That's so wrong!!!!

Thanks for all the posts, guys. I just got done with the test, and it was much harder than it should have been. Four of the pieces that were eligible for the listening (15 overall, 10 on the test) had lyrics to them. He only played one. I know that I got seven right, but the other three sounded like they could have been any number of three different ones, so I hope that I at least got a couple of them right. I did pretty well on the multiple choice, but at this point I would be satisfied with a B after thinking I could get an A.

Did my stretching and stuff today and played catch. Threw well, popped the painkillers (ibuprofen, calm down) and feeling pretty good.

Back in the gym tomorrow and I can't wait.

Good news: I worked out today.

Bad news: I felt like crap and was thisclose to puking; not because of the workout.

Anyway

Wednesday, May 3

Single Leg Air Humps
2x12

Pushups
2x15

Diagonal Lunges
2x12 @ 10 (EH)

Front Squats
3x8 @ 95
Got real low and felt the stretch in my hip flexors

Bent Over Rows
3x10 @ 115

I had a headache and because it was pouring down rain this morning I didn't venture out to eat breakfast. I had a bag of Goldfish crackers before I worked out and popped three ubprofen. The crackers must not have filled me up enough, because I immediately had a stomachache accompanying my headache. It came on right during the front squats, and I barely made it through the bent over rows.

Walked home quickly thinking I was going to barf in the bushes, and almost puked in the shower. Went straight to bed, then almost puked again 45 minutes later. I woke up about a half hour ago, still with a little bit of a headache, but starving. I need food now...... and I have to write my story and watch "House."

Those were pretty funny, LD.

Nick, you don't want to hear my stories of listening exams. Renaissance had something like 45 pieces, 20th Century was 50 pieces, and Medieval was 60. Each of those was a one-semester survey course. Did well on the first two. Medieval I think I got 27%. I only managed to pass that class with a good paper and a slightly better than mediocre written exam.

Rest up, recover, and next time eat a decent breakfast. You'll need all your brain power for those other exams.

That would absolutely suck. I cannot recognize music without words. With words, no problem; but without I am screwed.

Better workout today. Much better.

Friday, May 5 (The last day of classes!!!!!)

Dynamic shoulder stretches before and after workout

Single Leg Air Humps
4x8

Close Grip Pushups
4x8

Planks
2xMax Effort
No clue how long exactly, I just went until I fell over

Diagonal Lunges
2x6 @ 20 (EH)

Front Squats
4x6 @ 110
Did a pretty good job of keeping my back straight with the heavier weight. I have to mentally remind myself to go straight down.

Bent Over Rows
4x6 @ 140
The last rep on the final two sets was an almost, didn't quite get the full range of motion.

I was in the rack in the middle and the two on the sides of me both had curlers. Ugh. Squat Rack Curler sandwich.

Despite today being the last day of classes, I am not out of the woods yet today. I have a stats final at 5:30 (for which I have done, oh maybe 30 minutes of studying). I then get to go home for a few days tomorrow and come back and take three finals on Wednesday, then I am finished.

Sunday, May 7

Dynamic shoulder stretches

Romanian Deadlifts
3x8 @ 155

Just goofing around with those before I ran

HIIT
5 minute warmup @ 3.5
4 rounds; 1 minute @ 10, 2 minutes @ 6.5
5 minute cooldown

If I would do these on a more consistent basis, then I would be able to get back to five intervals again. But with the nice weather, and being home, I think my motivation is back. It definitely helps knowing the people at the gym because they can and will hold you accountable.

I'm looking for some big progress from now until the end of summer.

Monday, May 8

Dynamic shoulder stretches before and after workout

Single Leg Air Humps
3x10

Squats with arms extended
3x8 @ +25

Explosive Pushups (as fast as possible up)
3x10

Front Squats
3x8 @ 95

Bent Over Rows
3x12 @ 105

Lunges
2x10 @ 20 (EH)

Planks
3x45 seconds

Good workout today. I need to figure out an exact periodization plan for this, but my head is spinning with the tests coming up, so that can wait for Thursday. I may go back to back Thursday and Friday, because I am studying and going back to school tomorrow and my tests are Wednesday, not to mention I will be returning home for good.

Nick,
Great to see you back in the game.
One piece of advice. Step away from the Goldfish crackers.

I can't identify with the music test, since I am usually able to ID most pieces with one or two opening notes or chords. When I went to college, my friends used to have me test them while we had breakfast on the morning of an exam. I could hum most pieces from memory. Oddly enough, I never took music appreciation since it presented no challenge or new information as far as I was concerned. My wife is always amazed because we can be in a crowded mall, with noise all around, and I can identify what is playing in the background. With a close listening of a classical piece, I can often identify a particular orchestra or a particular style of a conductor.

I've actually gotten the guts to go out and do some 4 mile + runs over the course of the last couple weeks, but I haven't logged them. I need to go get that bike and start riding it now that summer is here, and I think I may go run tomorrow night after lifting tomorrow afternoon. I also need to go get a foam roller.

You need to keep us informed when you are doing those things! It looks like things are going well with the corrective training. Do you feel much different from all the mobility and corrective stuff you have been doing?

So, school is out. Now it is really time to kick it into high gear and get that Shallow and Vain Journey moving at breakneck speed. No excuses, my friend.

Yes, I do. Keeping my shoulders back when I sit is now, after three weeks of conscious effort, second nature. My hips and glutes are stretching out easier, and while I am nowhere near back squats anytime soon, I am closer than I was.

And you're right, I should log those runs. I just go out, sometimes late, and go run, and then go to sleep so I forget to log it.

John- You are exactly correct. No excuses now.
