In the recruiting station at which I work, we share the building with Army, Navy and Air Force personnel. Every morning I see soldiers in their cute Army PT shirts power-walking along the sidewalk. Yes, power-walking.
Be all you can be in an army of one, indeed. Hooah!

Get an edge on life!
I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and guess they're on some sort of profile. I wish they wouldn't power-walk in uniform, though. Just put on some regular sweats and go to the mall. Sheesh.
I can't believe how my legs are feeling. They don't seem tired or sore at all. I really should take an entire day off, but I'm tempted to do another short shoe breaking in run this evening after dropping my daughter off.

Nah, they're just fat.
Update: Now soldiers can do their PFT 2-mile racewalking. Before the start, they tell the proctor whether they're walking or running. If they choose walking, they have to keep one foot on the ground, etc (standard competitive walking rules). Then there are separate time standards for walkers and runners.
They can also do girl pushups, with their knees on the ground.
I'm not even kidding.

what's that about the army you have, and not the army you wish you had?

Next Sunday (8/13) will mark the 15 year anniversary of my first day of Basic Training. Much seems to have changed.

I see Army recruits virtually every day as recruiters file in and out of the building with the kids they're getting in. They're almost all fat, with clueless looks on their faces. Last week, I saw a recruiter sitting in his govcar while a recruit - in fake camo shorts and Army t-shirt - smoked a cig outside the car.
Disgusting, absolutely disgusting. The Marine recruits aren't much better, but they appear in somewhat better shape.

Nice work! I don't think you'll have any trouble jumping from 12.3 to 16 for your long run. You've already run a 1/2-M at race effort. The weird stuff seems to start happening around 20 miles!
This stuff you guys are posting about the recruits is scary. POWERWALKING?!?! Are they recruiting geriatrics??

07AUG06
scheduled: 9 mile run @ 8:16 pace
actual: 9.27 miles
1:11:41 (7:44 avg pace)
splits
1.10 miles - 8:59 (8:10)
2.13 miles - 8:00 (7:46)
3.09 miles - 7:21 (7:39)
4.64 miles - 11:34 (7:28)
6.65 miles - 15:40 (7:48) damn hills, but much, much better than the past couple runs!
8.49 miles - 14:08 (7:39) I took this split at a different spot for some reason.
9.27 miles - 5:59 (7:40)
What a great morning for a run. My legs felt so fresh after the day off! It was relatively cool, some humidity, but all in all a great morning for a run. It seemed like little effort went into it and look at my splits, especially the one between 4.6 and 6.6 (the hilliest part of the route) way faster than I've been! During the run I was thinking how amazing it was that 9 miles was now my regular run distance. 82 days until the marathon!

3.44 mile run
27:45 (8:04)
I had a "date" this afternoon and didn't feel very motivated to go to the gym by the time I got home this evening. So I decided to take advantage of the great weather (sorry Dave :p) and go for a quick easy run. Well, something happened. About 2 miles in I got all lght-headed and felt like I would pass out. This has never happened to me before. I hoping that it's just because I hadn't eaten since lunch. I was all goose-bumpy and cold and my body felt jittery. I actually stopped and sat down for awhile. After about ten minutes I felt a little better and completed the run. Weird I feel fine now, espescially after eating. It's got to be that I was hungry.
8 miles with 5 at tempo pace of 7:00 tomorrow. Man, I hope I'm up to it.

Yeah, that sounds like low blood sugar. That's what you get for being a wuss and running in pleasant weather! :p Next time just end your date early. I'm sure she won't mind if you choose a pre-run snack over her!!

Just tell her that you should time sex so that you fall asleep right on time for 8 hours of sleep before an early morning run. If that sounds reasonable to her, then you have someone who understands your priorities.

scheduled: 8 mile tempo run 1.5 mile w/u; 5 miles @ 7:01; 1.5 miles c/d
actual: 8.32 miles
1.41 miles w/u 11:37 (8:14)
5.44 miles tempo 38:07 (7:00)
1.46 miles c/d 12:14 (8:23)
splits for tempo portion
first 2.72 miles - 18:42 (6:52)
return 2.72 miles - 19:25 (7:08)
I'm freakin' psyched about this one- but I sure am wiped out right now! Why is it so much easier for me to keep a 7:00 pace in a race rather than a training run? Gorgeous weather- a little warmer than what I've run in lately. This is probably because I ran at 10:30 this morning and most of my recent runs have been in the early morn. No lightheadedness, either. I ate a banana about a half hour before running and had a pretty big bowl of oatmeal before leaving for my first class.
easy 8 tomorrow as well as it's the last day of class, other than my philosophy final next Tuesday!

Ah. Sorry if my post was out of line, I was trying to be "funny." I typically fail.
And nice work on the tempo run! And everybody does better in races than training runs... c'mon, that's why it's a "race"...

Wow. Sweat. Passing out. Sex. This place is getting pretty steamy, Jim. You'd better watch out or JP will be giving you an R rating.
