John- I really appreciate it. And, as I alluded to in my entry for today's run, I owe many of those miles to you and the MMMM.

In all honesty, I obsess over milestones like that as well. There's something about seeing that one number lower on an average pace or finish time, even though it's completely arbitrary!!

I think your Monday 13-miler looked really good. Your training plan may have called for slightly faster pace, but it's not accounting for a max effort 1/2-Marathon just two days prior. It's harder to recover from a 1/2-M at race effort than a typical long run at greater distance.

Well, I'm really, really feeling unmotivated today. I just watched the Twins get spanked to go down 2-0 and as much as baseball doesn't matter, it's got me bummed. How stupid. I'm considering moving everything back a day, anyways, because I'm not doing my long run until Sunday. I got an e-mail from the race director today saying that he and the race staff are running 22 miles of the marathon course on Sunday. It just so happens that is my planned distance for this weekend.

So I think I will just take it easy today and get all my homework for the week accomplished tonight and pick up my speedwork tomorrow (which I think I'll do along the river in Grand Rapids as a change of pace and scenery) and do an easy 12 on Friday after school.

This will screw up my partying for Pulaski Days this weekend, but I really should stay away from the beer the next few weeks and save it for celebrating after the race.

Thanks for the info, Jim. I bet ol' Casimir would be happy to know that beer-drinking is still going on in his name in 2006.

Man! Where is my log going to lead to next? After this history lesson I'll now cover month-end procedures and posting to ledger accounts.

I need to get my ass back to the gym. LOL

I've been thinking about another pair before the marathon. That settles it. I'm getting some this weekend. I'm going to try the new version of the Mizuno Wave Riders. I ended up liking the 8's. Hopefully the 9's will be as good.

What did you go with?

I got a new pair of my Asics DS Trainer XI's, which I have been using for over one year except for one period where I used Mizuno Wave Precisions.

And I bought a pair of Vasque Blur trail runners. I found them marked way down locally ($49.99 -- I almost ordered them online for $85 last week!!) and decided to go ahead and get them. They're a fairly lightweight neutral shoe for trail running/racing. Very comfortable!! I like!! These were my 40th B'day presents from my family.

How many miles do you generally get out of your shoes? Being a little heavier than your average runner, I seem to really notice some sore kness and hips after about 300 miles no matter the model shoe.

I believe I am around 400 miles on the pair I finished this morning. They were definitely done, although I have pushed other pairs longer. On this pair, I could tell that I had knocked the heel out of alignment a couple of weeks ago. I was starting to really notice that they were broken down on the last few runs... especially the downhills were starting to hurt. I usually wind up with some minor injuries if I go too long on a pair. Usually I hurt one of my calves.

Are the Wave Riders a cushioned shoe?? The Precisions were a lightweight trainer that were supposed to be good for people like me with high arches. I actually wore those in my PR marathon, but to me they really didn't feel very cushioned at all. I don't know that I would try those again for daily training, but I might try one of their shoes with more cushioning. Sometimes I think I'm too heavy for the Asics DS Trainer XI's for daily training.

Hey, I'm a history buff. S'all good, man!

You just gotta find a way to stop Dave talking about his damned shoes!

Jim loves to talk about running shoes. He has a running shoe fetish. It's kinda creepy.

It kinda is. I think I need to seek help. LOL

As far as the WRs, they are pretty lightweight and have a nice amount of cushioning. They are also classified as neutral which I believe is good for high arches. I don't necessarily have high arches, but I really ended up liking them, so I am leaning towards them again. Especially since I haven't been able to find anything else I really like.

The asics Gel landreths I'm wearing out right now seem to be lasting a little more. However, they feel heavier. Maybe a correlation?? I don't mind them, but I don't really want to race in them.

And please don't get me started in on those Nike Air Pegasus. Sheesh. I probably should have sized up at least half a size. I think my feet have swelled since buying them. They are too narrow for me.

Hey, Rob, I'm somewhat of a history buff myself. I momentarily thought about going for a degree in it, but wasn't quite sure what it would do for me. Luckily I found something else to study and can enjoy history on the side.
