My primarylifts have always been bench press, squat, military press, and bent-over rows. I have recently been told that deadlifts are a better overall back exercise and that they should become my primary lift for back.
Share your thoughts on this with me please.

I've always thought of Deads as more of a lower back excercise as far as back is concerned.
I am sure it could hit the upper back, but I doubt it can hit it the same was as bent over rows can.
I would definetely add Deads into your primary lifts, but I wouldn't personally drop bent over rows because of them.

Deadlifts also hit your hamstrings/glutes.

Deadlifts hit your whole back very hard. I can only handle them in my routine a few times per month but I also rotate bent-over rows in as well as seated rows with various width grips, and dumbbell rows.

Hopper...
start thinking in terms of movements instead of body parts:
1. vertical push
2. horizontal push
3. vertical pull
4. horizontal pull
5. hip dominant (deadlifts, for ex)
6. quad dominant

Why can you only handle them in your routine a few times a month? They are a very important excercise and most others should be built around it.

Deadlifts are an awesome compound exercise that target many muscles. It directly targets the erector spinae, which runs along both sides of the spinal column from the sacrum, ilium and lumbar vertebrae all the way up to the cervical vertebrae. It's assisted by the glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves and is stabilized by the traps, scapulae and rhomboids. I think they are important to add to your training routine. I think you'll see good results by adding them in...especially if you've been doing bent-over rows for a while...time to switch things up
I know that the best pullers in the world sometimes only pull once every month or 2 and sometimes even less frequently than that. If you are pulling a great amount of weight, it does get very taxing on the body.

Some Westside lifters will only do it once every two months, spending the rest of the time working on assisting muscles by doing good mornings, stiff-leg deads, sleg drags and the like...

getting back to the original point. a primary exercise i'm assuming for the lats is the bent over row. no one is arguing the deadlift is not essential etc., but it's not a primary exercise for the lats per se.

how about this. do a deadlift then bend your elbows and do a bent over row in one movement. there, a compound compound lift.
