Puncture wounds are not fun, but like you said, you are lucky that it hit where it did.
Glad to hear that your books finally arrived. You should both learn a lot, and you have lots of great workouts to look forward to.

Off day. Ran 20 minutes on the treadmill. It was harder than usual. I REALLY heated up. I think it was the Huge-mungus Chinese food meal I had just before.
Still sweating now 30 minutes after the shower..
Yes Jimbo..Chinese food is bad bad bad especially in mass quantities.. Uh..duh.

WOOOOOHOOO! Started NROL today! Kicked my arse litterally. (My bum is already sore)
Monday, April 21, 2008
NROL BREAK-IN WORKOUT A
Back Squats - 2x15x115
SS
Static Lunge - 2x15xbw
2 pt. DB Row Elbow out - 2x15x40
SS
Push ups (feet elevated on bench) - 2x15
Swiss Ball Crunch - 2x20
This doesn't look like much on paper..but this kicked major butt. I am not used to doing high rep work. I usually go for 3-5 reps all the time so this was quite different for me. My arse is already feeling a bit tense. Hahahha That was funny. Yes..I am back in the 3rd grade so shoot me.
The GREAT news is that I was able to perform back squats for the first time in I can't remember when. It would seem that the face pulls and bent over lat raises..etc..shoulder work..has done the trick!!!
Prior to today..I couldn't reach the bar on my back with my left hand!
I kept a good rythm going all the way through the first set of 15 but had a few hesitations in the second set. My legs FELT it! 15s are a beeoch!
I hate it in a good way. This is going to be fun!
My girl did her first workout today too and she really was challenged by it. We are both excited about NROL. I recommend it..

Oh yeah..legs.. JELLO comes to mind. Coupling the high rep squats with lunges (which I have never done much of really) I had some immediate soreness leaving the gym. So I knew I was in for some bad soreness the next day. I really think running the next day actually helped with it a bit though.
It is indeed good to be doing a real program. It's been a WHILE since I have done anything professionally designed. I like it. Maybe I'll make some progress here and there.

I'm glad to see that your books finally arrived. The high rep work in NROL can really be a killer, especially on things like lunges and step-ups. Just wait until you have to superset split squats and step ups after doing full squats.
Good news about the squats and your shoulder. Just make sure you continue to make time for that extra shoulder work when you get into a new routine.
Which workout are you planning on doing after the break-in? I highly recommend Hypertrophy I. It's sort of a blend between the fat loss and strength routines because it really mixes up the set/rep scheme. One day you are doing 3x15, the next 5x5.

Now that's just sadistic!

NROL BREAK-IN WORKOUT A - Week1
Back Squats - 2x15x120
SS
Static Lunge - 2x15x10db's
2 pt. DB Row Elbow out - 2x15x40
SS
Push ups (feet elevated on bench & hands on balance board) - 2x10 (couldn't get 15's!)
Swiss Ball Crunch - 2x20
Notes:
I had a trainer approach me about the 2pt. DB - elbow out - rows..These are shown done standing so this is how I was (trying) doing them. He was concerned I was going to end up twisting at some point and injuring my back. He recommended using a bench, of course, to take away the danger..but I wondered if anyone else who has done this break in program ever did this? Wonder what the point of standing is..or if there is one? The elbow out thing is definitely more challenging for me than standard rows.
PS - I added the balance board to the pushups to make them more challenging. I guess I will drop the elevated feet next week cause I didn't make the 15 reps. It definitely made it more challenging.

Okay..Now I'm perplexed as to what I should do..
I researched the 2pt DB row in the NROL subforum and found this discussion of the matter: Two-point DB Row Question
It seems that most there were in agreement that this should be done without bench support. The thing is..this trainer at JP's was nice enough to offer his assistance and concern..shit..now I wish he hadn't. He's gonna think I'm an A hole or an idiot for not using a bench..oh well. I guess I'll just try and explain. I really want to use the program as written.

NROL Break-in - Workout B - Week 2
Dead Lift
2x15x140(+5)
SS
Step Ups - 2x15x12(+2)
1 Arm Overhead Press - 1x15x25, 1x15x30(+5)
SS
Lat Pulldown Close grip - 2x15x95 (+15)
Rev.Crunch on Slant- 2x20xbw (slant setting 6) +5 on slant
Notes: I really felt a lot more in my upper/mid back this time. I have had real trouble making the mind muscle connection where my back is concerned. Lat pulldowns have just never really done it..nothing has. Frankly I just don't have a very muscular back. So it was nice feeling the muscles actually working this time!
Getting better at the step ups too as far as form.
The one arm o.h. press was really difficult after adding the 5 additional pounds. It may be a few sessions before I up that weight again.
