I'm considering trying swimming but I would have to change gyms and I HATE to leave JP's. But I may have to. Idon't think he'll be putting a pool in on the 29th floor anytime soon.:p
I'm sure you could talk him into the pool. Just kick out the tenants above or below, simple as that!

As for low impact, what about using an eliptical or stationary biking? They are not the most exciting things but are low-impact activities.

Good luck with the healing, bro. Hope the back is recovered soon. Back pain is such a b*tch. Are you doing lots of MM stuff? I found that since focussing on my hips/glutes with mobility work, my hip and back pain have disappeared.

Nice work cleaning up the diet too. Any thought of substituting green tea for all the coffee? LOL Didn't think so.

just so you know, I was serious about the walking. it's low impact and you move...outside. I'd rather get kicked in the nuts than do something on a cardio machine. With a kick I'm up and about in 5min or so, you're trapped on a machine for god knows how long. Plus you can get a nice workout.

The difference between walking and running? Bad knees.

Thanks Rob. Yep I intend on getting MM when tax money comes back. The green tea thing..yeah...I actually do use green tea. Seems like I'll do coffee for a few months..then I'll go on a green tea kick for a few..back and forth. Long as it has caffiene in it I can survive.:p

I believe you are right on the mark on the hips/glutes mobility work. I know that is what I need to do as well. Thanks for dropping in bro.

I'm with you on the cardio machines. Even with headphones I want to slit my throat. But I do take long walks sometimes on Sundays..so I'll keep that up.

I'm gonna have to see him today. I went by another fitness center this morning and did laps in the olympic pool. No pain! Great workout. NOW..unless I become allergic to chlorine or get a bad case of swimmers ear...I'm gonna start going there in the mornings and do laps. Loved it.

My swimming form probably looks like I'm drowning:p but my lats were pumped when I finally climbed out. Good cardio workout too.

Appreciate ya. I'm feeling encouraged. You guys are the greatest. I love this forum.

What a difference it makes to be ABLE to DO something! I swam laps again this morning. No pain..I feel great!

I guess I need to start at least logging the laps or something so I can track my progress.

My diet is on track though I did relax Saturday. Had some drinks Saturday night and ate additional carbs. But back on track today. I didn't go crazy or anything. I guess the proof will be in the pudding when I weigh in tomorrow afternoon.

I went ahead and joined the new gym with the pool. I hope JP wont be too upset with me. He and the center he runs is top notch.

Thanks. Now, I figure I need to incorporate some leg work in somehow. Swimming don't do much there.

I also need to learn the art of the kick flip. I suck at it.

Jim, glad to hear that you found a workout that feels good ... for legs, you can do stuff in the pool ... they must have kickboards ... do laps of just kicking ... with flutter kick you can change where you "feel" it by changing the emphasis. In other words, create the movement with your glutes or your quads, or your hams ... try it and you'll see what I mean. Just be sure to keep your lumbar spine neutral and your abs in tight ... you can also do squats and lunges in the water with much less impact on your spine ... the deeper the water, the less impact ... you can do step ups on the stairs ... all sorts of things!!!

It's been 8 days since my first weigh in. I was at 172.

You're still over 10 pounds lighter than me, twin-boy. Don't sweat it.

(And I'm not sure, but I'm almost certain "swared" is not actually a word .... well, not in the English language in any event ... )

1 lbs is absolutely perfect man. That's what you're supposed to lose. That means you're doing things right! Don't beat yourself up.

Default Another really really boring post.

Bunch of sickly family at home so I had to skip swimming yesterday giving me a 3 day rest this weekend..wow..I think I must have needed it.

I friggin swam like a fish. Doing multiple laps..like 4-5 down and backs before stopping for breathers...I did a mile and had a lot left in the tank on my last lap..I sprinted back.

I haven't religiously counted laps or timed myself because I'm just learning technique...but I'm beginning to get in a groove here.

I may just have to start timing and counting..maybe my log will become more interesting after that.

Swam a mile this morning. I did stop every few laps and rest a minute or so. (is that vague enough or what?) I have no idea about "swim speed". I wonder what is considered a "fast" time for a mile? Hmmm. Google.

Back is great Rob. Thanks for asking. Well...let me qualify that. My back is great...and I haven't lifted ANYTHING since I hurt it. REally enjoying swimming now.

Seems I hop from one activity to the next. Running..hurt my knees...So..back to lifting...hurt my back...ummm..swimming! Now if I can avoid smashing into the side of the pool.:p

That's great.

It's not the side I'd worry about, J. It's the end - don't want to bump yer noggin! :p Good work on the swimming ... I'd drown!

Gettin a great ab workout at the ends trying to do those kick flips. Takes some coordination to get that right. I get it right...40% of the time. Not quite ready for the olympics.

Saturday morning I decided to try running again. I do love it and miss it.

Seems like maybe the swimming has loosened my hips/legs etc up a bit. I completed 3 miles with no prob. (treadmill - gag) I was careful and started very slow ended out doing 9 minute mile on the last so not bad. 31 minutes in all. No record breaker but didn't hurt my knees. woohoo.

I did a half mile swim after that. New respect for triathaloners on here. sheesh. I was wooped. Heading back to the gymn this afternoon to do some lifting and swimming. Thought I'd try some EDT.

Good to hear the back's holding out, Jemmie. So when are you running your first triathlon? :P

Thnks. Yeah, so far, so good on the back. But I haven't deadlifted a kitty cat and don't plan to for a while longer.

But you know, if I work like this for a year or so, it might not be out of the question to actually consider a tri sport. But I would have to be mucho tougher than I am now. That running-swimming kilt me. I haven't even added the bike. sheesh

Rob, where is your log at these days? I saw where you were doing a combo with someone..but I could find it..

Yesterday - I lifted yesterday for the first time in a while. Only did inclined DB bench and BO DB rows. However, I did them EDT style. I lasted 10 minutes doing 30 second rests..Sheeite. I'm sore today. I tried swimming a bit after the weights and only managed a few laps. I couldn't lift my friggin arms too well. The whirlpool felt nice though.

Gonna do some running and whirlpool today.

Thursday - January 25, 2007

Completed 3 mile run on the dullmill and swam.

Didn't time the swim...didn't count laps...nuttin. It was just a good relaxing swim.

Did work up a red face swimming though so I was putting in some real effort.

Next swim..I'll be working on my flip technique. I talked to a guy at the pool who used to teach swimming and he gave me some pointers.

Today is weigh in day but I'm gonna be switching scales so this will be like the first weigh in all over again. Oh well..

Ran 6.2 miles just to see if I could. First 4 miles were fine. My left knee started acting up during the last 2 miles. I was in a lot of pain but finished the last 2 miles.

I wont be doing anything over 3 miles again for a lonnng time. Just seems I have an "issue" with my knee. The run sucked. I ended up doing like..1hr9min. Rediculously slow. Oh well. At least I know that I am still well conditioned. Wasn't for my knee, I could have run on for a long time.

Performed EDT workout (only one 7 minute session)

incline bench DB - 40#
Bent over rows with same DB's

I dunno how many reps I ended up doing but I did pretty well. I never did less than the 5 reps on anything for the full 7 minutes. However, I did end up doing 2 (30 sec) rests between supersets near the end.

It was brutal.

Then I swam 10 minutes and hit the whirlpool for 10.

Those edt sessions are over so fast, you think that you haven't really done enough. But the body feels it. My chest is still tight.
