Hey, thanks for stopping in, Dman! Running is just something that has really grown on me. If I have the choice between running and lifting, I invariably will choose the run.

Hey, GG, I'm quite familiar with the hills out here. LOL. I get here to visit my aunt and uncle every couple months and after about a week my knees are screaming at me to get back home! They live out past Waukesha, so there is some nice scenery and rolling hills through the Kettle Moraine area I get to experience. A lot nicer than staring at soybean and cornfields for 18 miles.

8.46 mile easy run
1:05:53 (7:47 avg pace)

Wow. Taking two days off makes all the difference in the world. I felt so fantastic this morning. If I didn't know that I really needed an easy week I could have been tempted to do a few more miles I felt so good. The first couple miles I wasn't quite sure how it was going to go. My legs were kind of tired and tight. By the time I got to 6 I was in a great groove. The weather was perfect too. No wind or humidity with temps in the low 60s. Can't get much better. I love vacation.

That sounds like a great run and perfect conditions. I'll be there tonight!

5.5 mile run
43:58 (8:00 avg pace)

Ugh. This sucked. I was planning to do another 8 miler but this run sucked for so many reasons I quit after 5.5. There is no reason an easy run on vacation should have felt like this. Hopefully 8 tomorrow. This may also be the shortest run I've been on in quite a while, except for the couple times I went out to break in those Nikes.

8.46 mile run
1:05:32 (7:45 avg pace)

last two miles done in 13:32 (6:46 pace)

Much better run than Wednesday. I took it pretty easy until the last couple and ran those pretty hard. I'm happy with this. It'll be my last run til Monday, tomorrow is party day and Sunday is the drive home.

28AUG06

scheduled: 9 mile run @8:11

actual: 9.28 miles
1:10:59 (7:39 avg pace)

splits
1.11 miles - 8:40 (7:48)
2.14 miles - 7:50 (7:36)
3.10 miles - 7:16 (7:34)
4.64 miles - 11:43 (7:36)
6.65 miles - 15:36 (7:46)
8.12 miles - 11:08 (7:34)
9.28 miles - 8:42 (7:30)

Well, I'm back in the saddle again after a great vacation. I feel well rested and ready to go. I started classes today at my new school as well as got back on track with The Plan.

We had temps in the 60s and a light rain this afternoon. Felt wonderful. My legs felt fresh and I didn't feel like I put a lot of effort into this run even though the pace was about 5-10 seconds faster per mile than before vacation and a good 30 seconds faster than called for. Hopefully I don't feel too dead tomorrow because I took it too hard my first day back.

This week will pretty heavy on the miles topping out at about 46 or 47 after a 20 miler on Saturday. I also hope to get some lifting in as well.

29AUG06

power cleans
155 x 5
4 x 137 x 5

squats/ inverted row
4 x 135 x 8/ 4 x 10

DB bench
3 x 80s x 5
80s x 4

woodchops/ hanging leg raise
4 x 100 x 5/ 4 x 10

Wel, this was my first time in the gym in over two weeks and it sucked ass. I went from weak to very weak. I took it decidedly very easy on the squats because I didn't want to be too fatigued the next day running. As you'll see it didn't matter.

I think I will totally lay off squats for the remainder of The Plan unless it is a cutback week. Deads don't seem to affect my running nearly as much even though I normally do them the day before my long runs.

Another thing was that my allergies have really kicked up this week. I don't know what it is, but I've never had allergies until I moved to Michigan. Must be a combination of the humidity and vegetation. Whatever it is, I live for the day I can finally move from this god-foresaken state.

30AUG06

scheduled: speedwork: 8 miles including wu, cd; 3x1600 @6:26 w/800m jogs

actual: 9.28 miles easy run
1:16:46 (8:16 avg pace)

splits
1.11 miles - 9:07 (8:13)
2.14 miles - 8:16 (8:02)
3.10 miles - 7:53 (8:13)
4.64 miles - 12:46 (8:17)
6.65 miles - 17:03 (8:29)
8.12 miles - 12:10 (8:17)
9.28 miles - 9:28 (8:10)

Man, I felt like such crap today that I passed on speedwork. I never would have been able to do it. My allergies were still killing me, I was sore as hell from my workout the day before, and I, uhh, had some GI issues the previous 24 hours or so and was still feeling the effects from that- namely an upset stomach, with cramps, and dehydration.

The weights take a toll your first time back. Not to worry I am sure when you do your next bought of speed work you will be back up to par. Glad to hear you had a great vacation. My run this weekend is just West of where you were around the lakes and hillsides of Oconomowoc. I can't wait it sounds gorgeous.

I notice some drop off when I return after a rest week, but it goes away within a workout or two. Hang in there.

I'm going to attempt the speedwork today. We'll see how that goes. I am feeling a little better, though still a little sore.

Yeah, you'll be very close to where I was at. Enjoy the run.

Thanks, Mahler. I'm just a little discouraged. Hopefully my speedwork will go alright today.

I wouldn't be discouraged over missing the speedwork - you were feeling like crap!

Your workout was probably limited from the previous day's 9+ miler at a pace faster than planned... These things happen, especially now that you are getting into the portion of your marathon training plan with the most demanding workload.

Where are you going to move when you leave Godforsaken Michigan? San Francisco would probably be the best place to live for perfect running weather, but you'd have to spend a fortune on housing that would be a dump almost anywhere else.

Well , wherever I go, it won't be for several years. San Francisco was a really cool place the couple times I visited it. Killer hills for intervals. I really miss Colorado. However, most of my immediate family lives in New Hampshire so that would be a possibility. Or now North Carolina, because my Dad is taking a new job there and I get along great with him.

Michigan's not all that bad. I'm just in a bitchy mood right now and blaming the state seems as rational as anything. I mean the state is great. Short summers, freezing, nasty, long winters, horrible economy, my ex lives here, the Red Wings, etc. etc. etc.

Oh yeah, if I could choose a place to live with no concerns for being close to family, etc., I would go to Colorado or somewhere else in the Rocky Mtn West with somewhat tolerable Winters.

North Carolina is generally very nice... We lived for two years in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area and really enjoyed it.

I haven't seen much of Michigan - really only the western part from the Indiana border to Muskegon, of all places, where I had to go for a business trip. And Grand Rapids and its airport! I've also been to the Detroit Airport. LOL.

I just added up my total milege for the month. 175 miles! 20 runs for an average of 8.75 miles per run.

Oh, and 5 trips to the gym.

(My previous monthly high mileage was 143.5)
