotte.
Just checked the countdown timer: 9 days 15 hours 17 minutes.

Thanks, Dave. We'll see how it goes. I'm curious to see how my long distance training affects my 5k time as compared to all the shorter, fast stuff I did this summer to bring home that 20:02. I'm going to go for it, though.

Sorry to disappoint GG. Hope you didn't put any $$ down.

21OCT06
Laker Homecoming 5K
I'm not sure how to explain my performance or results on this one. I'll start by saying that it was nearly perfect running weather this morning- about 45-50 at the start. I ran about 15 minutes as a warmup in pants and my jacket and was sweating like a pig. I decided to go with just shorts and short sleeves. One thing about warming up like that and then changing- you feel a lot lighter.
Not much to say about the course or race. It was pretty much a tour of the Grand Valley main campus. Man, is it beautiful. Anyways, it was funny to listen to some of the students beforehand talking about how much they had to drink last night. I felt like it this morning. I had a very crappy night's sleep.
I talked with a guy that I recalled seeing at that half-M I ran last week. I didn't see anyone else I recognized. Well, after getting my bib and warming up we were off not so promptly at about 9:05.
splits:
mile 1 - 6:12 ~ I'm not feeling it today. My legs are really tight.
mile 2 - 6:29 ~ Looks like 20:00 is out of the picture the way I'm slowing down.
mile 3 - 6:45 ~ We did a lap aroud the track at the football stadium. I'm really hurting right about now.
mile 3.1 - :42 ~ Thank God, I'm done.
Final watch time: 20:08 (6:29 avg pace)- 6 seconds off a PR. sub-20:00 still eludes me.
After waiting around 45 minutes for results to be posted, (no chip timing ) they did the overall awards and told those of us that were remaining to check the results posted to see our times and if we placed in our age groups. I figured there was an outside chance I placed so I went and checked. What I saw was quite a surprise: My official time was 19:59.52 (6:26 avg pace), good for second in my age group. I got a coffee cup and a 6 pack of GU.
There you have it. I'm not sure that I really believe that official time. I think, to totally feel better about it, I'm going to have to run a sub-20 in a chip-timed race. However, I still might claim a sub-20:00 if anyone asks.

Congrats on the run! Sounds like it was a great day. You should be able to smash 20 next season, if you can get that close on a marathon training regimen.

Good job, Jim!!! Congrats on the age group bling!!!
The fading looks like you just started out a little bit too fast. It's hard not to do that, especially in a 5K. Don't ask me how not to do it, because I ALWAYS go out too fast in 5K's and 10K's!!!!

Dave, thanks. I really like the fact that my bling is actually useful! Medals are cool and all, but you can never have too many coffee cups.
As far as tha fading, I don't know how to pace a short race like a 5K. I can pretty much settle in after a mile or two at my race pace for the longer stuff. However, that's way too late in a 5K! I just go out pretty hard and hope to hang on. Check out the comparison from my July 5k and today:
July 15
mile 1 - 6:07
mile 2 - 6:33
mile 3.1 - 7:20 (6:40 pace)
October 21
mile 1 - 6:12
mile 2 - 6:29
mile 3.1 - 7:27 (6:46 avg pace)
Pretty damn close, huh? And if you shave off those 8 mystery seconds from the end it's even freaky close!

Those are freaky close!!
Like I said, I do the same thing... especially in 5K's. My lap times for my PR 5K in May 2005 were 5:36, 6:13, 7:15 for final 1.1 (6:35 pace)!! I wanted to die before that race finally ended!!

Wow, sub-20 is smoking. Congrats on your race, and the hardware. You gotta like any hardware, no matter what it is!

Good 5k time. And personally I think your time for a non-chip timed race is better, because you can always say that it took a precious 0.3s to cross the starting line!

Thanks, km. I'll take the time, for sure. But, because of the discrepancy between times, I wish this was the one time I didn't wear my watch. lol
