Re: S2B plus, making a better Buk
Thanks for the support and well wishes guys.
Things haven't been too bad since my last update. I was in quite a bit of pain yesterday, but today and the few days previous haven't been too bad. Those first few days were complete mysery.
Monday afternoon I went to the Chiropractor to talk about my hip(which is still causing quite a bit of pain) and back. He is a very knowledgable, experienced, and responsible guy. He is the chiropractic physician for all Virginia Tech athletes, and I feel very comfortable going to him. His prognosis is a tear of the rectus abdominus. He believes that this is capable of causing refered pain in my hip also. He told me to continue planned tests from my doctor, but to bring up his findings.
Tuesday morning I had a Hepatobiliary test. What they do here is IV in a radioactive tracer that will collects in the gallbladder. My uptake was very good, visualization of the gallbladder took about 9 minutes. After the tracer is taken in by the gallbladder, they IV in a virtual cheeseburger and fries(a synthetic hormone that tells the body you just ate a fatty meal). Then they measure the discharge from the gallbladder over the next 30 minutes. 35% ejection is the lower limit, up to 75% is expected. My ejection fraction was less then 2%. This means either they injected a virtual salt water rather than a virtual cheeseburger, or my gallbladder is on vacation. These results are something that they haven't seen or heard of before. My only other symptoms are pain and elevated bilirubens. A completly non-working(no obstructions - evident by other tests and uptake) gallbladder is not expected in a young healty person.
I met with the doctor and the current plan is to repeat the gallbladder/virtual cheeseburger test next Thursday. A non-working gallbladder should be removed because of the likleyhood of infection. He also thinks that I did not tear my abdominals beacuse of the mobility I had on Tuesday, but I think he is used to working with 70 year old patients with kidney, gallbladder and liver disease, not 27 year old athletes.
So could I have developed multiple conditions at the same time, did one cause the other, did one injury lead to the discovery of an existing condition? I am still accepting of the idea that one or both prognosises is wrong. The doctor said that my gallbladder should not affect my activity or exercise. Obviously a torn abdominal would. I have been eating fairly low fat, except for the popcorn, since yesterday. Yesterday's pain was the day after a high fat diet and a little amount of exercise. If I am feeling halfway capable tomorrow, I am going to play volleyball and hit the gym. I will see what that does to my abdominal and hip pain, and go from there on weither to persue further investigation into an abdominal tear before my next gallbladder test.
Again, thanks for the support guys, and don't worry. I am expecting to be up and running again very soon.

Re: S2B plus, making a better Buk
Hey take it easy Buk. Don't hit it hard too soon. I've done that before with injuries and regretted it.
Maybe go to a different doc for another opinion on your gall bladder?

Re: S2B plus, making a better Buk
Buk, keep hanging in there and don't push it too soon! This sounds like the pits. I can understand your skepticism about the two different diagnoses and the improbability that two different things happened to you simultaneously. I'll keep rooting for a muscle tear that will heal fairly quickly and rooting against the bile duct problem.

I don't want to pile on. But take it easy for a while. Get well, then get stronger.

Re: S2B plus, making a better Buk
Damn dude I haven't checked your log out in a couple days and I come to find all this. Good luck with everything man, I hope everything comes out all right.
If that hip pain keeps up, you might look into trying some ART. Its amazing for muscle problems.

Re: S2B plus, making a better Buk
Thanks again guys, but you all know it is impossible for me to sit idlely around. I have decided that it cannot be a muscle tear. I have been thinking about going and getting checked out by and ART guy, and my hip may push me over the edge. The actual pain feels more like a nerve issue than a muscle problem, but I would still imagine that he would be able to help stear me towards some relief.

Official weigh in: 192 pounds
2nd Annual Virginia Tech Strongman Competition
The doctor said that activity and exercise should not affect my condition. I played volleyball yesterday and the movement did not cause any pains, so I thought I might as well go for it. I am guessing at this point that I do not have and abdominal tear.
7 competitors in the Novice division. I finished 6th, and was a ways from 5th. There were no weight limits in the novice division, and a few non-novice heavy weights dropped down just so there would have more than one person to compete against in ther division.
Farmers Walk
180 pounds per hand, 100 feet, turn around at 50 feet.
5th place, 75 feet.
Only one drop was allowed, distance was taken as the second drop if the distance wasn't completed. The weight slipped at about 30 feet, I regrouped, made a good turn and accelerated as my grip was failing. Going in, I was a little worried that I might score a zero on this one.
Log Press
160 pound log, press for reps in 60 seconds
7th place, 0 reps
I expected this to be my strongest event? I failed to estimate how much harder a log is to press than a bar. I was unable to transfer any leg drive into the log to get the press started. I also noticed a similar weekness the other day doing dumbell thrusters versus barbell thrusters, with the dumbells, I was barely getting any of my leg power into the press. I wsa very dissapointed after this one - I need to find a log to pratice on.
Very Thick Bar Dead Lift
350 pounds, lift for reps in 60 seconds
6th, 4 reps
Strategy error on this event, otherwise I think I could have captured 5th with 3 more reps. While warming up, I got talked into trying to pull sumo. It felt pretty good at the biggest warmup weight so I gave it a shot. I wasted a lot of energy and time trying to get a sumo lift. Switched to a conventional stance and banged out 4, but I wore myself out. It was cool though, because after everyone thought I was going to post consecutive zeros, I switched grips and my first pull was pretty strong; that got the crowd going.
Tire Flip
650 pounds, 4 flips for time
5th, 20 seconds
I think I would have perfered this one to be longer, and for distance rather than "reps." I was still getting better rather than slowing down after 4 flips. Technique and experience help a lot with this one. Every time, I ran up to the tire, gripped it, then realized that I was too close and had to readjust. I could have been more aggressive with the tire, but I choose to go at it deliberatly and avoid making any big errors.
Atlas Stones
220, 240, 260, 315
4th, 3 stones, time unknown
I did fairly well with the stones. I got the crowd going with the relative ease of the first stone. Almost threw it from the floor to the platform. Second stone went up quickly. I had to lap the third stone, but still got it up without too much trouble. There was a huge jump in weight to the final stone, and all my stickey was gone. It didn't really move much at all for me. Some more stickey would have helped, but this one was still probably beyond me.
With some grip improvement and technique pratice, I think I can do quite a bit better next time. Volleyball is still my athletic persuit, but this was a really fun way to kill a Saturday morning; even if I never become a top contender. The atmosphere of strongman is really cool.

I don't even know what to say -- I'm blown away by your accomplishments! And I guess you are right about not having that muscle tear! I can't even imagine trying to lift one of those stones.

Re: S2B plus, making a better Buk
And a good rehab it was, thanks for the support guys. The contest was lots of fun.
I am still dissapointed about the log press. Monday I did some dumbell push presses. I figure that these simulate the log fairly well. I did tripples working up to 75 pound dumbells and felt pretty good about them. When I tried 80 pounders, it just wasn't happening. I lost the ability to transfer the power from my legs through the dumbells, at the exact contest weight. I think if the log press would have been 150 pounds I would have gotten 6 or 7. A little practice and a little more strength, and the 160 pound log should be an easy event.
