27SEP06
scheduled: 12 miles with speedwork
actual:10.46 miles, easy
1:24:35 (8:05 avg pace)
splits:
3.68 miles - 31:00 (8:25)
6.78 miles - 24:45 (7:59)
10.46 miles - 28:49 (7:50)
Lately it is taking me several miles to really warm up and feel good. Today was no different. I wonder why this is. I also had to fight a pretty strong headwind for the first half today. It died out on my way back, of course. The rain also came down. But, after I loosened up I felt pretty good. In fact, as good as I've felt running since the first few miles of my long run on Saturday.
I was going to do 12 easy, but I just have too much homework and studying to do and needed to get back. Plus I'm going to say that I'm starting my mini-taper. Tomorrow I'll only do 5 or 6.

You're probably just stiff from running all of these double-digit distances so close together, and it takes a few miles to work that out!

Then I won't expect much out of my short run this afternoon.
31 days to go!

"Cograts on a great pro sports week as well all though the Vikings Bearly snuck that one out."
I was just looking at my pick um sheet for this week and I realized that the Bears snuck it out last week not your Vikings. Sorry man didn't mean to take a shot.

No biggie, G. I know you're just feeling smug because the Pack won.
My two favorite NFL teams: the Vikings and whoever is playing the Packers.

28SEP06
scheduled 13 miles @8:06
actual 5.66 miles
43:59 (7:46 avg pace)
Wow. Am I a slacker or what?? I feel guilty for not running over an hour.
This is the same run I did 2 weeks ago in prep for my 10 mile race. I ran it in 44:05.
Hopefully this is a sign and my race this weekend will be as successful as that one.

Have a great race, Jim!!! I'm sure you are going to destroy your previous 1/2-M time.
Unfortunately, though, your marathon will be a disaster since you deviated from your training plan yesterday!!! :p

Thanks, guys! Hope I have a good report to give you tomorrow. It's going to be chilly and rainy in the moring. I'm wondering what to wear.:p
GG- You're taking the Vikes? For some reason I'm still not sold on them this year. What's the spread? I hope you are getting some points! It's in Buffalo, outside- I hope Chester plays out of his mind.
Jamie- Go Twins.:p
Rob- Hopefully they'll get some pics of me. It's not a large race by any stretch- Fewer than 100 ran it last year; therefore, more opportunities to photograph me.
Dave- I am so screwed. lol

Well, for that kind of weather, I recommend a sleeveless Iron Maiden half shirt and a pair of faded jeans shorts.

A quick post to let everyone know that I'm done and things went great. I ran a 1:32:10. A 6 minute PR! I'll do a race report later today. I'm taking the kiddo out to have some father-daughter time.

1:32:10 (7:02 avg pace)
splits and notes:
mile 1 - 6:54
mile 2 - 6:53
mile 3 - 6:48 (Finally settle in and loosen up.)
mile 4 - 7:00
mile 5 - 7:01
mile 6 - 6:57 (These next few splits amazed me every time I clicked my watch.)
mile 7 - 6:57
mile 8 - 6:57
mile 9 - 6:59 (Shortly after this we turned into the wind til the end.)
mile 10 - 7:06 (1:09:36 About 40 seconds off my 10 mile PR race 2 weeks ago)
mile 11 - 7:09
mile 12 - 7:07
mile 13.1 - 8:17 (7:28) (Ugh. Not an especially strong finish.)
Why can't weathermen be wrong every once in awhile? It was, as predicted, cold and rainy out this morning. It was in the upper 40's and drizzly at the start, and as we weren't too far from Lake Michigan, a little breezy, too. Oh well, enough bitching, this was a great day!
I felt great when I woke up this morning. A friend of mine drove us to the race (about an hour away) and kept an eye on my daughter. It was cool to know that my daughter wanted to come to the race to see me. I can't wait til her teenage years when I embarrass the hell out of her.
As usual, it took me a couple miles to feel good. I was able to knock out some very consistant splits, mostly due to a mostly very flat course. There were a couple rollers in there and one very steep hill about a quarter of a mile from the finish- luckily it was only about 20 feet long. It was like going up a short flight of stairs, though.
Throughout the race I stayed with the same guy about 20 feet behind him. As the race went on, I was thinking to myself how I would pick this guy off the last couple of miles. Also, as we went along, I could see a woman from my friend Laura's running team further ahead and fading. Each mile I got closer and closer to her. At the 9 mile mark or so, the guy I had been following passed her and found some other gear and took off. I talked to him later and he said he was taking it easy and really put the hammer down for a strong finish.
I caught up to the woman around 10 and stayed with her til about 12. About then, we turned a corner and I saw her look out the corner of her eye at me. That was it. She picked up her pace and I never could gain on her. I finished 10 seconds or so behind her. We talked for a while afterwards and I recognized her as a pretty well known and successful local racer.
There were no photographers out on the course, but my daughter took one of me as I neared the finish line. I'll have to get it developed (I'm still in the stone ages without a digital camera) and post it.
The stats:
28/140 overall
26/81 males
4/9 age group (no medal- and the third overall was in my group)
One last note: The sun came out and warmed up nicely during the awards ceremony. And I went with shorts and a long sleeve technical shirt.:p
