Oh yeah, I skipped running again this morning, as I could feel some twinges walking around when first out of bed. I think in the morning I will definitely give it a shot. The Saturday weather watch looks much brighter - now up to NINETEEN for race start!!! LOL!!! The thing is, it's supposed to be 19 for the low that morning, then well up into the 50's during the day. That means it's going to warm up dramatically during the race, maybe even to 50 degrees by 11AM. So I may wind up going with shorts, anyway. I'd rather be cold at first than hot later!

I sure hope that leg clears up for you by Saturday. In case I don't get back to you before Good Luck with your race.

Thanks, G! It should be fine, although I can still feel some twinges tonight. So I may skip yet another day of running... not that I would do anything heavy duty at this point anyway. I'll likely do some short runs Thurs and/or Fri to make sure my first running steps in over a week aren't when the gun goes off on Sat.

TUES. 12.5.06
PM WORKOUT

A. BB SHOULDER PRESS: 120#: 6; 5; 4; 4

B. DB BENCH PRESS: 80# ea. hand: 4; 5; 3; 3

C. SINGLE-ARM DB ROWS: 100#: 6ea.; 6ea.; 6ea.; 5ea.

D. DIPS: +50#: 3; 3; 3; 3

I was still pretty sore from Sunday's CrossFit adventure. I'm bored with my homespun workouts and may try to do more CrossFit stuff after Rocket City. I don't think I want to start any actual training plan from a book until after the 50K(s).

Taper means to ease back not totally stop!!! :p I really hope your leg is feeling better soon. Saturday's coming quick. Are you driving up there that morning or going the night before? It's only about an hour or so to drive, right?

Yeah, I know, I'm not having a taper, I'm having a termination!!

I'm driving up that morning - one hour drive. I have been sleeping like a rock lately. It would be nice if that would happen Friday night, too. But if it does, it will be the first time for a night before a marathon!!

Hey Dave,

Have a great race Saturday as well! Do you know what the temp is going to be like for your race. It's going to be quite chilly for my race, I'm afraid. I am driving down the night before to stay at my mom's, then heading to the race Saturday a.m. She lives about an hour away, so it shouldn't be that bad. Not looking forward to standing around the in cold though!

Thanks, John!

Brett, yes it's supposed to be 18 for the low that morning in Huntsville according to the latest forecast. WTF?!?! Fortunately, winds are apparently supposed to be calm (at least at dawn), and it's supposed to warm up really quickly into the 50's. That certainly makes for some clothing dilemmas.

Last year it was around 20 at race start, so not much difference. Luckily, we get to mill around in a hotel lobby until right before the race starts. Last year I was absolutely freezing the entire time, but I wore shorts and made the mistake of ditching my sweatshirt too early. Plus it only warmed into the 30's, and I think it was pretty windy.

How much do you think being freezing negatively affected you? Wouldn't that be better than too warm? I'm pretty sure that was my main issue last month- overdressing.

Good luck, Dave. It sounds like you'll be getting a little glimpse at what us midwesterners are going through weather-wise this weekend.

Not as much as being too hot would have affected me, that's for sure!! I'm probably going with shorts plus a long-sleeved dry fabric shirt plus a cheap sweatshirt on top to donate to charity. And gloves! And a cap!

Thanks, Jamie!! We appreciate the early Christmas present from the Midwest. The wind chill is supposed to be ZERO here in the morning. I'm going to try to run a few miles just to get acclimated. I haven't had a run yet below about 35, so I don't want Saturday morning to be too rude of an awakening. Plus wind chills won't be like that on Sat morning with little to no wind (), so it should feel balmy by comparison!

THURS. 12.7.06
AM RUN

DISTANCE: 4.1 miles
TIME: 30:26
AVE. PACE: 7:25/mile

-- First run in one week! I just wanted to do a few easy miles. I did some short stretches faster in the final mile. My leg is still bothering me, but it's not as bad as last week. I really think it's a nerve, because I can't pinpoint any muscle tenderness. Hopefully it will hold out on Saturday. It didn't feel that bad when I was running, just a little annoying at times.

I guess I need to start carbing up. With only 4.1 miles of running so far this week, and only maybe 3 in the morning... I imagine my muscles are pretty well fueled already. Nevertheless, that's no reason to skip the massive pre-marathon desert on Friday!

Thanks, Jeff!

I got my seeding and number for Rocket City. I'm seeded #51 of the 1066 entrants. Seeding is based on best recent marathon time, which in my case was Rocket City 2005. Last year I finished 49th overall, so the field must be pretty similar as far as competitiveness. Two Kenyans are the top seeds.

My leg hurts and I am NOT happy!!! It's mostly focused around the lower part of my left knee on the oustide. It hurts for awhile whenever I start walking. Fortunately the pain diminishes a lot after I walk around, but running on it today clearly pushed me back to where I was about last Friday or Saturday. I guess I'll skip the short run I planned for tomorrow out in the Arctic air and hope that once I get started running on Saturday it won't bother me too much.

Dude, that sucks!! Does ibuprofen help? Probably not- it's not muscle.

How does it feel while running? I couldn't tell by your description of your 4 miler if it hurt during or after.

I definitely would stay off it tomorrow. And just in case I don't get a chance later, good luck Saturday. I'll be looking for a report that afternoon! Well, I will be checking the results!
