Dave,
All I can say is damn.
You have been such an inspiration that it hurts all of us when you are injured.
I'll second that.

Thanks, Bill! I am definitely inspired by you guys as well. In fact, it's really hard for me to read other people's logs right now, since I can't do much of anything myself... and the logs make me want to go do something!

Looks like I will be off the crutches all day today. I may need to bring one crutch for help in getting across streets quickly, but I may even forego that today. I think this weekend I'll be able to waddle downstairs and at least do some pullups, dips, etc.

Damn, Dave. You have to be pulling your hair out having to take it easy. Oh, wait...:p

Hang in there. I'm looking forward to seeing your workouts again to use as motivation.

LOL!!! Hey, I do have some hair. It's really short, though, and hard to pull out.

Much better today so far compared to yesterday. I'm even concentrating on trying to walk as normally as possible. My wife keeps calling me a penguin, though! But she did announce last night that she is not my mother and was not going to nag me about not using my crutches as the doctor said. What a woman!! I don't see why I need to use them if I am recovering and not aggravating the injury, and it really feels better when I move around and presumably loosen up the tendon. The doctor basically told me nothing - he's waiting for the followup visit, so he can lure me back for another expensive office visit.

After chatting with some guys on the Running Times forum, I'm even more convinced that the shoes are the culprit. I hope it's that easy to solve.

Great stuff. Good to hear the injury isn't too serious. Keep us posted on the crutch work.

Dave! I got a hint in another thread that you were injured and just came here to catch up.

Owie! IT band stuff really sucks! When I had it, I would still run and limp with every other step. Only thing that made the pain go away was to stop running. It comes back though...so you need to find out what the underlying issues are. I'd even pose some questions to Bill and maybe show him pics of you running/standing.

When I discovered the foam roller, OH MY did it hurt to use it on my IT band. I couldn't use full pressure. Now I can roll on it with both legs.

I'm no expert, but I doubt your shoes are the culprit...it's too immediate.

Heal and rest up quickly!!!

Thanks, Devildawg and Cappy!

Cappy - thanks for all of the input. The main reason that I suspect the shoes (I hope it's that easy) is that I had a sudden onset of this problem one week after I started using a new pair of shoes (a style I had not tried previously). I've never had even an inkling of this problem in the past. The shoe style I have been using for over one year apparently have a moderate amount of over-pronation control (they are for neutral to slight over-pronators), whereas the new ones I was using are completely neutral. Apparently, it's possible that the change in shoes could have affected my gait and caused this problem. I ran a really high mileage stretch for that first week with them as well. I'm hopeful it's the shoes as the easy thing to blame, but it may not be!

I had never foam rolled my ITB until this problem surfaced. I noticed that it is pretty painful as well, but along the mid thigh where I don't even have any pain. My pain is entirely around the outside of the knee. I'll definitely foam roll these in the future!

I'm completely off crutches and walking well with little pain. Some limping, but I think a lot of that is due to underuse of the leg the past week and not pain. I'm not sure when to attempt running again - it will definitely be cautious when I do!

shoes could be the icing, but probably not the cause, if you know what I mean.

My IT band hurts right in the middle of my thigh too. It runs the side of your whole thigh, so it's probably just pulling the most at your knee.

Cappy, I think you meant to say, "Why of course, it must be the shoes. Change shoes, and you will never have this problem again and will be running within the next two days!"

I did say that, but you were asleep dreaming at the time :p

Good luck! I hope it's the shoes, but having been there before, I'm not as easy to trick

My doctor just called... it's definitely the shoes! :p:p:p

SUN. 12.17.06
AM WORKOUT

-- Some stretching plus foam rolled the ITB -- OWWWWWW!!!!

A. CHIN-UPS: +25#: 7; 6; 5; 4

B. DIPS: +25#: 10; 8; 8; 7

C. SEATED DB MILITARY PRESS: 2x 50# DBs: 6; 5; 4; 4

D. SINGLE-ARM DB ROWS: 100#: 5 ea.; 5 ea.; 5 ea.; 5 ea.

E. KNEES-TO-ELBOWS: 18; 13

F. WEIGHTED SIT-UPS: +50#: 15; 15

G. BICYCLES: 40 ea. side; 40 ea. side

H. SWISS BALL PUSHUPS (feet on ball): 20; 14

-- Felt good to work out but also kind of rusty after 12 days of no workouts and 7 days doing absolutely nothing. I forgot how much harder seated military presses can be. I tried 120# with a barbell and gave up immediately -- switched to dumbells. I probably could have done standing presses, but I didn't want to risk stressing the ITB. Of course, there was certainly no more risk in stressing it that way than when I carried the 120# bar from the power rack back to its storage spot on the basement floor (didn't feel like taking the plates off first). Workouts never feel like workouts to me without some lower body stuff - it's hard for me to keep motivated through them. But I guess this is my chance to finally build a massive upper body with chicken legs on the bottom.

I have to go to work now.

Doctors are just really thoughtful around here. He didn't want me to worry and stress that it might be more than the shoes and was worried about my psychological health after Cappy's posts.

LMAO at your avatar!!! Bwahahahahahahaha!!!

Yeah, actually my doctor seemed completely bored with my tendon issue. I guess I should have crushed my leg with a sledge hammer or something before I entered his office. My followup appt is tomorrow afternoon, which will probably be a waste of time!

Glad to hear your doing better Dave.

You should ask Bill about some corrective strategies (he'll probably tell you to #1 stop running but anyway ). Do you have magnificent mobility? That has really helped with some of my issues.
